Yeah because players like Austin and Tutu have been so successful in the NFL.

Let’s hear the expert analysis and history that shows us how this will be a great addition.

I haven't been able to watch the game as yet, although while Alaric Jackson, Coleman Shelton & Evans apparently received most of the snaps at LT, C & RG, they have all received some pretty poor grades by those who did observe the game. I haven't heard a word yet on who played the bulk of the snaps at LG or who, if any other players, subbed in behind the guys who started the game. How much playing time and at which positions did our other OL reserves see action, ... will guys like Brewer, Kolone, Meredith, Pirtcher and Pope see more action next week or did they receive plenty of snaps in the Chargers game that just haven't been commented on ?
It was great to hear that Anchrum was receiving high marks at RT, although I'm hoping that Evans & Anchrum will switch positions when playing against the Raiders next week.
While some are hoping to add another RB following cuts, I'd also like to see us improve on what we have at Center depth, neither Shelton or Kolone are reliable back-ups imo, and neither seem capable as dual threat OG's. jmo.

Anchrum played so well that I find myself asking why he was not competing at RG with Evans from the beginning of camp. He's a better player and I have zero doubt would be better at RG than Evans too.

I just find it really disappointing that once again there seems to have been faulty slotting logic with our OL in camp. Last year it was the same shit with Boom at LG over Edwards. I figured that would be a thing of the past with Kromer gone but it's impossible for me to understand how/why Anchrum wasn't tried at RG in some sort of competition.

Oh and note that last year many of us saw that coming. This year I can't say that admittedly. I had hoped Anchrum would compete a bit at RG or as part of the starting 5 but did not know enough about any of these depth guys to feel conviction one way or the other. I realize we're only one game into the preseason sched but I hope to see some juggling of roles with these guys in the upcoming games.

Maybe they see him as a tackle only. Preparing for the other tackles to leave eventually.

Although I'm worried they were gonna start Evans at guard. He was a whiff machine in the playoffs at guard. At least that's not happening anymore.

Tutu was really good yesterday. He's not Tavon, he didn't go horizontal with that crappy high strut dance. He hits the hole and accelerates for big plays. Heck, I saw one play, might have been a screen or quick out where I saw him block and take out 2 defenders.

How could Lawler not be rated higher? He was in the Charger backfield so often I thought he was one of their O linemen.

Yep, really pulling for Reed to make it. Loved his college tape and he is doing the same things now. Not a speedster, which is why he fell out of the draft, but instinctive, a hitter, and a leader.

Also thought the OL was better, individually, than I thought after watching a 2nd viewing of the game.

They did struggle with some blitzes, so the teamwork aspect was lacking, but saw Jackson with some nice pass pros. Brewer rarely was overpowered and moved his feet well, and didn't notice Anchrum making any mistakes.

Would have expected Evans to shine against 2nd teamers, but he looked mediocre at best. So the only significant concern on the OL for me.

I'm baffled by it too. I thought the plan was for Anchrum to compete at OG and be depth at OT. With Noteboom here, there's no good reason not to have Anchrum in the OG competition (or trying to train him to play Center, frankly).
JR reed might be a player. Gotta see more
I was a huge fan of his in college. Great instincts. He's Jake Reed's son.

Hopefully he's another Tyreek Hill type instead, the way Staff can sling it.

Since you've now watched the game twice to my zero times, I appreciate your second take on the OL, although it appears they may have struggled more while run blocking than in pass pro. Based on your observations, did our rush game attack the left side of the defensive line, right side, or go up the middle most often ?

I just thought it was a bit late to worry about the Rams having a tiny WR (they got 2) and simultaneously way too early (1 preseason game) to be frustrated about his play.
It just struck me as funny I guess, but no offense was intended.

After watching the game today, I was really happy from what I saw on D and O. Banks, Williams, Jones, Reed, Harris, Tutu, Calais, Meredith, Lawler and Anchrum looked good. Evans sucks though

Harris - dude has some serious skills. His footwork is exceptional, and it shows in his route running. His blocking skills will eventually need some polishing but he has a very high ceiling. One thing to watch is his ball security.

Perkins- smooth and doesn't hesitate. Has a great throwing motion, made the correct reads for the most part and had a handle on running the offense. If he continues to impress I wouldn't be surprised if he takes Wolfords backup spot.

Lawler - a decent rotational player. He was playing against 2nd string and 3rd string players. He should shine, and he did. He'll make the 53

Tutu - I think he'll be our new Tavon Austin, mcVay will sprinkle him in on jet sweeps, screens and trick plays. He needs to gain about 10 pounds of muscle before I can take him seriously as a WR. I'll of course retract my statement if he ends up being a stud his rookie season lol.

Jackson - he showed up multiple times at WR. That route for the TD was so smooth and precise it would be hard to cut him if he continues to shine. I think we keep him ok ST for now until he develops further. I still want to see more from him in the upcoming games.

Jones - I still feel he's a little light in the feet to be our starter week one. However I think he takes over the job mid season. He needs to bulk a little and his instincts aren't always on point. Looks good in coverage but seems to get washed in the run game a little. That screen play he blew up...damn. Future is bright for this kid.

Reed - I kind of focused in on him in the first quarter. This guy has incredible run stopping abilities, always around the ball and has a nose for taking amazing angles. With how deep our secondary looks at the moment look for the Rams to stash him on ST and develop.

Orr - the quick eye test tells me he can play. Most likely a ST player or practice squad but it wouldn't surprise me if another team picked him up from the PS with all the media coverage he's gotten in the last week.

Losers and head scratchers...

Losers,

Bobby Evans
Hodges
Coleman

Head scratchers,

Funk
Jones

Bobby Evans - yikes, I don't know if this dude makes the team. I'm sure he does because the Rams spent a 3rd round draft pick on him. But at least from what I see is he is not a guard. He's a tackle and that's it. Maybe just a backup but at least I don't see him getting blown at tackle like I see him getting dominated at guard. Start of the 3rd quarter getting smashed by a 2nd or 3rd stringer... Not acceptable. Rams need to rethink having him backup Corbett because he'll get Stafford killed.

Hodges - not sure what McVay sees in him? Not a real good arm, seems to not see the field like Perkins does and threw some ducks that probably would be taken to the house if playing against starters. I think he'll be on the first cut. He just doesn't look like a fit.

Coleman - not exactly sure if he'll make the team but the lack of depth at guard will probably guarantee him a roster spot. Hopefully he improves.

Head scratchers,

Funk and Jones - not really sure what to think of them at this point. The online wasn't giving them much room to work with but hopefully they gel and give us a good look at what to expect when they have a little help. One thing I don't see is the short yardage runner we desperately need. Funk might be that guy but he needs to add a little weight.

:thumbsup1: Enjoyed reading that.

Regarding JR Reed… I was going to point out the bloodlines. I like players with bloodlines.

I really don’t want another Tavon Austin. If Tutu isn’t something more than that it is a wasted pick that could have been used for a lot more impact.

Fuck a bunch of trick plays. Give me a grind it out power run game to compliment Stafford and the air game.
Atwell as a receiver bears no relationship to Tavon Austin. Austin was mostly lost/ MIA as a WR. Atwell can really track and catch the ball.

He is definitely a much more WR than Austin ever was. I am just worried being so small he is going to get killed out there. He needs to add 10 - 15 lbs of muscle and then he will be okay.

It appeared they went with Kolone at Center & Meredith at guard, however, Meredith is a natural center and very well could back up Allen, however, I still believe Meredith will be on the practice squad with hope they can add a veteran backup to Allen come September.

I'm curious as to why Kendall Blanton, Dont'e Deayon, or Travian Howard didn't get any snaps.

Ottis Anderson jr RB as well. The Rams that as well.Mcvay especially with his coaching staff.Thought Bryce Hopkins would have worked out better.
That HOF day was cool. Bruuuuce. Then Stafford going back for Mega Tron to get inducted. They brought up Shawn Jefferson helping as a WR’s coach. Then to think The Rams have Van Jefferson with Matthew Stafford throwing passes to Van is really awesome to me knowing that as a Rams Fan.

You knew something was up when The Rams put in a claim just before to a Center just before signing Kolone.

Brian Allen playing a little guard was an indication that maybe Corbett wasn’t the answer & better at playing guard.
Then again Bobby Evans took a step back from the end of 2020 which sucks to see. He might be on the short list.Cutting Bobby Evans will wake a couple players up that is not where you were drafted & where you were on in the rotation.
Bryce getting cut will only add to that. Not saying any of that will happen ?

Couple of thoughts after reading this thread…

Jourdan mentioned that Shelton has been dealing with a toe in the Q&A after one of her articles. That would probably explain his sudden challenges in camp and this preseason game. A toe injury would kinda explain how his performance has suddenly fallen off the cliff.

I’m pretty much convinced that Hopkins is a goner despite his 4th round draft status. He doesn’t love football like almost all other Snead picks do and it shows in camp and the preseason game. Some might call it a lack of heart. Not something that McVay is likely to want around his other players. Hard to understand how Ram scouts missed such a critical requirement.

Evans is an OT, apparently. Coaches might as well accept it. Actually, I think he could be a pretty damned good RT. But Carberry is probably wasting everybody’s time playing Evans at OG. Same thing with Boom. Stop with forcing a square peg in a round hole with these two.

Stop with the complaints about Atwell’s diminutive size, already! He may put on a very few pounds during his career, but we should be focusing on what he CAN do and CAN be right now And enjoy watching him drive D’s crazy. He is a weapon that Snead/McVay really wanted at pick 57 and early reports from camp and certainly this Charger preseason game show us why. IOW, it’s not about his size, it’s all about his production.

Prior to the draft I considered OLB and ILB to be Rams biggest weaknesses. But I was wrong and I now think that Rams are far better in both areas than last year and my faith in these Ram coaches has been simply reinforced.

I’ve seen some pundits and a few fans claim that Rams are thin at CB. Not me, though. Our overall secondary is loaded plus several players are like chess pieces that Morris can move around and/or change assignments on the fly. Our secondary is the least of our problems.

Our WR corps is a legit 7 deep even without the injured Skowronek or the scintillating Harris (whom I consider a bit of a WR anyway). Trishton Jackson and Koski are numbers 6 and 7, respectively. I can’t recall a Ram WR corps with such quality this deep in all my 54 years of fandom.

It is my hope and expectation that Ram starters will overcome rustiness from lack of action in preseason and jump out to a quick start come September.
