I don't hate this change. Bachman should be hungry as hell and that can lead to good things. Can also lead to being careless trying to do too much. Hopefully he seizes his chance to belong.
I think if he just secures the ball safely and makes good decisions it will end up being a good change. Don't expect big returns just take what is there and don't fuck our field position by being stupid.

I don't think much of Ventrone. But for the millionth motherfucking time: the primary problem with teams is that McVay wants upside types on the bottom of the roster instead of hardcore teams types. There is a significant difference in those player types as it translates into that third phase of the game. Other organizations who actually respect teams and build to have good units undoubtedly reserve bottom roster spots for them.

So Ventrone probably deserves to be fired. But at some point McVay needs to look in the fuckin mirror. This approach and the difficulties it puts on his teams units has been his fault for a very long time.
Very valid considering those special teams types know that performing well in that role is the ONLY reason they remain employed.

Pulley & now Bachman, who might not wow you, but will read the punts right move the ball forward plus has reliable hands.

All I am looking for is secure the punt & get me 10 positive yards. One small step for man, one giant leap for Ramkind.

Looks like Bachman had 22 punt returns for 124 yards for LV last year. An average of 5.6 yards.

Honestly I think the blocking has been more problematic than anything. But let's hope this is a good wake-up call regardless.

9 Fair catches. So I’d guess that means he only had 13 actual returns. 13/124 = 9.54 per return. At least I hope that what it means

Wish that were true but nope. Fair catches aren't included when considering average per return. Bachman's average per punt return last year was only 5.6. Below is a screenshot of his 2025 stat.

Wow. ST needed a fall guy, I guess.

IMO Smith was terrible at KR but decent as a PR.

Blockers are worse than the returners, IMO.

Curious to see who lines up at PR and the 2 KR.
Smith was a disaster waiting to happen on punts. He would let punts touch down right in front of him and frantically try to field it multiple times. He also had a penchant for fielding punts inside his own 5 yard line instead of letting it bounce into the end zone. He just looked completely terrified trying to catch a punt. He’s just one part of equation though because the gunners have been a disaster. Special Teams needed to be sent a wake up call.

OK, maybe they listened to the show. In the presser, it sure sounded like they were going to stay with Smith.

When given some room, which wasn't often, I thought Smith was a viable returner. His indecisions warranted a move. Didn't think they would cut him.
He had one job. Catch the ball. He couldn’t do that.

I’m afraid Whittington is the same.

Both of them reminded me of the guy from the mummy that runs straight into the wall. Like running full speed into a wall of bodies.

Regardless Rams need to work on their ST and get creative once again. Fakes need to become a thing like the old days.

Yeah it has to help for the players on teams to see Smith get his walking papers. Maybe we'll see a little more intensity from the units.

If one dude was a fuck up we all got smoked because of it. It really does build camaraderie though.

He had like 24 punt returns in college too. Again, IMO, it had more to do with reading the punts correctly then the return yardage. Smith was averaging 9,9 per return, it was his in ability of judgment on punts that led to his realease.

IMO, this is a strength of Bachman's. If you recall in the third preseason game there was a short punt, where Bachman, ensured everybody was out the way and allowing the punt to bounce out of bounds. Then Presley went out there and a similar punt short, Presley rushed up to catch it, fumbled it and lucky the ball kicked out of bounds. I feel strongly that Bachman will not be a liability, he will not be a glowing asset, but right now, being able to judge punts properly so the Rams start their drives at the 20 yard line and not the 5 yard line would be a win.

Lot of fans don't seem to understand that the decision making in that role is crucial. It's really more about making sure you have someone who is unlikely to fuck up.

If Bachman can just solve that for us, then maybe they can work on some of the other areas of special teams where they are failing miserably.

And then maybe, just maybe Les can identify a fucking return man for us midrounds in the next draft. Someone who makes good decisions and offers ball security back there but also adds elusiveness in space. I know. Crazy talk.

That was such a genius fake. Back when ST was the only hope we had for first downs
