Thought I heard the names Manziel and Kaepernick so I thought I'd swing by and see what was happening in this thread.

Btw while I'm all for a good redemption story, I do remember being told by my AA sponsor not to make any major decisions until I had one year of sobriety. Someone should be telling Johnny that as well.
This is complete utter...... ok i just wanted to leave this here

Not sure I follow. Johnny’s profession (regardless of how unsuccessful it’s been) has been that of a “pro football qb”
Many people come in to AA unemployed, and seek work in their former profession. I don’t think Johnny should be any different. Wouldn’t think a sponsor would advise him not “working” for a whole year. Idle time being devils playground and all....

It's funny you mention being unemployed. My particular sponsor would help no one unless they had a job. The vast number of member of AA members I knew in my 13 years there were gainfully employed.

My point about Manziel is that his #1 priority should be maintaining his sobriety until he was strong enough to deal with his job as an NFL QB along with the temptations that go with that gig. It's about priorities.

Maybe the Seasquawk will get him to backup Wilson. The Rams don't need his sorry ass.

Agree to disagree. The job of being an nfl qb isn’t going to threaten his sobriety. It’s his profession and what he should be doing. Training mentally and physically and working his steps. Him taking a job in some random profession would be more of a “no major changes” bit.
He doesn’t have any more temptations at his job than any other recovering addict has in theirs.
Hope he truly is on the path to recovery regardless of if he ever plays football again or not.

Agree to disagree. Money and fame brings much temptation. The amount of those who have fallen from this are legion.

When I first tried to kick drugs and alcohol through AA in 1979, I didn't listen to the advice given, and went back to playing in clubs and bars. Sobriety didn't last long for me. Hopefully Johnny Football is a better man than I was but the offseason is long.

The kid already has money and fame. His parents are loaded, and he's famous whether or not he plays in the NFL.

I’m not sure what playing in clubs and bars has to do with Manziel? We are taking about playing football. Clubs and bars have alcohol readily available, so that could be a temptation , although liquor salesmen, bartenders, waiters etc, get sober all the time. Still and all, what better workplace environment than a professional football player. Dietitians, workout rooms, reliance on being in peak form. It’s not like they have cocktail waitresses handing drinks between reps.
Again, I hope for the best for the kid, and as long as he’s on the right path the environment should be great. If he’s not on the right path it doesn’t matter what environment he’s in, he’ll use again

I don't think I've seen enough of this guy to actually want him to take over Mannion's back up spot. I didn't watch him in college and I didn't watch any Browns games. Sean Mannion was a back up in a new system though, in a game where a lot of the starters didn't play. I am sure that the players on the field wanted to make an impression, and it is their job of course, but don't you think a couple of those guys mail it in? Your in the playoffs for the first time in freaking forever, and coach takes the starters out so they will not get hurt. Doesn't resonate as "Let's go get them, boys" material.

They know what they have in Mannion. Do they know what they are going to get in Manziel?

Also, It's Los Angeles, and we already have signed three players that have spirited (to say the least)
on field character issues. Media circus surrounding camp and into the season would be absolutely nauseating. I hope McVay has the coaching ability to corral the new personalities he has added already. To bring Manziel into the mix is not worth it.

We should bring Troy Williams in as a UDFA .... he had a really solid pro day at Utah.... ran a 4.58.. Good size..big arm.... McVay could really work with him...

I guess you and some others here have more experience with alcoholism than I do. Hope you're right and I'm wrong. I'm done with this circular argument.

If he's serious about making a coke back and is clean, I'd bring him in as a camp arm and see if he can earn it. I can't imagine he would sign for that unless it was his only option.
