That will depend on how these play-off games go. I would be surprised if our top 2 TEs next year are not Higbee and Everett.
Higbee is like Jareds best buddy and Everett is the 1st pick of the McVay regime. Both are continually getting better. Hard to imagine either leaving for a cheap pick.

I would agree but this particular TE crop in free agency is rather hideous. Also it seems like TE is coveted on the market, every time a halfway decent option is out there the WCO offensive type teams go nuts for them.

Sorta makes sense too since these guys take goddamn forever to develop compared to other positions like RB. Either way I don't think McVay is high on Higs and he never has been. Higs is a good blocker but in spite of his size and speed lacks the hands and instincts in the passing game.

They may go after a blocker type, hell I'd even like to see them draft a mid to late OT who has good athleticism and convert him to a "blocking only" TE. Could definitely see them drafting one too, at any point where one they like is there, since Higs is a FA after the 2019 season.

I think people are looking at what Higbee is today, thus making the trade look bad.
This time last year, Higbee didn’t have many supporters. He wasn’t good in 2017.
6th rounder was probably fair comp THEN.
Now? No way. Probably 3rd or 4th rounder

If the time of the trade talk was before last season (and maybe shortly after the 2017 draft), it makes sense.

Let's credit Higbeast for the work he's put in to his craft. He was a converted WR in college, that played in WKU's uber-pass happy offense that the Rams drafted to be an offensive weapon. Under Fisher, he fizzled - no surprise. I mean, it would have been pretty easy back after Fish was dusted to mentally lump Higs in with Kenny Britt and Brian Quick.

Then under McV, Hig's turned into an indispensable physical pass blocking TE. There was also a video this year showing his ability to, pick/screen down field, as an eligible receiver, without getting flagged. On top of everything, he is sort of useful as a pass catcher.

So yeah, looking at him today and looking at the proposed trade way back then doesn't look right. I give Higs credit for what he's become.

Realistically, Higbee is probably worth a 5th or 6th if we wanted to trade him now. But this is one of those situations where Higbee is more valuable to us than other teams. Might as well keep him.

The only way I would agree to trade Higbee for a 7th round pick is if they agreed to take Peters, also.

You are right and I dont think upgrading anything should be out of the question... but our offense didn't ask them to do much other than block, which they did well. We had 3 1200 yard receivers most of the year + Todd Gurley. When considering where the rest of those balls were going, it makes sense and doesn't seem that strange. They have taken the time to develop them and both have shown they belong imo. It would be foolish to me if they bailed on either 1 this offseason unless there was a serious character issue, which doesn't seem like the case.

TEs are one of the slowest positions to develop. I think if McVay or Goff trusted them more than Woods, Cooks, Kupp or Gurley, they would have much better numbers but I don't think anyone would blame them for not being as polished and dependable as those vets. (And Kupp, the most polished rookie evarr)

Pisses me off that we would have let him go for a sixth rounder.

Why do teams discard
Players so easily, and for so little?

Higbee has been very good, and has gotten better as the season progresses. His blocking has been very solid.

Edit:

:burp:“I’ve got a great idea! Let’s strengthen a conference rival by dumping Higbee! We could get maybe a low sixth rounder....I mean what a great move! There would be no stopping us!”
Yeah - not buying it. We would have still needed a TE that could play and be able to block.

But with a 6th rounder? I’m not buying that this was their angle.

Everett has proven he has the hands to be an offensive weapon, Higbee is getting better. A lot better. And we still dont see much of them. I dont think its lack of their talent being the reason, its just purely play design. Could be wrong though.

As much as Snead seems to love collecting 6th rounders, he sure hasn’t had much success with them.

IMO, Snead’s best stuff has been in round 3 and also with UDFA’s.

Well, if it is true, some of the best trades you make are the ones you don't! One reason I think it could be true, this regime sure loves 6th round picks.

Derrick Carrier.

Well he basically did the same thing as Higbee, so right after last season I could see The Rams making a trade for a 6th rd pick.

Higbee moving forward is a solid TE along with Everett & can’t see The Rams trading either one at this point. Both still have upside as well.

It's not "writing him off" to acknowledge what Higbee is: a primary blocking TE. McVay is one of the most knowledgeable TE coaches in the league, so it's also not a stretch to think he wants more from the position in having a guy who can be a bit more dependable in the passing game, who can be more of a seam threat, not to mention give us a redzone boost.

There's no writing off here IMO. It's just recognition that our TE group as a whole has some room for improvement. But as I mentioned above, I don't think there's a FA option that will give us that improvement next season. Which means they might draft a guy they like and he'll be getting coached up next season while Higs does his thing in his last season with us. Higs has 3 full seasons now as a TE, so he's pretty much going to be what we see now I think.
