And if Higbee goes down there's nothing on the roster proven to be able to step in. The biggest thing a championship team can have is depth because everybody suffers injuries. We have no depth at TE, RB, WR and CB. Our depth in the front 7 is iffy and who knows what we'll have along the OL.

We'll be flying with more 3 WR sets in 11 personnel as a tribute to Stafford's arm and less 12 personnel trying to accommodate Goff. jmo.

Higbee is just adequate, not great, and he's been dealing with a bunch of injuries. Outside of that, it's pretty bleak. Rams had planned on getting Hopkins involved, and he only dressed for 5 games, and wasnt injured. When McVay gets a new toy, he utilizes it, and yet Hop had to jump in a dumpster to show his mom that his uniform got dirty.
Everyone wants to point to the deep threat, or lack thereof, yet there was no safety valve help from the TE's, all the pressure on Kupp and Woods

The Rams have utilized a "redshirt" year for multiple guys who have ended up contributing over the years...and I'd put Hopkins in that category....like SJD, Kiser, Littleton. Hopkins didn't have a real preseason with games to move up the depth chart and he lacked to actual experience to be given a chance over either Everett or Mundt. I wouldn't take his lack of action last year as us doubting his ability. To the contrary I'd take us letting Everett leave for not a very big contract as us affirming our belief in Hopkins.

We'll find out what they thought of Hopkins soon enough. If they draft someone else at TE, then we know there was a worry. If they don't, then McVay must like him and just felt that they were going to be able to use last year as a true redshirt year for him. TE has a lot of responsibilities in McVay's system, so that wouldn't be a surprise.

With that said, I do agree that I'd have a higher level of confidence in him if he saw the field even a little more last season.

Hopefully it was just a redshirt year for Hopkins!

Not doubting that at all. But again if Higs goes down we have jack and shit that's proven in the TE room that they can play in the NFL.

We'll have to see what Hopkins looks like following a real pre-season camp and games, but i,m not going to sweat it just yet.

Fair. I would say I'm a pretty harsh assessor of talent after a lackluster rookie campaign but TE's are tough. They notoriously take time to develop with all the responsibilities and reps in TC during covid were given to starters last year. That was the Rams plan with the limitations on them. I'm not saying Hopkins will be a beast and it looks like he is not gonna be an inline guy no matter what but I'm willing to see what happens this year.

To Oldschool's point, we have to fill out depth across the roster and I'm fine with where we're at with TE knowing that we have a ton of depth needs at lot of places.

It is literally Day 3 of Free Agency, still a ton of time to go in FA, plus the draft. Wait, our Roster isn't complete and has some holes? Yes, as does every other team. A lot will change in regards to the roster between now and game 1.

You can't have Stars everywhere and depth everywhere. You have to take risks and gambles in certain roster areas. Every front office does it, and they all do it a little differently. Ultimately, I trust our FO. I understand the risks that they choose to take. Some of you guys stress way too much over the off-season. Ultimately, I have no control over it, so I am going to relax and enjoy.

Nice post. It's still early no need to act like we're up shit creek here because we don't have the best depth in the league.

Also newsflash: our roster is superstars supplemented by draft picks and JAGs. With this approach we're never gonna be flush at all the backup/depth spots.

Hopkins has a good combination of size and speed--We'll see, potential all-pro candidate?

Mundt is an excellent blocker...Plus he does have the ability to catch the ball too, good third TE as we await the emergence Brycen Hopkins.

Guessing the Rams are looking for a status quo at TE, with Higbee and Mundt in the same roles; and hoping Brycen Hopkins can fill Everett’s role.
