09:48 2nd Quarter, Rams on opposing 44, 2nd and 10. This is the second of three ill-fated pass plays that result in a non-scoring drive...
Pre-snap:
Protections at the drop are rough. Demby's got terrible position and has lost. Whit doesn't have a good handle on the blindside:
Coverage at the drop show Everett open on a crosser, and Kupp about to come open when he breaks to the sideline behind Cooks & his DB. Goff wants Kupp and waits it out:
Demby's man rushes the throw:
Goff misses behind Kupp, incomplete. Note that if this throw is on time and target we have an easy first down and potentially a big play if Kupp can beat that last DB and he's got help too:
09:43 2nd Quarter, Rams on opposing 44, 3rd and 10. Another pass attempt here.
Pre-snap Browns showing a very obvious double A gap blitz:
Looking at the coverage pre-snap we have 3x wideouts who can serve as a hot read, all of whom are looking at off coverage:
Protections at the snap show double A coming and TG removes one of them:
Coverage at the snap there are no adjusted routes by the wideouts, even Everett continues his route:
Goff sidesteps the rush to find himself still staring at wideout backs lol. Oh and a lot of green to run though he probably wouldn't get the first down:
Goff forces an ill-advised pass to Cooks. Rams squander an excellent scoring opportunity and have to punt:
07:42 2nd Quarter, Rams on their 38, 1st and 10. Defense just forced a 3 'n out and nice field position. McVay goes with the end around here which isn't a bad call given how the Browns haven't been respecting it...
Pre-snap:
At the handoff things look good, big hole in the middle:
This is why Woods isn't a running back lol. At this point the amount of potential big plays continues to add up:
05:54 2nd Quarter, Rams on opposing 25, 2nd and 3. As always in this real estate you don't want to take a penalty or sack. Rams go pass here and get sacked.
Pre-snap shows a 6 man box, sure would like to see a run here vs this look:
At the snap we see Allen chip and release the NT:
Since Allen makes the line calls I give him the benefit of the doubt here, i.e. I suspect it's a miscommunication where he wanted Demby to cover the A gap. Problem is why would he call it that way when there are no other A gap threats? Either way this is a Rams mistake that directly leads to a loss of 9 and our QB taking a hit.
What Goff was seeing with the NT bearing down on him:
00:37 2nd Quarter, Rams on their 35, 3rd and 11. Rams' defense had forced a punt by the Browns on their 41 yard line, and started this drive from their 12 yard line. Skipping some quick pass plays here. Previous play was a false start by Demby that moved them back to the 35 and put them into a more difficult third down situation.
Pre-snap:
At the drop both Demby & Hav's assignments are already lost:
Coverage at the drop:
As the rush closes in Goff's got some options:
He's got Cooks lined up and open just as Demby's assignment hits his arm. Fumble and loss of possession:
15:00 3rd Quarter, Rams on their 25, 1st and 10. They get the ball to start the second half, down 6-3, and begin with a run and a notable cutback against the grain by Gurley...
12:34 3rd Quarter, Rams on opposing 20, 1st and 10. McVay's been rolling to this point with a nice run/pass mix where they've been owning the LOS. Now he's in the redzone so what does he do? Well, a screen to Gurley of course!
Pre-snap:
At the fake Whit, Allen & Demby have their dudes locked up but hold them a beat too long, keeping them in good position to defend the screen.
Goff set to throw and there are 3 unblocked players in Gurley's vicinity and they see it right about now:
11:51 3rd Quarter, Rams on opposing 7, 1st and goal. This is gonna be easy right? It's the Browns so yeah it'll be easy... Right??? Wrong.
Pre-snap:
At the fake nobody even acknowledges the jet action.
At the pitch things still look ok from this vantage, but 22 has the edge and 38 is to the right just off camera. Gurley would be wise to break it upfield here:
Few steps later 38 comes in underneath Whit from the edge and Gurley cuts it up too late. 4 yard loss:
11:09 3rd Quarter, Rams on the 11, 2nd and goal. At this point I recall being pretty hot. In fact I do believe I didn't have anything to throw at the tv...
Pre-snap:
At the snap 95 shoots between Demby & Hav:
Coverage at the snap shows his best option is JRey (Cooks above isn't an option due to rush):
As JRey gets his head around the LB drops back giving Goff second thoughts and he throws it away high:
3:47 3rd Quarter, Rams on their 40, 1st and 10. Browns ate a ton of clock with a TD drive and the Rams came out to convert one first down with a 13 yard pass to Cooks to put them at the 40. Rams now losing 13-10 and this is a critical series to reestablish the lead...
Pre-snap:
At the drop Goff reads right first. Pocket looks great:
Coverage at the drop:
Goff turns to Cooks, since Woods' inbreaking route isn't there:
Goff throws it a bit late, interception (he also has Gurley as a late developing option):
