ummm ya and that is what elite backs see. that's what defines great and average
Every elite back in this game have had an offensive line. No 1 gets touch more in the nfl behind the line of scrimmage more than Gurley. Im not saying he has been perfect but nitpicking 1 or 2 runs and saying "todds not the same anymore" he dont have any vision he lacks patience hes not fast anymore. That line of thought imho is what i expect to see and hear from non rams fans who dont watch the team everyday every week not from fans who supposed to know the game and know this team. Too many times US Fans rag on our own guys when all other teams will gladly take them.

How is Gurley supposed to take that outside? He got hit as soon as he made the jump cut to cutback in that direction.

He was making the read. The DL was on the OL's right shoulder. Darron Lee was bailing outside and vacated his gap. Everybody else had their blocks made. Gurley recognized that the DL beat Wichmann and was going to blow the play up if he went to the right. He tried to cutback to the left to allow Wichmann to get back on his block and attack the vacated gap.

I think some of y'all are a bit unrealistic in the cuts you expect a HB to make. That DL beat Wichmann. If Gurley keeps going right, that DL is going to force him to run E-W or tackle him behind the LOS. There were a bunch of unblocked Jets on the right side. If he runs E-W, it's getting stopped for a loss.

Havenstein was there to clean up witchmann's block. Gurley doesn't even attempt to follow his lead blocker instead he runs straight into his line men. That's not the Gurley I saw from last year. And he's been doing that a lot this season.

Havenstein wasn't there to clean up Wichmann's block. He was already past the DL. He was attempting to seal Darron Lee. Wichmann's man had already beaten him. Havenstein wasn't in position to stop him. If Gurley had continued going that direction, the DL would have tackled him or strung the play out. Gurley tried to cut back to allow Wichmann to save his block. Wichmann failed to do so.

Gurley puts his head down and runs straight in to the DL. what do you mean how can he go outside. you need to watch that play again if he steps right after the handoff he is still running.

and Dx don't play your a better rams fan than me card that shit don't cut it with me. imo that's what I see you can see whatever you want but don't tell everyone else they are wrong because you say so.

Football isn't played in slow motion with hindsight. Gurley has to give Kendricks time to set his block up. Havenstein is washing his man down the LOS to clear a hole. The play is designed to go between Kendricks and Havenstein. By the time Havenstein gets thrown out of the way, Gurley can't do anything.

Gurley can't just bounce outside when he gets the ball. David Harris would run right past Kendricks's block if he does that. People here often overlook that LB angles are dictated by how the HB attacks the LOS. Coaches call it pressing the line of scrimmage. Gurley is being patient on that play. By staying inside, he forces Harris to stay inside. That allows Kendricks to make the block to seal him out of the play. The problem here is that Havenstein has to sustain his down block and open up the lane. He fails. When he fails, Gurley has nowhere to go. It's too late to bounce outside.

Gurley can't simply bounce outside immediately when he receives the hand-off because Kendricks won't be able to get out in front and block Harris. Harris's pursuit angle will change. Instead, he'll flow over the top and look to string the play out to keep Gurley running E-W.

Gurley did exactly what he was supposed to on that play. He gave his blockers time to set their blocks up. Problem is that Havenstein's down block was the key to the play. Havenstein had to wash Williams down the LOS and seal him. Instead, he allowed Williams to throw him inside and settle right into the hole. Great play by Williams. Bad play by Havenstein. Nothing Gurley could do.

well Jrry I just don't agree with you on this one. maybe that's the problem is Gurley is staying with the design and not seeing the whole picture. our line sucks run blocking I agree but Gurley is not seeing well either. if he follows his blocker to the outside that play works.

Not a running play but did anyone else notice the fake run to TA and then try to pass to him in the flat in the Jets game .
How is that play supposed to work when three guys are pursuing him due to the run fake ? Definitely a head scratcher.
We need X back to break it down for us .

You're entitled to your opinion, but it's clear to me that David Harris would have pursued Gurley outside and had a shot at tackling him for a loss if Gurley tried to bounce it outside immediately after getting the ball. I'll even show photo evidence:

Kendricks isn't going to be in position to get that block if Gurley bounces it. Harris is able to be blocked by Kendricks because Gurley is patient and doesn't bounce outside. Problem is that Havenstein fails to do his job and open the hole inside. It's a huge run if he does.

Gurley can't run straight behind Kendricks here because Leonard Williams makes the tackle if he does. Gurley would have to had to know as soon as he received the ball that he has to bounce outside (impossible to know) and even then, Harris was in position to make the tackle.

Lmao bro when did i ever say that get out your feelings you can rag on Gurley all day idc but if i disagree im going hit the disagree button and let you know why. Thats what this is all about a debate you expect to voice your opinion about a player and i do the same. I never said you wasnt a good FAN or didnt love this team cause obviously you do im stating the fact that while WE as fans might see a cut back lane doesnt mean that they are always there. Hell even Zeke on the cowboys miss hella open lanes. Every run I have seen from here this year he was already past the line of scrimmage. If you cant see that the oline is a bigger problem then Gurley thats on you.

I wish we could get a little more creative with our run game. Gurley can't get past o-line. I'm a total noob when it comes to actually football knowledge, but can Gurley run off the edge? It seems like he just gets stuffed in the middle almost every single time. I feel like that could space out the holes. ANd having a good passing game should help.

Pretty much what we already know. Our run blocking is absolute garbage. To be fair, the Jets are one of the best run-stopping defenses in the league. Lots of teams are going to look stupid on film going against that defence. But still. Gurley has nothing to work with. It'd be nice if he made a few more plays out of nothing. Special backs should be able to do that from time to time. But no RB is going to be able to do it consistently. It's pretty insane some expect Gurley to be able to.

The only one that looks like a bad read is the very last one. There was a hole to the right but TG seems to stay dead center. But all in all hard to argue the fact the run blocking many times has been pretty bad.
Which is really odd the pass blocking has been pretty good on avg.

I saw the play from a different angle and I concede. That was all Whichmann. Which reminds me that Brown needs to play.

All I can say is WTF!. These are examples of why the running game is so putrid. I really wonder what the overall IQ is of our O-Line. Poor double teams, poor feet, over-extending themselves, missed assignments, lack of effort, and I could go on. They don't look like a sound unit. These are examples of 5, 6 or even 7 guys playing as individuals with each not knowing what the guy next to him is doing. I thought we had one of the best O-Line coaches in the league, and to watch this leads me to believe he doesn't know what he's doing and/or we have really weak talent. From what I have seen from these examples, and throughout the season, I'm of the opinion it's a combination of both. This has been such a glaring issue, its just incomprehensible it continues to go on. If our O-Line cannot create push, there is no back in the league who would gain much of anything behind them. I've said it so many times... the offense starts with the O-Line, and right now I don't see anything telling me it's going to instantly get better with Goff under center. I truly fear for his safety this weekend and going forward.
