McVay was optimistic about Henderson getting better. He was running routes IRC. They probably were not at full speed. They will probably have to let him go full speed this week to see if he can play. It's possible he goes on the three week IR list. As mentioned there are a number of players that could be dropped.

Not sure if they put Henderson on IR, this move relates to having a player that can return kicks plus is an excellent gunner for Coach Bonamego besides developing Calais as a pass catcher too. You can't coach speed.

The LA Rams acted quickly today, even after they have just filled their 53rd and final active roster spot. What did they do? The team signed rookie running back Raymond Calais from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad. And can he ever move?

Of course, the only way to claim a player from another team’s practice squad is to sign him to the active roster. Is this some hidden message about running back Darrell Henderson‘s hamstring? Or is this simply the Rams bolstering their return game?

For whatever reason, the Rams land a speedy rookie who can help them on both special teams and on offense. At 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, and with a 4.42-second 40-yard dash, Calais will bring the zip to the Rams return game.

Need for speed
One of the common threads among the LA Rams undrafted rookies was a reputation for being extremely fast. That’s not always the case, as the various methods of recording player speeds can be wide-ranging and unconfirmed. He truly is a solid return specialist, as he returned 99 kickoffs in college for an average of over 25 yards per kick return.

He was not a slouch on offense either. He was First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference as a return specialist in addition to being Third-Team as a running back and all-purpose in 2019. As a running back, he carried the ball 236 times for 1,845 yards and 15 touchdowns. In college, he averaged 7.8 yards-per-carry.

Plus Bonamego gets his guy
Per The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue, the Rams had Raymond Calais targeted late in round seven. After the Buccaneers selected him, the Rams would draft inside linebacker Clay Johnston. Curiously, after Johnston signed on with the Panthers, the Rams responded by poaching the player they had targeted in the seventh round.

ST coordinator wants elite speed in the Rams return game. While it’s almost impossible to judge until a player steps onto the field and faces competition, this appears to be a very good signing for that purpose. The one stickler to everything is the corresponding move to cut a player from the team’s roster. The Rams did “save” a practice squad spot, so whoever is released to make room will likely land on the Rams practice squad. Of course, that is only if that player clears waivers. Stay tuned

We sure need Shelton for depth though.

I don't want to jinx the guy but I'm a little worried about Noteboom.
I've never seen anybody have a turnaround after a major knee operation like this.
I don't think they even operated on it till February from what I understand.

I guess it would depend on how his ankle is doing.
it would give us an idea of how severe it is.
It looks like we can still bring two players back from IR after about eight weeks depending on the bye week.

That's why olympic and college track athletes don't have coaches.

Honestly, if Henderson's fine, I'd send Xavier Jones down. Nothing personal, but Calais is a better option and can return kickoffs, unlike Jones.

I agree. If Henderson is close to being back to 100%, then it makes sense to send Jones to the practice squad. Basically he's taking Kelly's place in that role. Calais gives us a Kick return guy, thus we don't have to use Henderson there, and he can focus on his situational opportunities he'll get on offense.

They announced they were signing him pending a physical, which I'm guessing is a way to postpone it to at least Wednesday, when they have said they will have the results from the Terrell Lewis knee tests. If it's bad, they put Lewis on short-term (hopefully) or long-term injured reserve. If it's not, they can look next to how Henderson's hamstring is coming along, with the same options.

Finally, and still hopefully, if all is actually ok with both of them, it gives the team more evaluation time to decide on who to cut (and hopefully move down to the practice squad). My guesses there are one of Trishton Jackson or Xavier Jones, but those are just logical guesses on my behalf.

So there we go - with Lewis to IR, it will be his spot Calais takes.

Somebody tell my wife I was right - she never believes me when I say that happens every now and then ...

Hilariously, CGI Ram texted me and I showed it to her! Not sure it'll give me too much credit, but it made her laugh, so ... worth it. :)
