Its been so long the Rams have had crappy O lines and finally last season they field a good one, I just hate to break it up.

Losing Saffold doesn't mean we'll have a bad line. We've drafted some the last few years and brought in guys Kromer and McVay like. Trust in the coaches, hell we may get an upgrade on him if we let him walk.

Yeah - the whole injury history thing diesn’t really wash. Been injury free for awhile now. And
Frank Gore has an “injury history”, and I believe he’s still playing.

Two relatively healthy seasons don't wash away a career of injuries, especially considering the shoulder problems he's had.

But neither is better than him. They are younger is all. I think for four years, he's better than either of them

They're younger and will be cheaper to re-sign. Two good reasons to keep them.

Ever since he he had both shoulders fixed, he hasn't had any injury problems. Plus if you watched the Rams last year you seen a guy who was very effective in pass protection, and especially in the run game. He was manhandling people at the point of attack, and then moving on and demolishing defenders at the second level.

He left multiple games with injuries last year, and I'm not going let our two younger guys walk to pay a 31 year old who has struggled to stay healthy. I don't care that he's had two relatively healthy seasons. It's a bad bet.

But they're not as good jrry, and breaking up an effective group that just started jelling is not very wise. Rams should keep this OL intact as long as its effective.

Really @jrry32! Did you read that? It states that Saffold came out of one game due to ribs and ankle problems, but he played in the next game. This happens to almost every lineman during the year. And yes he was on concussion protocol. It didn't say he had a concussion, and he didn't miss any game time due to it. Next time @jrry32 come at me with something that sounds like you understand the game of football and not this grasping at straws to back your unfounded point. Sheesh

I don't care if they're not as good. They're less likely to break down during their contract. Myself and others were talking about what the Patriots have done to keep their success going. One of those things is not giving third contracts to 30+ year old players (outside of Brady). They just let Nate Solder walk this off-season for that exact reason.

The Rams drafted Noteboom, Demby, and Allen. We also have Blythe. Hopefully, somebody in that group proves they're able to step up and take over Saffold's job. With Kromer and McVay coaching, I believe they can. Saffold is a losing bet. And to keep him, we'll have to sacrifice somebody else. I'd rather keep the right side of our OL intact (Brown and Hav) and put a new guy next to Whitworth than let our right side go and keep an aging player.

Hmmm...I wonder if Snead knows that Whit is on his 3rd contract? We're screwed!

We keep Saffold if we can because he's a great asset.

I think though that we can't afford him.

Let's put it this way:
2017 - 16 starts (rested last game; left multiple games with injuries - ribs and ankle)
2016 - 15 starts (left Saints game with a hand injury and missed game against Patriots next week)
2015 - 5 starts (right shoulder injury ended his season)
2014 - 16 starts (left shoulder surgery after the season)
2013 - 12 games/9 starts (sprained MCL)
2012 - 10 starts (sprained MCL and neck and back injuries)
2011 - 9 starts (torn pectoral)
2010 - 16 starts

Durability doesn't improve as a player ages. Saffold will turn 31 before next season. Now, you can convince yourself that his two relatively healthy seasons means something has changed. However, I won't pretend his injury history doesn't exist. And shoulder injuries tend to do in aging OLs. Saffold has a history of shoulder issues. Every contract is a gamble. The smart teams don't gamble on 31 year old injury prone OLs.

I'd love to keep Saffold, but the best I'd offer him is 2 years $12 million. Saffold can do better on the open market. I won't begrudge him for that. I am hoping that with Brown suspended for two games, one of our young OLs will step up and prove they belong. We're going to have to start making hard choices. We can't keep everyone.

When you keep turning over an OL and end up with cheaper 1st, 2nd or 3rd year players, you end up with an OL that constantly gets schooled by vet DLines. Take the Rams O lines before last year. Freaking clueless. Gurley had to fight defensive guys for the handoff. Goff could barely get the ball out of his hands without someone in his face. It takes years to learn all the tricks defenses use.

Things like "continuity" and "jelling" "knowing what the guy next to you can and can't do" are real for OLines to perform well.

Going the cheaper route you end up getting what you pay for.

Our OLs before last year sucked because of coaching. Our OL last year did not have continuity before the season. Whitworth and Sullivan were new additions. Brown was in and out of the lineup in 2016. Why did they perform well? We had a good group of players with no liabilities and great coaching.

And going the expensive route with 31 year old OLs leaves you with bad contracts and young, talented players departing in FA. We have to start making hard decisions. We're going to lose some good players. Keeping Saffold at the expense of Hav and Brown is not a good call imo.

Let Saffold walk. He's 30 years old with a long injury history. Try to keep Hav and Jamon.
I slightly have to disagree with you. Respectively he has played better under McVay, and honestly if I had to play for mediocre Fisher for so long, I would of been malingering too.
