In last year of first contract, Rams' backup quarterback Sean Mannion again figures to get limited playing time

During an NFL career that is moving into its fourth season, Rams quarterback Sean Mannion has received limited opportunities to produce on-the-field highlights.

He backed up Nick Foles and Case Keenum as a rookie in St. Louis in 2015. He sat behind Keenum and No. 1 draft pick Jared Goff when the Rams returned to Los Angeles a year later.

Last season, he was No. 2 behind Goff, a role he is on track to reprise in the final year of his contract.

Mannion, though, recently celebrated a personal highlight. After being excused from training camp for a few days, he was with his wife as she delivered a baby girl.

“There’s nothing like it,” he said of becoming a parent. “Getting to hold your daughter for the first time is just the most amazing thing.”

Mannion, 26, is preparing for what is expected to be another busy preseason.

Goff, coming off a stellar second season, is on track to start Thursday’s preseason opener at Baltimore, but his snaps will be meticulously monitored and limited. They might increase in games against Oakland and Houston, but he and other starters almost certainly will sit out the final preseason game at New Orleans.

That means Mannion once again will have the chance to show coach Sean McVay — and 31 other NFL teams — that he is a viable option.

Mannion, a third-round draft pick in 2015, has a salary-cap number of just over $1 million, according to overthecap.com.

Uncertainty about his future does not create added pressure, he said. Just as rookies use the preseason to impress coaches and build a resume with their play, so do veterans chasing a second contract.

“First year or last year,” he said, “you have to play well to stay around.”

Mannion, 6 feet, 6 inches and 223 pounds, has played in seven regular-season games. He has completed 31 of 50 passes for 235 yards, with one interception.

During preseason games last season, he completed 49 of 76 passes for 490 yards and two touchdowns.

As Goff and other starters sat out the regular-season finale to avoid injury before the playoffs, Mannion started against the San Francisco 49ers. He completed 20 of 34 passes for 169 yards in a 34-13 defeat at the Coliseum.

Goff has noted during training camp that there is comfort in playing in McVay's offense for a second year. Mannion agreed, emphasizing that there are no “mental gymnastics” to navigate, and that he can play and react to situations as they arise.

“You just feel like you’re hitting the ground running,” he said. “Knowing that you know every aspect of [the offense], it just lets you play with so much confidence.”

Third-year pro Brandon Allen and rookie free agent Luis Perez are other quarterbacks in camp.

I hope Allen and or Peres beat Mannion in the QB competition. I keep thinking that McVay may have seen something in Allen that he likes. That is why they brought him in. Perez has a long way to go, but it sounds like he has some raw potential.

In the end, I guess Sean Mannion has the experience advantage, so maybe he is safe. If not some other team will pick him up. There aren't thirty two teams with better back up options. Besides, a guy like Pete Carroll would want him just to get info.

From what I've seen in TC, Mannion is clearly #2. He just knows the offense way better than Allen or Perez. Mannion has his moments, he can make all the passes, he is just slower than Goff.

I'm lukewarm on Perez, not drafted and played at a small school and much smaller than Northern Iowa too, so besides him making a great confidant in Mexico, I don't hold out too much hope. Allen is different as I'm interested to see him play in preseason, but in the end, I still believe Mannion will backup Goff with Perez possibly on the practice squad.

Next year, Rams will either sign a veteran or draft a QB to be the backup if Allen does not unseat Mannion. I've posted before I still believe that Mannion has the talent to play at the NFL level as he is superior to many backups in the NFL because that is a position I feel is very weak throughout the league.

Great point @bubbaramfan again I don't understand some of the disdain for Mannion. Goff is our guy and Mannion has served him well so I look forward to another great year for Goff with Mannion in the distance.

When Mannion's contract is up, another NFL team is going to give him a chance to start.

Rams dropped a lot of Mannions passes in that game against the Whiners. He seemed to settle down after a rocky start. The Whiners were bumped up and did get some pressure early. Him knowing the system is a big plus. I think he stays at the backup. Watching him and Allen in preseason can give us a better idea where they stand. I don't Mannion's open market value is but, I don't think Rams can afford to keep him.

That would be a bit surprising.

One positive about Mannion is a friendly cap number when you consider NFL backups have been commanding 2.5m or more for a few years now.

Because some expect the the number two QB to play like the number one QB, failing to see that if played like a number one QB, he would be a number one QB. Because there are a FEW examples of this in the league, they think the Rams should have that also, not realizing that most teams number two QB's actually play like a number two, i.e. Mannion.

And sometimes you never know because until last year, most including yours truly felt Nick Foles was not a quality backup QB, now he seems to be one of the best in the NFL. I have wondered why NFL teams just don't draft QB's and try to develop them as the back up. The Patriots have done this with Matt Cassel, Jimmy Garoppolo and others and have received draft choices for them.

We truly don't know about Mannion because he's never had the opportunity to play with the first team and take first team reps and I don't want to see that because I want Goff to be doing that for the next 18 years, but I expect next season for the Rams to draft a QB and for him to be the backup IMHO.

Or a chance for a better opportunity like Raymond Anthony "AJ" McCarron Jr in Buffalo.

McCarron got a shot due to his play that season spelling Dalton. He held it together very well, to include a solid playoff outing.

Mannion, barring some actual playing time in which he gets out there with starters (which I hope doesn't happen for obvious reasons), is going to need to sign a backup contract and wait for his shot.

Good point on McCarron, I was just illustrating a better opportunity. like Cincinnati for example next season or even maybe Los Angeles Chargers as there is not much behind Old Man River.

I am uncomfortable with Mannion in there, and it seems like we are in for a sure loss if he’s paying for Goff to me. I know he played with other back ups in the Niner game last year, but I felt hopeless with him, watching him act like a slow moving statue. Even if you don’t include Keenum or Foles, I’d feel more confident with a journeyman back up whose only job is to hand off to Gurley

Imagine this scenario;
Sean Mannion playing behind our Pro Bowl laden starting offensive line throwing to our starting wide receivers and being able to hand off to Gurley.
Then give him a couple games starting to settle down.

I bet he would look a lot better than he did in that San Francisco game.
Just a guess. :D

Never understood the disdain for Mannion.

Actually I do. With the controversy of him being higher than Goff on the depth chart at one point some feel like they had to rag on him to justify Goff and Goff not being a bust.

Mannion is a pretty good #2 and would be confident with him playing with the #1’s if It came down to it. Obviously, i hope that never happens.

I don't see it. I think he can stick around as a backup as he seems to be a good locker-room guy, but I have never seen starting QB ability in his game. Personally, I'd prefer that we replaced him than re-signed him. I want someone with a bit more potential. JMO.

And he is VERY familiar with Cooks and has been in the system.

I don’t want him to start any games as I think Goff is clearly the best option for now and into the future, but I still think we could do a lot worse.

He's too damn tall... making him slow and plodding. I don't like QBs over 6'5"... they are usually kinda clumsy and not athletic enough.

My $00.02

It’s funny because though he’s obviously taller, he doesn’t look much taller than Goff when I see them practicing next to each other.

I agree that he obviously doesn’t have the movements of Goff. Still I think there are a shit ton of shorter QBs that wouldn’t offer what Mannion does.

Either way, I think he either shows something or we are moving on next season. I don’t think either of the other two will supplant him this season.
