Just letting you know that NFLn is covering before and during the practice of Ones vs Ones today. Maurice Jones Drew, Steve Smith and Andrew Siciliano.

They keep breaking to the above personalities to speak about the Raiders and the Rams. I believe they will show the scrimmage, which I like much better than actual Preseason Walmart employee tryouts....I just don't have much interest in watching this guy out there...

Antonio Brown is reportedly out due to a strange injury...He didn't wear the proper "slippers" when recieving cryogenic treatment, and his feet were frost bitten (ouch!)

You know what..I see the Rams and the Raiders on the field via NFLn coverage, and so it must be earlier than that 7pm eastern time I quoted above. Maybe that's a replay? Anyway, they are showing practice right now if you want to see it!

According to Steve Smith, the difference between the teacher Chuckie Gruden vs the student Sean McVay is the types of West Coast systems. Gruden does the old school original West Coast, and McVay does a West Coast hybrid, which spreads the field more for Jared Goff...

Or as I like to see it: Goff allows for stretching the field vertically because he can do it all with accuracy.

McVay learned his craft from guys like the Gruden brothers and Mike and Kyle Shanahan, who run versions of the West Coast offense. But that said Sean's offense uses some concepts but IMO isn't really a west coast system. He understood the issue of a true west coast system with a new struggling QB and didn't want him standing there thinking his way through each play.

Classic Norv Turner uses a strong running game to setup deep shots downfield. McVay is far more explosive then any of these other guys. He uses mis-direction and motion to setup his running game. He then plays off that adding play action and a myriad of short passes to then setup his deep shots downfield. That is not West Coast. From what I've seen most plays have a deep option but Goff usually doesn't throw it unless he sees a breakdown in the coverage on that route. Instead he will run or pass medium to short. Sound familiar? It's very similar to what the Pats do. They rely on a strong running game and the dink and dunk to setup the deep pass.

Also, I think the Rams might add a wrinkle into their oline blocking scheme. I take my cue from the type of RB's they have. Gurley can be power or slasher type of runner as he has the speed and power to run both styles. Brown has speed but not break away speed and is more of your classic power runner. Henderson is the slasher type with breakaway speed and acceleration.

So what I think they will do is begin to play a gap blocking scheme. This will allow each RB to play within his comfort zone to optimize their performance. Doing that will allow them to more easily accommodate cutting back the snaps for Gurley without compromising the run game. It's a form of zone blocking with man concepts without the power blocking component. My only concern is that Blythe is very inconsistent with man on man blocking and will often struggle on the second level and he could end up frequently over matched especially when DC's see the blocking scheme. But other than that I see every reason to switch from a horizontal outside zone to a gap scheme.

Any reports on whether or not Carr's eyeliner was running down his face today?

Sorta....On 7 on 7, Steve Smith said that in both the Raiders & Rams systems, the QB should get the ball out quickly and decisively. Carr had happy feet, which Smith said meant that he was seeing things that were not covered in practice. He also said in such drills, the ball should never hit the ground, and with Carr at QB, it happened often..

I really believe these scrimmages are worthy of attendance, unlike preseason. Owners get to charge big prices for Preseason games, however. I want to see Ones vs Ones and not the UDFA's in a fake meaningly game, necessarily. Scrimmages are legit to me, outside of a real game. Reporters need to cover every one, but probably don't have money in the budget, since this a fairly new team habit (and as many of them). Media are going to have to adapt.
