Rams legend Eddie Meador dies at age 86

Former Los Angeles Rams legend Eddie Meador passed away at the age of 86 on Monday, the team confirmed in a statement Tuesday. Meador spent all 12 years of his NFL career with the Rams, earning six Pro Bowl selections, one first-team All-Pro nod and a spot on the Hall of Fame’s All-1960s team.

Though he wasn’t inducted into the Hall of Fame, he was a semifinalist in the senior category in each of the last two years. He has a deserving resume, picking off 46 passes in his career.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of an NFL great, Eddie Meador, who was a standout leader for our organization and the Los Angeles community throughout his entire 12-year career,” the team said in a statement. “He was an instinctive and fearless competitor who captained some of the greatest defenses in NFL history. Eddie’s ability to galvanize teammates made him a heartbeat of the Rams and his humility made him approachable to everyone. The Meador family and friends are at the core of our thoughts, and his legacy will live on forever.”

Meador originally joined the Rams in 1959 as a seventh-round pick, going on to have a fantastic career in Los Angeles from 1959-1970 where he played 163 games and made 160 starts.

Aw, crud. That sucks. Eddie was a great safety, wish he would've been alive for his future HOF induction. He was smart, tough, had a nose for the ball, and a nice pair of hands. RIP Eddie.

My condolences to his family and friends.

He was a truly exceptional player and there are many far less deserving ones in the HOF.

One of my all time favorite Rams. I know that Merlin and Deacon got most of the pub but I always loved having Eddie Meador on the back end as he was our security blanket when needed.
Prayers for his family; he will be missed.

Rest in peace. He should've been elected to the Hall before he passed.

Only caught him in his final two years, and I was too young to fully appreciate a quality safety.

Stats reflect his involvement in 75 take-aways in an eleven-year-career; and just one missed game.

Six-time Pro Bowler ... Four-time All Pro. Clearly, one of the premier safeties of the 1960s decade.

Did a quick stat-comparison (stats don't tell a full story and different periods) with Nolan Cromwell who was one of the most accomplished Rams' safeties in my 50-years of being a fan. Also had an eleven-year-career, and played in almost the same number of games. 4 Pro Bowls, 3X All Pro. Contributed to 58 take-aways.

Dang, he was 86? I remember him as a kid. You just don't think those guys are that age. RIP Ed Meador. You were part of the team when I first fell in love with the horns.

Eddie was an acquaintance of my Dad’s, having been at Arkansas Tech at the same time.

After I was born, we moved to Whittier. My folks socialized with the
Meadors.

He was the holder on place kicks. I believe that he had running and passing TD’s on fakes, he was so versatile.

He sent me an autographed ball, entire team, when I was ten. The 1970 team.

I’m saddened. I reached out to the family back in the ST. Louis days and received a nice email in return. Wrote in support of his HOF effort.

He’s deserving….and had an obvious impact on me and my love for the Rams.

Go Eddie!

As much as I like to think I’m a Rams fan I find there is some player from history I know nothing about that I hear of that pops up. Enjoying reading all the dialogue and wish I knew more about him before he passed.

RIP Eddie!

The RAMS family has lost a couple of great defensive players the last couple weeks with Maxie Baughn having passed recently. Both of these outstanding individuals belong in Canton.
RIP Eddie. Loved watching you play during my formative years as an LA RAM fan.
Prayers go out to all who mourn him.
