Not much buzz around here on Hampton

Hey girls, check this out:

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman included Hampton on his annual “Freaks” list before the 2022 season and it’s easy to see why. According to Feldman, Hampton can sumo deadlift 600 pounds and incline press 365 pounds, showing remarkable lower- and upper-body strength in the weight room. He was also clocked at 21 mph on GPS”

The article says he’s good at football too :)

I loved the Hampton pick. He really is talented and physically-gifted, but he’s produced with those traits. The only issue is that he’s light and his frame is maxed out, but as a pass rusher, he’s talented and surprisingly enough, fairly technically-advanced, given his conference.

Last year Morris tried to go with a lot of nickel defenses. As such it was obvious that the Rams missed having a SAM OLB on the field behind Floyd. Staley dropped the position and Ebukam who is a SAM more than an edge/DE was allowed to walk. Hampton has the speed and agility to play that role. They tried to use Hardy last year but it was clear he would be a work in progress and might not be suitable.

If Morris moves to a base nickel then Jones and Hampton would be his LBs with Jones playing inside and Hampton on the strongside. Mathis gives Morris the ability to play an OLB behind Hoecht in much the same way on early downs.

JACK Young
DT Donald
NT Brown/Murchison
DE Hoecht

SAM Hampton
MIKE Jones
WIL Mathis

Safeties Lake and Yeast
CBs Durant, Rochell/McCutcheon

Base Nickel;
Pull Mathis
Play SCB Hodges-Tomlinson

With Hampton as a SAM the OL won't know if he's coming or staying back. It also gives the Rams the ability to stunt Hampton and Young on a blitz. By playing Mathis on early downs it strengthens the perimeter on both sides but still leaves Jones over the A gaps. It also inhibits those quick early down short passes. The Rams won't normally get a lot of early down pressure should offenses pass because that is the inherent weakness of Fangio style mixed fronts with their delayed read/react. It's why if Donald retires after this season those early downs simply will stay the same because Donald is handicapped by Morris' Fangio style DL play. Donald's advantage is his quickness, take that away and you take away half of Aaron's advantage. It's why Donald's production dropped last year even before his injury.

I can’t see that happening but am not against it vs a team like the 49ers (and Seachickens) when they are in 12 personnel sets

We have options to get bigger only if one of those de facto “Off Ball Linebackers” can cover a TE which I don’t see I am afraid. I think its more likely that an extra safety comes in to play in the box

Did we play a 4-3 at any point last season? I don’t recall

I think Woodbey is the new Safety/Linebacker hybrid.

Played against players who will be selling insurance this summer when they graduate. We all said this shit about Brian Quick Appl. State remember that turd picked #33. Hope he turns out to be good.

Quicks problem wasn’t talent, it was between the ears. Quick had all the makings of a decent player, and the athleticism to be more than that.

Last year Morris played a lot of Fangio style mixed fronts on early downs. It's why Gaines isn't here. Gaines is a one gap penetrating DT. Morris wanted a two gap 0T that is why they drafted Brown. That read/react style front is why Donald's and Floyd's production dropped. It's why this defense dropped into the bottom half of the defensive rankings last year. It's why Wagner wanted out after one season as did Ramsey. Both players asked to be traded or otherwise released from their contracts.

Why do you think I've been saying that Morris plays what he wants to play, and does not scheme to play to his player's strength's. Why do you think he buried Rochell in favor of Kendricks? It's why unless Pleasant and Lake can change things around this will be Donald's last year. Why do you think Morris dropped Floyd into coverage so often? They only had one starting quality edge last year and Morris dropped him into coverage on passing downs? Give me a fucking break. If Morris is going to play that way they needed to be 4 deep at the edges. Mathis is going to probably take the role of Travin Howard who played WIL behind Hoecht. He is much slower than Howard in terms of long speed but he's better against the run and fast enough to play WIL.

I'm not reinventing Morris' wheel. All I'm doing is plugging in the guys they drafted into roles that the Rams either played by Morris or formerly played but is often used in a Fangio style scheme. Jimmy Lake is a proponent of the Tampa two zone scheme. I think Morris will get away from his quarters look in favor of a Tampa two base look. The difference is Lake normally plays that scheme aggressively. Lake's failings at UW had more to do with his poor offensive schemes. Under Morris, Taylor Rapp was often played in the role of a SAM OLB more than a SS. But he lacked the size and speed needed at the position. The SAM will often play as a pass rusher with the JACK dropping to provide that edge setter. Just go back and picture the way Ebukam played in the 2018 KC game. I was saying back then that Ebukam was becoming an outstanding SAM LB. That position was dropped by Staley. The Rams do play a WIL LB to cover the flats and provide run support on the weakside edge. Mathis would give them the option of dropping Hoecht with his better speed, and sending Mathis who is a better edge setter. Both SAM and WIL are best played by OLBs with size and speed. Mathis timed at 1.59 in his 10 yd split which is good for a man his size and fast enough to play as a WIL in a short zone.

This is why people shouldn't discount the 40 times. It's why it's broken down into 10 and 20 yd split times as well. A taller player is often a long strider, meaning he takes longer to hit his stride. A faster 10 yard split time indicates better explosiveness especially when you are talking about bigger players. Just remember, Travin makes that INT in the championship game because he was in position playing WIL in the same way Ebukam was the impact player he was against KC because he was playing the SAM. With Mathis and Hampton the Rams have significantly upgraded their options should they decide to utilize those positions.

All I'm doing is extrapolating why they drafted 3 edges. At first blush it wouldn't make sense, until you look at it schematically if they scheme it as Young and Hoecht edges, Hampton SAM and Mathis WIL, this would account for why they didn't draft an ILB, because perhaps Morris simply wants to play with one ILB to cover the A gaps.

Morris will have no excuses anymore. It's why I've been saying if played properly this defense can be sneaky good.

The Rams wanted to keep Gaines. They couldn’t outbid Tampa Bay. So they did the next best thing, they drafted as close to a Gaines clone as they could find, in Turner.

I'll be excited to see damn near anyone on the edge not named Floyd. Hard to recall any fly off the edge sacks as most of his came when cleaning up after Donald and company forced QBs out of the pocket. Couldn't diagnose an RPO to save his ass and only the folks here think he was decent against the run (he's still unemployed so what does that tell you). Definitely looking forward to see what Hampton and Young bring to the pass rush. Getting more optimistic by the day.
