I guess my biggest question is whether they're thinking about putting him at Center as a rookie.
The line would be significantly beefier, ultimately, I think... I'd put Anchrum in the lead for the starting left guard spot in that case.
We definitely have more depth and options now. If Bruss actually develops this year we could have a decent line. A healthy and motivated Akers for an entire year would be a sight to see behind a beefier line.

I think Allen and Boom get first shot because Mcvay tends to be a loyal sumbitch. By that I mean he feels more comfortable with players in the system longer that have been reliable starters for us, especially in big games.

Allen was our starting center when we won a Super Bowl and Boom has played well in pass pro in several big games including the NFC divisional game vs Tampa and prior year playoff games.

Noteboom struggled as a LG but he really is solid in pass pro at LT, thus the contract he was given.

I am sure everything will get hashed out in preseason and as the season unfolds but Mcvay is no Bill Parcells or Jimmy Johnson who yanks players after a bad snap or to light a fire under them.

I think Bruss gets a legit shot because he was a high draft choice and had a great college career that they are trusting will translate. One bad preseason game won’t put him in the doghouse but he does need to show well.

This will never happen but I’ll dream (or perhaps hallucinate):
LT Note / AJax on standby
LG Nate Risner (FA) / Anchrum swing OG
OC Allen / until Avila ready
RG Bruss/Avila on standby/Coleman swing IOL
RT Hav / McClendon
Best combo settling in by mid-season:
LT Ajax
LG Risner
OC Avila
RG Bruss
RT Hav

If you slide Avila to LG and insert Shelton at C, that could well be the 2023 O-Line.

Now for 'dreaming', I would recommend the Boobie and Booty threads over on the Off Topic forum.

Allen's knee is a matter of "when", not "if" his knee goes out.
That was my point in my lineup projection. I’m ok with Note and Allen starting the season but we need a plan 1A when either underperforms (including preseason) or gets hurt again.

I hope Bruss is ready for prime time this year but he wasn’t last year. Everyone penciling him in as a starter, is that just based on him having been selected on day 2 last year?
Since Bruss was injured early amid total confusion and injuries on the Oline, I don't think he was given a fair trial You are hearing hope for what he might be with a real chance this year. But he has to be ready on Day One in camp or he probably won't be a starter.

Yeah I think with Allen you know there's a comfort zone between him and Stafford with the Super Bowl run. Staff has said he'll correct the Center's calls when he needs to and oversees them, but he's not going to want to deal with someone learning the calls if it isn't necessary.

So Avila at Center is certainly possible. Especially if Boom wins LT, because then you have Jackson for LG. But learning the reads at the LOS is one of those elements that will factor in. No idea to what extent they may be similar to what TCU does.

I don't think they're particularly tough to learn btw. Just the nature of them. But maybe with McVay there's layering and shit interacting with the pass game and whatnot. Would not surprise me if our protection reads were more complicated than most.

In Jourdan's latest column she suggests that Avila will eventually take over at C. (And Noteboom will eventually move to G).

It really does seem like she's carrying water for people in the building who believe that Jackson will be the LT.

I'm pretty sure Noteboom, Allen, Shelton and Hav will be 4 of the starting 5. Its possible Avila could start at the last guard spot. But we could see Jackson there.

I'd prefer Jackson at left tackle but its Noteboom's job till he gets hurt. Which will probably mean Jackson becomes the guy at left tackle. Allen is injury prone too. Whoever goes down first might determine which spot Avila mans. If its Noteboom then maybe left guard. If its Allen then center.

Noteboom's likely going to start on the PUP list, though; Achilles injuries are no joke. A-Jax will start for at least the amount of time Noteboom is out, if healthy. If the line shakes out the way you see it, Anchrum, in my opinion, will get the first opportunity at the open guard job, given his veteran status (although Avila and Bruss will certainly compete for it).
