Even though they haven't made it to the World Series, the Dodgers have made the playoffs something like 10 of the last 14 years. That does wonders for a team's popularity.
Having Magic as the face of ownership is probably the biggest boost they get though and can't be understated.

I'm not an STL fan nor an LA fan. I am a Rams fan. I have backed and followed them through the good and (mostly) bad. They are my team, this day till my last day. I don't care how popular they are. No team in any sport will ever mean as much as this team does. I am a Rams fan. That's all I need.
BIG DITTO's! I couldn't have said it better! GO RAMS Forever!!

The Lakers exploded in the '80s with Showtime and Magic,

Even though they haven't made it to the World Series, the Dodgers have made the playoffs something like 10 of the last 14 years. That does wonders for a team's popularity.

The Lakers are the probably the most successful pro sports franchise in the history of the world. Magic aside, and I've been a Lakers fan many, many years, that team has been a big deal forever.

Did you know that in 69 years they have only missed the playoffs 9 times............and 4 of those have been the last four seasons. So prior to this little slide in 65 years they made the playoffs 60 times. That's one reason that team is loved by the city.

@MadGoat calls it, when they win the Rams will be popular.

The Patriots only had about 10 fans before Belechick, and that was only because they were holdovers from jumping on the Bill Parcells band wagon.
Now look at them.
On second hand, don't....

Very true..........I think it's going to be interesting to see how things unfold when Brady is gone.

Just watched the 30 for 30 on them the other night.
http://www.espn.com/30for30/film?page=guru-of-go
Still hard to believe what happened, so sad.
Big Hank had a lil brother that went to a JuCo....then I believe CS Dominguez-Hills....Good guys.
I think heart arrhythmias are taken a lil more serious because of him. That guy was a horse...could run all day. He was a beast at SC too.
My nephew played on the Lions....he walked on...but his freshman team came so close to a NCAA bid....a guy missed a gimme layup. I haven't been able to watch College Basketball since he graduated...but I'll always pop a Lion game on if they're on espn...or that radio station if I'm in my car.

Growing up in LA in the 60s and 70s, I have to say that the Rams and Dodgers were about equal with each other. I might have to give the nod to the Dodgers. It seemed that Rams players showed up more in TV shows and on talk shows but going to a Dodger game was something virtually every little kid I knew got to do. You had 82 chances to go see a game and companies were always giving away promotional tickets, our little league team went at least once a year, etc. Walter Alston was a legend of a coach, and you had the likes of Drysedale (sp?), Wills, Davis, Mota, and Koufax. Then it just seemed we transitioned into Lasorda, Sutton, Cey, Russell, Lopes, Garvey, Sax, Valenzuela........

But my love for the Rams started with my dad when I was 5. My dad wasn't much of a baseball fan so he took me to Rams games occasionally. And when we went, it was like an event for everyone there - a completely different experience than a baseball game. You could feel the energy. It wasn't just a fun day in the sun watching baseball. It was FUCK YEAH!!! I'M GOING TO WATCH THE RAMS!!!

So I think more people followed the Dodgers back then but the fan base for the Rams was more serious. I think that will be what happens over the next few years if Goodhell doesn't continue to kill the goose laying the golden egg.

And I love my Lakers. But I just don't think basketball will ever capture the hearts and emotions of baseball and football in the LA area. The fans will definitely support the Lakers when they are winning but that support will fall off much faster than either of the big two IMO. Hockey? Again... I love my Kings but hockey will probably always be a niche sport in CA.

As far as college football, Trojans are and pretty much always have been #1 with UCLA bringing up the rear. They are both more popular than the Rams right now but I think that will change pretty quickly.

Hank and Bo were a year older than me, and I remember how cool it was that they were going to play ball together at USC. I kind of forgot about them until LM went on a tear. Remained a Bo Kimble fan for years. Growing up a die hard Celtics fan I thought Len Bias was a tragedy, then after Hank, Reggie Lewis passed. Sad times indeed. Was so cool that Bo shot the free throw left handed, I think he made em all....

When some dodgers get sent down...I always wanna go see the pitchers in AA or AAA....or a good hitter...cause I hear the minor league games are entertaining...but never have the time....

I was on a Dodger site a few years ago...and I asked what happened to the Dukes? I felt so old...ahahahahahahaha

Oh... and you could watch every Dodger game on channel 11 and listen to Vin Scully and Jerry Doggett while eating your Farmer John bacon and Dodger Dogs. No excuse to not know all the players and what your team was doing back then.

Hello everyone,

I've been a Rams fan since Willie Anderson's ot magic at the Meadowlands. The Lakers will always be number one, yet how popular are the Rams compared to the Dodgers? In terms of sporrs radio, newspaper, history etc?

That's awesome that's my story on here the exact same moment flipper running out of the meadowlands and I like him have never looked back....too funny cheers my dude!!!!

That’s my story as well! I’ll never forget asking “ Where did he go? Why did he keep running?” While everybody was cheering! Lol
