Running the ball out of the Shotgun...

What I don't get is...why did it take so long? I didn't have a lot of faith in Goff after the last couple of seasons...but how hard is it to hand off from the shotgun that Goff never did it? It just seems crazy that we never slipped in a run from the shotgun in forever. I just don't understand why.

It could be that its an option for the QB to hand off like an RPO and he didn't trust Goff to read and react fast enough. That would be my only guess as to why we never utilized it before.

I think you have a point about the RPO... If Stafford can make those reads on his own, and not be so reliant on getting that info in his headset... being back in the shotgun allows him to use that skill more...

Adding to the playbook is great but I think it's a little from column A and a little from column B and @jrry32 makes a good point that Stafford is much more comfortable in the gun and not having his back to D.

Also... not having a million WR screens a game was a nice change of pace.

Goff wasn’t that good throwing from the gun, they didn’t do that often either, did McVay have to manufacture throwing lanes? I’m interested to see what Detroit’s offense looks like, there’s a lot McVay wouldn’t ask him to do: throw deep, throw from the gun, hand off from the gun, audible. If Goff plays decent will anyone question McVay’s use of him?
