I love cap space. But for $7-10m, this seems like a good team deal to lock in an above average TE. Plus we have Davis as a cheap, young backup. So we can eliminate any TE needs FA and draft wise for a bit. Except for maybe back end drafting. No real quality needed to throw at this position for a couple years.

Surprised by this... I thought they were gonna roll with the young guys next year..

I'd hate to say I told you so to those who balked at me saying it is more likely we sign him to an extension than trade or cut him but..... yeah lol. Anyway, I don't find this as a surprise. He's clearly a favorite of McVays and he's a reliable midrange TE. Curious how that works with his dead years from previous reworks but due to those I figured this was a more likely move.

One media pundit calls it a 3 year extension, the Rams say it's a 2 year extension, ... makes me think that this new contract starts this year and carries thru the end of 2025. If so, the team may actually get a few dollars of 2023 CAP relief if the reported $27/30Mil. over 3 years is correct. I'd also assume the future years (2024-2026) dead money gets absorbed into this contract. Just thinking out loud here, but I'm hoping.
jmo.

According to Spotrac and OTC, Higbee's pre-extension contract carried a $9.125M cap hit for 2023; and a $2.85M cap hit in 2024 (voidable year) despite being a free agent.

Will be interesting to see how this extension impacts 2023 and 2024.

Good thing we signed Higbee and not let him get away to San Fran. In that case he would have been drafted a Tight End and retired a Wide Receiver. We saved Higs from a terrible fate.
