If Cooper ends up on IR then Natson, who is probably on speed dial, would be good to bring in. If he doesn't end up on the IR we could make due, though a good returner changes field position, even affecting how a punter punts and how a kicker kicks. So I'd still bring in Natson. Keep in mind that Shields played WR in college, so he could be an emergency fill in, plus we could even try using Everett in certain situations at WR. There are options.

I don’t know if I co-sign the Natson pickup, sure he looked great in pre season but he did fumble in limited time with the Jets last year

4 potential replacements for Pharoh Cooper in the return game
By: Cameron DaSilva

After staying relatively healthy all offseason and through the preseason, the Los Angeles Rams were bitten by the injury bug on Monday night against the Oakland Raiders. They didn’t lose any key starters on offense or defense, but All-Pro return man Pharoh Cooper suffered a “serious ankle sprain,” according to Sean McVay.

It’ll sideline him for “at least a few weeks” and could require surgery, which would likely put his 2018 season in doubt. To make matters worse, Mike Thomas also suffered an injury, tweaking his groin in the game.

That puts the Rams down their top two kick returners, as well as their primary punt returner. Needless to say, this isn’t a good situation if both players are forced to miss significant time. Here are some potential replacements for Cooper and Thomas in the interim.

WR Cooper Kupp
It’s possible the Rams will just go with Kupp on punt returns rather than bringing in someone to replace Cooper. That doesn’t take care of the void left on kick returns, but Kupp is certainly in the running to fill in for Cooper on punts.

He’s usually surehanded, makes smart plays on the field and has enough shiftiness to make defenders miss as they’re bearing down on him, but he doesn’t bring the same explosiveness that Cooper does.

If Pharoh isn’t out for an extended period of time – we’re talking eight-plus weeks – Kupp could handle the duties. He just shouldn’t be a long-term option.

RB Justin Davis
Davis doesn’t have a great deal of experience as a return specialist, but he did take back kicks in 2015 at USC. He averaged 19.2 yards per return on 11 attempts, but those were the only chances he received at that spot. He’s an elusive player with good enough speed to break away from the pack, but there are some concerns.

He had fumbling problems last preseason, coughing it up a handful of times as a running back. That’s not something the Rams can afford to have happen on returns, which might give McVay pause when considering Davis for the job. It’s worth giving him a look in practice, though.

WR JoJo Natson
Natson was a standout in the preseason for the Rams before getting waived during the final round of cuts. In four exhibition games, he returned nine punts for 100 yards, averaging a very respectable 11.1 yards per attempt. He also took back 14 kicks for 342 yards with a long of 31. Now, that was in the preseason and there’s added pressure in games that count, but Natson was difficult to tackle.

He remains available and the Rams could give him another look, potentially placing Thomas on IR in order to make room for him on the roster. At this point, he would be the most familiar and explosive option.

RB Boston Scott
Scott was a surprise cut by the Saints last week as a sixth-round rookie. He hasn’t been picked up by anyone yet, but he has a skill set that can bring value to the Rams. He was a solid kick returner in the preseason, totaling 188 yards on just seven attempts. He had a long of 35 yards and also had a 13-yard punt return, as well.

The Rams would almost certainly have to waive either Davis or Malcolm Brown to make room for Scott if they went this route, because there’s no way they’d carry five running backs on the 53-man roster. However, it might be an option worth exploring if they feel good about John Kelly as RB2.

If they want outside help they could give Shakeir Ryan a call. He was catching Punts clean last Preseason IMO.

I don't see them cutting Brown, as I'm sure if the Rams cut a RB it's going to be Davis.

I don’t buy that. I think most teams kick it deep in the hopes of having no return. Heck, that’s what the nfl wants
Does make you wonder why then everyone made such a big deal about the Kick Off rule changes.
Now a good punt returner always affects show a punter kicks, which is the biggest reason punters at times will shank a punt.

I was trying to remember this guy name when all the preseason hype was being sent on Hodge. Is he playing any where?

Punt returns and kickoff returns are 2 entirely different animals

I hope to see them give Jon Kelly a shot. I watched him a lot at Tennessee, he's got game and will make the most of this opportunity.

I mentioned this in the game day thread the other day...With the new rules of not getting a running start on kickoffs isn't an onside kick almost impossible to recover now? Or was there some exception for intentional onside kicks?

If you put Cooper Kupp back to receive kick offs the other team may at least try to kick it near the goal line in order to test his return skills. Just the nature of competition.

I may be wrong, but didn't Malcolm Brown return kickoffs in college?
That may be the way to go, ( find somebody already on the roster) so we don't have to release somebody off the 53 to make room for a returner.

Just make sure that player has really sure hands catching.

I believe Natson is available and IMO an easy solution...The only issue is Natson is a PR/KR only, not much of a WR, but I like him in that role. I don't want anybody not securing the football.

Yep have to think that is the move. Jojo earned it, and he's the best candidate as it isn't wise to risk Kupp in that role.

I wouldn't have Kupp on kickoffs, that's kinda crazy. Punt returns for sure, but I wouldn't expose him on KO too. I'd be fine with Kelly or Davis back there to take a knee
I think we just agree to disagree. I don't think teams kick short based on who's returning the ball. From where I sit they all kick it as deep as they can and are more than happy with a touch back. Especially with the new kickoff coverage rules, the league would love to abolish them all together

If the Ram have two reserve WR's injured would you not try to keep any action or remedies on the roster be contained in this WR unit? I think that WR Steven Mitchell has some return expereince in college.

The Rams 4th wide out is Josh Reynolds who is normally not involved with ST's. So he is available here to fill in behind any of the main three who needs a rest. WR Mike Thomas has had injury issues as of late. Now he is dealing with a groin injury. Last season Thomas was hit with a four-game PED suspension then injured his ankle last December and did not dress for the playoff gm. Thomas has only caught 8 passes in 2 seasons. Yes he is a gunner but not at the moment.

Our DL is loaded so a release of 3 tech DT Tanzel Smart would be the least hurtfull cut.

I also wonder about Reynolds as I look at this wideout list. Would like to see him start pushing for playing time, at least. Other than a few flashes last year he hasn't really shown much, and if he's going to do so I would think he'll start pushing his way onto the field here soon.

His role given his frame should be redzone and possession type situations where he can highpoint or bring it in while being covered. This offense needs that element IMO, given their TE situation, so I'd like to see him start getting on the field a bit and making a difference.

Sound thinking IMO....his pre season injury slowed him down in getting this elelment blended into the red zone offense. With Cooks under 5-10, Woods a little over 5-11 & Cooper under 5-11 does provide a need of a over 6-3 Reynolds size receiever in this offense. As Goff improved in his ball placement it sure looks like he would be able to get some serious production from Reynolds @ the back of that endzone for TD's. There does not seem to be a need of a Cooper or a Thomas in this offense at the moment.

P.S TE Mundt who is over 6-4 has a great set of hands not sure about his jump stuff.

They are going to put Cooper on Temp IR, which puts him out six weeks so a cut would not be needed. I concur on Reynolds, he might be needed with the other three so could Gerald Everett who has not been seen lately. With Cooper going to IR and if Thomas is only going to be out two weeks, I would sign Natson. He has the most experience returning punts and he returns kickoffs too. Perfect replacement for Cooper and when Coop comes back and is 100%, Natson is an easy release because he's a PR/KR only IMHO.
