This is what people don’t understand. The Rams have seen Gurley banged up by seasons end up and took a long look at how they want to extend his career. No reason to run him into the ground by the time he’s 28. He’s still on pace for a little over 200 carries.Personally I would rather see Gurley transition to the role of pass catching 3rd down back out of the backfield.
Can still make a big impact there while limiting the pounding. Its a natural progression if he is to have a long career.
I can guarantee that guys like Kamara & McCaffery will follow that path. Right now they do it all just as Gurley was in his first 4 years, but that can't last.
And those type guys can still make big impacts in their later 20's even if they only get 12-15 touches a game.
RBs rarely play their long contract out and I believe the Rams looked at the situation and realized they would rather have a very good Gurley for 5 more years rather then an elite Gurley for two.
