Kobe Bryant was once disgruntled with the Lakers because he wasn't sure of their commitment to winning.

I use that to say that all disgruntledness is not necessarily a bad reflection on character. And I am not saying that AJ is Kobe.

Is the disgruntledness because of selfishness, such as a monetary motive, or because of passion for the game and desire to win?

There's a difference. That needs to be evaluated before he's deemed not a fit due to character. Because as Snead just said a day or so ago, their culture is all about passion for the game and winning.
