I honestly think that Stewart is a better prospect than Gillotte, even though he went later.

This could be another situation where our "loss" turns into a huge gain.
Like last year when we we were willing to give up a ton of assets for Bowers and less understandably Byron Murphy but ended up with both Verse and Fiske sometimes other teams save us from ourselves.

Shame we didn't give Atlanta that same grace lol.

I feel like the Rams were overaggressive in viewing Gillotte as a "Hoecht" type.

Stewart ended up much better value and I think a better prospect for us.

Sometimes the best moves are the ones that didn't happen.

Were you a fan of the Fiske trade? He had a good season and finished 3rd place for defensive rookie.
Trades are subjective. Each one needs to be evaluated on their own merit. I liked the Fiske trade and I would have been good with trading for Gillotte.

When a team has a good roster and is a Super Bowl contender they have fewer holes to fill. I prefer they chase impactful players. Plus their picks the following year are likely to be so late in each round that they are not as valuable as perceived. A late second is almost a third. In an average draft a late second round pick ends up being very similar to round three players in talent. So trading next years picks isn’t always a bad deal

But they traded up for Fiske and it worked out.

I hate to say the Chiefs rode their luck and the draft came straight to them. Loved their picks. The rich get richer. I put us in that bracket too, along with the Bills and Eagles. Washington have had a great offseason so far. Dare I say the Seahawks have too? You can’t write of the 9ers and they still have great players on both sides of the ball even if they were diminished last year. I rate the Cards GM just not their QB and head coach.

It’s never easy to win a SB and I fancy our chances, but it’s shaping up to be one of those seasons where the overall standard of competition will be higher

Of course trading up isn't always a bad thing. In this particular instance though I prefer the player we ended up with, but the story hasn't even started there so we'll see how it turns out.

Other than that, like you mentioned before a potential trade of a future late 2nd for a present early 3rd would obviously be a steal for the Rams if that was the case. However if the media is correct about 2026 being a much stronger class, I still don't like the idea of trading that draft capital. Iirc the media at this time last year was saying 2025 would be a weaker class than 2024 and they appeared to have been right about that.

I also didn't like trading the future 4th, but that's a bit more amenable as a mid round pick imo.

I think they may have wanted Gillotte because he’s more of a Hoecht build. Stewart is on the small side.

After they traded up for Fiske they said, or it was reported that they didn’t really like any of the DL options that would be left on the board, and they had a higher grade on Fiske, than where they ended up picking him. So, if they had a late first round grade on Fiske, that trade for a future second round pick was a steal. Maybe this was a similar situation.

Plus in a weak class and few needs it makes sense to trade up. If they were willing to give up next years second round pick for Gillotte they must have had a pretty high grade on him.
