Watched Tarantino's "Hateful Eight" last night. It got some mixed reviews - and I thought the pacing was a little off. Long periods of less than Tarantino's normally whip-quick dialogue - but somehow more realistic - with some beautiful cinematography of a wintery Montana. Also Kurt Russell rolled back the years - an absolutely great performance I thought. The rest of the ensemble cast was brilliant - as usual in his movies and in the end I thought it was a good, but rather depressing watch. It has a rather jaundiced view of human nature but without some of the triumphalism or heroic virtue of his earlier films - films based on righting a wrong and fighting for survival against the odds (like Kill Bill or Django) - but instead seemed to acknowledge the endless need for pure violence and vengenance that human beings have.
