Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Martz took over as head coach after Vermeil stepped down.

And, to be specific, it's a poll on the best Rams head coach, not necessarily the best head coach's tenure during their Rams coaching years.

I.E. if Lombardi coached the Rams a year or two non super bowl seasons, he'd still be the best coach to ever coach the Rams.

So, I'm still good with my choice of Martz. Huge impact and a Rams head coach!

Dick Vermeil only Head Coach to lead the Rams to a Super Bowl Title, so IMO, that makes him the best Head Coach. Martz did a nice job, however, did not win a Super Bowl as Head Coach and that why IMO, he's not the best.

So then by that reasoning, he and Malavasi should be at least tied for 2nd.

Some might view it that way, however, both gentlemen took over very good teams, they could be, I would not have an issue with that. Both were great coordinators, I would give Martz and edge over Malavasi and would have no issue ranking them very high, however, I do believe Knox & Allen should be rated higher based on record alone.

Don't have to sell me on Martz, just gave my reasoning for Vermeil over Martz and Martz's issue was his infatuation for Larry Marmie. Good thing the Cardinals denied permission the first time, which then led to the hiring of Lovie Smith. Martz just got an opportunity to be a Head Coach again of San Diego in the AAF and hired once again his good friend the 75 year old Larry Marmie, who must have pictures of Martz in a tutu, not that there is anything wrong with that.

We had a poll like this a while back I did, I'm tempted to pull up and bump...

I'd say for current times:

1. Dick Vermeil. He earns it with the sole Super Bowl title
2. Chuck Knox. Five division titles in a row in the '70's. Not bad.
3. John Robinson. Our winningest coach. Most playoff victories. Flew under the radar in the shadow of the Whiners of the '80s.
4. Ray Malavasi. took the Rams to their fist Super Bowl, and kept Knox's teams competitive for a stretch.
5. George Allen. Most of his legendary status is with the Foreskins. Had some good years, though with the Rams.
6. Adam Walsh. Championship with Cleveland Rams '45.
7. Mike Martz. Gotta give Mad Mike credit for much of the GSOT, and would have a title, but for the cheating bastards from New England.
8. Sean McVay. Sure to skyrocket up this list. But his first year already makes him worthy of being among the greats. If he just does what we think he will this year, I have him anywhere from #1-5 this time next year.
9. Joe Stydahar. Led Rams in first title in the city of Los Angeles, 1950.
10. Jeff Fisher. Earns some respect from me. Took the Rams to respectability again. Just couldn't get over the hump. All joking aside, I still hurt for the man.

I would agree with this list except Martz would be higher. Plenty of wins, an NFC Title and the fact that Vermeil isn't winning shit without him.

I personally give the number one slot to Chuck.

Vermeil may have given us a Super Bowl but that was his only winning season for us and the stars aligned for him for that and a couple years after.

Chuck Knox gave us the only sustained run of years I can remember.

Martz was one of those stars that aligned. But terrible as a head coach IMO. Genius at play design no doubt.

But Martz's big impact was as offensive coordinator, because as such he won a Superbowl, he never did that as a head coach. So I still see him as an offensive coordinator extraordinaire, but yes he made a decent head coach, even got the Rams to the Superbowl, where there was cheatrioting going on. Martz's big weakness as head coach was in being able to pick good defensive coaches.

No disagreement here with everything you said. Martz gonna ride that "IamrightaboutMarmie" train to the bitter end....

Only thing I will add, is where Martz took over a very good team, largely in part to his being the OC. So I'd give him the edge on that. (Over Malavasi not DV)
