Sam Bradford willing to bet on himself, ride out current contract

The Eagles took a chance, trading for a quarterback coming off a pair of torn ACLs who might otherwise not have been available.

He’s taking a chance as well.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Bradford isn’t interested in a contract extension now, willing to play out his contract in hopes of a big year for the Eagles.

That would result in a big contract in 2016, but it comes with a sizable risk as well. If Bradford fails to either stay healthy and/or shine in Chip Kelly’s system, the market for him in free agency next spring won’t be nearly so robust.

Of course, there’s another factor at play here. We’re not sure whether or what kind of extension the Eagles may have offered. If they didn’t promise anything for the years beyond 2015 when trading for him, it makes Bradford’s gesture less noble and daring, refusing to accept that which was not offered.

When he’s well, he’s been good enough he should thrive in Kelly’s system. But he’s rarely been well, playing in 49 of 80 games since entering the league as the top pick in the 2010 draft, getting the last of the golden goose contracts before the rookie scale was implemented.

That may be what makes him willing to bet on himself, since he started with a a bigger stack of chips than the quarterbacks who came after him.
--------
Sam is set for life financially, he just wants to prove what he can do if/when healthy.
---------
Huh? 58% completion percentage. 79.3 QB rating. 38 picks in 49 games. I honestly don’t get where people are creating this illusion that Bradford was this stud in the NFL before he blew out his ACL twice. This guy was AVERAGE AT BEST and THEN he got hurt twice.
--------
He may regret that but he may not have had a choice. I suspect Kelly only traded for him to try to trade him to the Browns for a first round pick so they could make a run at Mariota. So, as the article mentioned, they may have had no intention of giving him a contract extension.

Furthermore, why would anyone give him a big money contract extension to someone who’s always injured. I would be surprised if he plays half the games this year which means he’s going to have a hard time finding a team dumb enough to consider him a starting QB. He’ll have to finish his career as a backup for a lot less money.
--------
What risk is he taking? He’s made a King’s ransom for a very sub-par career thus far. Anything from this point on is pure gravy. Unless he suddenly becomes the next Montana this season, let him walk. Let’s face it, he was brought here as a bargaining chip to get Mariota and it failed. This just in… No one is lining up to give you another $50-60 million Sam…
--------
As the last of the big price draft choices and 13 mil yet to come it’s easy to gamble. If he fails either by production or by injury he’s finished anyway. Nobody will pay. I’m sure he was low balled by the Eagles and should have been they already took the gamble on a 13 mil QB. Both sides will know at sometime during this season and it will all come out in the wash.

Thats actually great for us as Rams fans because if he plays a majority of the snaps we don't owe them any draft picks.

Also we will get to see if a change of scenery has done anything for Bradford. I know i will be watching a few more Eagles games then normal. hahahahha

I wonder if people who say these things subscribe to the following:

Peyton Manning would still put up 4k yards and 40 TDS even if his supporting cast was the West Panama High School Banana Slugs JV team's second string offense.

Or.

Kurt Warner would still have won a Super Bowl with Cadillac Williams, Brandon Gibson, Danny Amendola and Mike Hoomanawanui as his go-to guys.

And STFU with that strawman about people allegedly saying Bradford is a "stud". All anyone who objectively analyzes his game has said is, his developent has been atrocious and his supporting cast is everyone else's second team right now - and in some cases out of football entirely.

Is he great? Probably not, but that's because he's always getting injured and he never really had the opportunity to showcase his talents or have an offense around him that could actually inflate his stats.

We saw him with Clayton, Lloyd and Alexander. He looked like a legit starting QB. And we also saw him with Gibson, Pettis, Gilyard, Salas, Smith, Fells and Onobun. You know, the guys who are currently ripping the league to shreds.

Ah, what's the use?

I disagree with this. Chip Kelly's system relies on a mobile QB to be really affective. In Philly they were calling Nick Foles ole' cement shoes. From what I have seen he runs better than Sam does. Once teams stopped fearing Foles running ability the Eagles offense was average.

I really think that Kelly took a chance and overestimated Bradfords value, thinking he could trade him for enough ammunition to move for Mariota. It was a dumb risk and it is going to blow up in his face.

If I never hear the name Sam Bradford again I won't be disappointed, it was fun watching him stand on the sideline for 2 seasons whilst it lasted, but he's gone now, it's over, he doesn't have to hurt our playoff chances ever again.

I mean, what are the chances he tears the same ACL a second time?

He will be fine!

I think Kelly wanted Bradford as an upgrade to Foles, willing to gamble that he'd be healthy. That doesn't mean that he didn't explore a three way trade involving the Browns to see if he could get Mariotta. Just it turned out that the Browns' pick wasn't going to be enough with the Eagles' pick to move up that far. I do think that the Rams insisted on more in trade for Bradford than Kelly initially expected, and made him blink - that's why the trade went down so fast, without JT being notified. The Rams kept insisting for more than a straight swap - when the Eagles finally gave in at the beginning of the trade period, the Rams accepted immediately. Basically, they took advantage of Kelly NOT being a real GM. Which is fine with me.

I don't care about the QB trade anymore, its done, lets hope both stay healthy and we see see what can get done. All I'm worried about is poor JT, nobody ever considered his feelings in all of this, the poor guy got dumped on from a big height....

Easy thing to do when you've already made a crap ton of money that'll easily last a lifetime and more even with a few splurge buys.

omg, what a way to blow your whole these out of the water. Well, at least they copped to it, rather then leaving it unsaid.

That's the way I see it, the best case scenario to me is he's their starter for the entirety of the season.

He's gone now, so that's all I want him to do ... I just want him to be their best option at quarterback in 2015. After that, I don't care.

Well, I never wish anybody ill luck, but if he's very effective and it wins the Eagle's games, it might hurt the value of their 2nd round pick more than the Rams' pick they would have sent is worth. I do like him though - IF the Eagles' defense is so bad that the team loses even with an effective Bradford, good. But I would like the Eagles' 2nd round pick to be #33 if at all possible.

Bradford isn't interested in a contract extension, as if he's giving the Eagles a break? Hell, If he gets hurt again and never takes another snap he's already been paid millions of $$ he earned while holding a clipboard. He hasn't proved he earned the money he got from his first contract.

To be honest though, we can't count on Sam bringing them down, because if he's not their best option, they'll play Sanchez, and I just don't hate on him like some ... I think he's a perfectly viable option and would have prefered Mark as our backup quarterback to what we've had in our last three seasons.

Honestly, if I was Chip, I wouldn't have made the Bradford trade, but rather used the money elsewhere for the team, but I am glad he made the trade!

To Bradford's credit with all the media and fan blasting he's never said anything negative about the players around him or the media who attacks him.
I am and will always be a fan of the kid. He was put into a crappy situation that nobody could of lit the world up with.
I hope he does really well. Not only for him but so we protect our draft pick.

Living amongst Philly fans, I have to say that this is the impression that I get too. Most of my Eagle buds were all silently waiting for "the big trade" where they moved up for Mariota. Not sure if it was thinking that Bradford would bring back more value, or if Mariota was going to be available later than pick #2 or combination of the 2.

He's Philly's issue now and I dont know how Id feel if I was a fan of theirs. Is it a good thing or bad that he wont re-sign?
