CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Browns passed their first prime-time test. The second one won't be nearly as easy.
Here come Aaron Donald and those big, bad Los Angeles Rams.
The defending NFC champions, with an offense teeming with talent and defense led by incomparable star tackle Donald, will visit Cleveland in the Browns' first nationally televised Sunday night game in 11 years.
On Monday night, the Browns (1-1) bounced back from a dreadful 30-point loss in their season opener to Tennessee by bullying the New York Jets, who were already missing quarterback Sam Darnold when his replacement, Trevor Simiean, went down with a season-ending injury.
The uber-hyped Browns, who have gone from winless two years ago to somewhat overexposed in 2019, get a chance to see how they stack up to a legitimate Super Bowl contender, one fixated on winning an NFL title this season.
''It'll be a challenge and we'll be able to really measure where we're at as a team,'' said Browns guard Joel Bitonio. ''Now it's a true team, a true playoff team, a team that was in the Super Bowl, a team that we can see, 'Hey, how are the Cleveland Browns this year?'''
It's hard to gauge them to this point. The Browns were undisciplined in Week 1, committing 18 penalties and allowing the Titans to score 28 unanswered points in the second half. Cleveland cleaned things up considerably against the Jets, but quarterback Baker Mayfield had his second straight shaky performance and the Browns suffered a couple major injuries that may force first-year coach Freddie Kitchens to play rookies in key spots.

That could help the Rams (2-0), not that they really need any.
Quarterback Jared Goff and the Los Angeles offense have had some issues, but Donald and the rest of the defense are playing at a high level already. They shut down New Orleans last week, helped by Donald inadvertently sidelining Saints quarterback Drew Brees with a thumb injury.
Browns star Odell Beckham Jr. said Donald will have everyone's attention.

''There's no way to even go around him,'' said Beckham. ''He's probably the best player in the league. If not the best player in the league, one of the most disruptive players I've ever seen. So, yeah, No. 99 has to be accounted for. The game plan starts right there. They have a lot of other stars, a lot of very, very talented, great players, but it starts with 99.
''So we have to get that handled, and we're going to be tested in every position.''

DONALD, DUCK
The two-time AP Defensive Player of the Year, Donald has no sacks and just two tackles through two games. The numbers are deceiving as teams are scheming to stay clear of Donald. The Browns will probably do the same.
''Everybody is sliding to him,'' defensive end Michael Brockers said. ''He's going to get a lot of attention, and that's what's happening now. It's leaving a lot of opportunities for other guys to make plays. As the season goes on, they're going to have to pick their poison on which guys to block, and that's when it's going to get really fun.''
It didn't get fun for Donald until Week 4 last year. He have record a sack in his first three games and still finished with 20 1/2.

THROW IT
Mayfield has been guilty of holding onto the ball too long, and not taking advantage of receivers being open while trying to complete long passes.
He's still getting into a rhythm with Beckham, who sat out the preseason but showed why he's elite on Monday by scoring on an 89-yard play.
''It's a learning curve,'' said Mayfield, who while not as accurate as usual has still completed 60 percent of his throws. ''Needing to know when I can take my shots and check the ball down to get completions. It's a little difficult at times but, like I keep harping on, I just need to get completions.''

LINE WORRIES
The Browns could exploit inexperience up front for the Rams, who are likely to have three untested starters on their offensive line.
Right guard Austin Blythe is unlikely to play due to a left ankle sprain. If he becomes the first starting offensive lineman to miss a game due to injury in McVay's tenure, sixth-round pick Jamil Demby is expected to make his first start alongside fellow 2018 draft choices Brian Allen at center and Joe Noteboom at left guard.
Allen and Noteboom will be making their third career starts. Left tackle Andrew Whitworth and right tackle Rob Havenstein haven't been spectacular so far this season, either.

GURLEY GOES
Rams running back Todd Gurley has fond memories of the team's last meeting with the Browns: Gurley scored his first two NFL touchdowns against Cleveland during a 128-yard performance as a rookie in St. Louis in 2015.
Gurley is a quiet ninth in the league this season with 160 yards rushing on 30 attempts. Backup Malcolm Brown has 17 carries as the Rams attempt to lessen the load on Gurley, who leads the NFL in yards rushing since the start of the 2017 season. Gurley has insisted his knee is fine and he's ready for any workload.

Aaron Donald is still limited in practice

Mike Florio,ProFootball Talk on NBC Sports 2 hours 11 minutes ago

There’s currently no reason to think Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald won’t play on Sunday night against the Browns. Still, Donald has a back injury that continues to keep him from fully participating in practice.
Again on Thursday, like on Wednesday, Donald was limited in practice.
Coach Sean McVay told reporters on Wednesday that Donald is feeling better. With three more days to rest and recover, Donald should be good to go.
The situation remains something to watch, not only in the hours before the game but during it. Will he be used more sparingly than usual? Will the injury be aggravated?
Donald briefly left Sunday’s win over the Saints due to the back problem. So something is going on there. Whether it affects him on Sunday night could become a factor in whether he’ll be wreaking his usual havoc on the opposing offense.

Los Angeles Rams intermediate injury report for Week 3 at Cleveland Browns offers concerns for Rams

Lots of attention to be paid to the injury report as we get ready for Sunday Night Football.

By 3k@3k_ Sep 19, 2019, 7:59pm CDT

The Los Angeles Rams are on the road in Week 3 to take on the Cleveland Browns on Sunday Night Football, and we’ve got serious concerns on both sides of the injury report.
Today’s intermediate injury report lays out the issues for the Rams:

Good news to see RB Malcolm Brown a full participant, though that means there’s lingering concern for DL Aaron Donald.
The bigger worries though are toward TE Tyler Higbee and RG Austin Blythe. Neither were able to go today so they’re all but certain to get a game designation tomorrow.
A reminder that a “questionable” designation simply means the team is “uncertain if player will play” while a “doubtful” designation means they are “unlikely to play.” If a player is ruled “out” in the injury report, he won’t play that week. Injuries are required to be reported “with a reasonable degree of specificity in terms that are meaningful to coaches, other club officials, the media, and the public.”

Meanwhile, the Browns’ side is looooooooong:

Browns preparing for 'terrifying' Rams special teams
gettyimages-1067697608.jpg

By: Jake Gould | 11 hours ago

Stan Kroenke and Kevin Demoff’s decision to replace its defensive-minded head coach Jeff Fisher with a then-30-year-old offensive-minded Sean McVay was a sign of a complete change in identity.
But with full permission from the front office to remodel the Fisher-era Rams, McVay decided to keep a couple of things in order.

Among those was McVay’s decision to retain John Fassel as the special teams coordinator – and the move to keep the coach they call “Bones” looks better by the day.
Just ask Cleveland Browns special teams coordinator Mike Priefer, who told members of the media that he began preparing for Rams’ special teams unit back in the spring.

The Browns are also very aware of the danger that electrifying return man JoJo Natson brings to the table for John Fassel and the Rams.

Respect level = 1000.
Fassel’s special teams unit will see a familiar face on the other side of the ball. The Browns currently employ ex-Ram receiver Khadarel Hodge as a gunner on special teams. Priefer is very high on Hodge, who was cut by the Rams and subsequently claimed by the Browns via waivers.
“I can’t believe the Rams let [Hodge] go. He is so talented,” Priefer said. “I am very glad that we have him. For a young guy, he has some leadership abilities and some leadership qualities. He plays very, very hard and he is very intelligent. He understands his role.”

Los Angeles Rams at Cleveland Browns: Five Browns to watch

The next opponent for the LA Rams is a Cleveland Browns team filled with stars on the rise that have a lot of prove on Sunday Night Football.

By Joey The Jerk@LaRamsRamsRams Sep 19, 2019, 8:00am CDT

Cleveland Browns v New York Jets

There used to be a time where the Cleveland Browns only had one dude a casual NFL fan could name: LT Joe Thomas. It was nearly impossible to remember what journeyman QB they were trotting out that week and the rest of the roster had dudes who wanted nowhere near your fantasy team.
Well, things have changed.
When the Los Angeles Rams travel to Cleveland to face the Browns on Sunday Night Football, they will be dealing with a slew of rising superstars that could end up being the biggest challenge in this very young season.

Here are the five Browns to watch:
DE Myles Garrett
Cleveland Browns v New York Jets

When DE Aaron Donald went 14th in the NFL Draft, there was a knock on his size, specifically his height. At 6’1’’, Donald had out-of-this-world skills in a shorter frame. Obviously, Donald has turned this into an advantage, using his leverage to become the best player in the league. However, when you look at the 6’4” Garrett, you can see why NFL teams would want him on their defensive line. Already this season, Garrett has 5 sacks and with a lineup that will be featuring backup OL Jamil Demby, Garrett could be adding more on Sunday night.

QB Baker Mayfield
Cleveland Browns v New York Jets

The linebackers for the LA Rams will be tested with a mobile QB like Mayfield. Maybe if QB Cam Newton was at full strength for week 1 (which he obviously was not), we would know more about how the Rams plan on dealing with a QB such as him. The opposite of QB Jared Goff, Mayfieldplays bold and takes chances. He also holds onto the ball longer than he should. This could be an opportunity for ILB Cory Littleton and S John Johnson III to step up again with some turnovers. And how will OLB Clay Matthews and OLB Dante Fowler Jr. fare against a player like Mayfield? I’m seriously on the edge of seat for this one.

P Jaime Gillan

We seriously don’t talk enough about punters. Before I see a picture of a punter, I always assume that they have a shaved head, but not the case with the long-haired UDFA. This is the type of content you crave, I get it. Anyways, Gillan was just awarded the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Look out for this rookie to change the field position in a nasty way; he pinned the New York Jets within the 20 yard line five times last week. Coach John Fassel’s special teams unit has had an uneven start, so this could be a good test to see what the deal is.

CB Greedy Williams
Cleveland Browns v New York Jets

Williams has enjoyed a blazing start to his career, outplaying all rookies at his position and even stealing some of the defensive back praise that usually lands on CB Denzel Ward’s doorstep. This is a guy that the Browns straight up stole in the second-round of the NFL Draft. If Goff tries to stay away from Ward, then Williams has a chance to make some big plays.

WR Odell Beckham Jr.
Cleveland Browns v New York Jets

Beckham Jr.’s 89-yard touchdown run is pretty much all you need to know about what a problem this guy could be for the LA Rams’ defense. Hot take: he’s an elite pass catcher. However, this touchdown, as fantastic as it is, is his only touchdown in two games.

I’m adding an honorable mention of RB Nick Chubb, who is a high volume rusher that could be a big nuisance for the Rams’ vaunted run defense.
The point of this: the Browns are loaded up with weapons. They’re also very young and prone to mistakes. If the Rams are able to capitalize on this, it just may be the difference in the game.

Rams secondary prepared for Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry

Considering they were the first receiving duo in LSU history to surpass 1,000 yards receiving in a single season – and what they've accomplished since – Browns wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry form one of the most dangerous receiving tandems in the NFL.

Reunited for the first time since their college days, both pose the same threat in Cleveland and present challenges to opposing secondaries – challenges Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is keenly aware of.
"Both of those receivers, with the quarterback that can get them the ball, it's going to be problems for you," Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said. "We got to realize that and play our techniques really well."

Both players entered the league in 2014, and despite diverging paths to the Browns, managed to quickly establish themselves as among the NFL's most skillful at their position.

Landry's 481 receptions from 2014-18 are the most all-time by an NFL player through their first five seasons. He's caught at least two passes in 79 straight games, the second-longest active streak in the NFL behind Antonio Brown's 115.

Beckham, meanwhile, is fourth in the league with an average of 6.6 receptions per game and third with 92.8 perceiving yards per game along with 44 receiving touchdowns. He's surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in four of his first five seasons, missing in 2017 due to an ankle injury that limited him to four games.

Just last Monday night against the Jets, Beckham took a pass from QB Baker Mayfield in stride 89 yards for the touchdown. Beckham was lined up in the slot on that play, which means it is possible Rams CB Nickell Robey-Coleman could match up with him. Landry could also see time in that spot as well.

"You've got to understand that these guys are great players, and they're going to make great catches," Robey-Coleman said. "They're going to do something irregular things that we don't traditionally see in a regular receiver. So knowing that, it helps us be on top of the details a little bit more and fight for four quarters, because those type of guys, it only takes one play for them to go off."

"On top of that, don't try to let them get into an early rhythm. Keep them off rhythm."

Rams CB Aqib Talib was also asked about the play and how that would impact a cornerback defending a receiver.

"You can't change nothing," Talib said. "Just execute, man. Good technique, and executing."

Safety Eric Weddle is the Rams' primary defensive signal-caller and communicator and recognizes it is his job to be paying close attention to where Beckham and Landry are at all times. He also has first-hand experience with Beckham's game-breaking abilities.

Beckham had just two catches for 11 yards and fumbled on the Giants' first offensive play when they were facing Weddle and the Ravens in October 2016, only to finish with eight catches for a career-high 222 yards and two touchdowns.

Between him and Landry, Weddle – like Phillips – is well aware of the challenges they present and the importance of mini-zing their impact on a game.

"We're not going to overcook anything, but we understand those are amazing players," Weddle said. "We want to try to limit them as best as we can."

Rams Pro Football Focus tidbits heading into Week 3

Pro Football Focus (PFF) has a team of more than 300 staffers evaluating every NFL play from the Hall of Fame game to the Super Bowl. After each game, players, as well as each team's offensive, defensive and special teams units, are graded on a scale of 0 to 100; the closer a player or unit is to 100, the better. A full explanation of their evaluation process can be found here for additional context.

Here's a look at some of the noteworthy Rams-centric assessments based on PFF's evaluations through the first two weeks of the season.

GOFF IS SHARP OVER THE MIDDLE, PERFORMING BETTER AGAINST BLITZES

PFF breaks up its passing direction charts in three parts: Outside Left, Between Numbers and Outside Right. Between Numbers, or the middle of the field, is where Rams QB Jared Goff has had the most success.

According to PFF, Goff has completed 25 of 34 passes between the numbers, good for a completion percentage of 73.5. He was 13 of 17 in the same category against the Saints.

Goff also fared better against the blitz in Week 2 with a passing grade of 82.7 in that category compared to 57.7 in Week 1. He was 6 for 6 and gained 120 of his 283 passing yards when New Orleans blitzed last Sunday.

IF HIGBEE IS UNAVAILABLE, EVERETT SHOULD HAVE NO TROUBLE FILLING IN

Head coach Sean McVay said earlier this month that versatility at the tight end position is critical to what the Rams want to do on offense. Tight ends must make plays in the pass game, be able to compete on the line of scrimmage in the run game and do some different things in terms of protection. Tyler Higbee's ability do those things on all three downs is what makes him valuable to that unit, according to McVay.

Higbee, L.A.'s starting tight end, is currently day-to-day with a lung contusion. If he is unable to play against the Rams, Pro Football Focus' recent evaluations suggest Gerald Everett will be able to seamlessly take his place.

Everett graded out as the Rams' second-best pass-blocker and run-blocker against the Saints. He also posted the second-highest offensive grade out of the eight L.A. receivers targeted by Goff.

RAPP LIVING UP TO REPUTATION AS A RELIABLE TACKLER

Leading into the season-opener at Carolina, L.A. defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said safety Taylor Rapp is proving to be exactly the player the club thought he was when they chose him in the second round in this year's draft, praising his short-area quickness and tackling ability.

Both have been on display through the first two weeks of the season.

Rapp posted the fifth-best tackling grade of any Rams defensive player in Week 1, then followed it up with the third-highest mark in Week 2. He's also had the fourth-best coverage grade in each of Los Angeles' first two games.

The Rams are deep in the secondary, but Rapp's consistency should keep earning him chances to see the field.

man i want the rams dbs to pummel that obj cocksucker. i'll never forget what a jerkoff he was in his rookie season against the rams. i might be expecting too much from peters and talib as they don't have pummeling capabilities. weddle, johnson and rapp need to hit that jerk.

I don’t know what to think of the Browns, but I do believe they are better than they’ve shown so far. I assume there is still some jelling to do.

Let’s keep that on hold for another week (y)

More I look at the Browns on tape the more I feel like they're a sloppy and undisciplined bunch. Mentally they crumbled vs the Titans, with everything from dumb mistakes to tons of idiotic penalties. Admittedly I don't know the roster well, but I would bet there's a lot of quitters on it collecting checks.

And I hate to write this stuff because this league has taught me not to overlook any team. But that said...

Looking at them objectively their tackles are not good. Rams are loaded at OLB and should win a ton of matchups on the edge even with their depth. Fowler vs GRob are you kiddin me??? GRob is such a piece of crap he'll probably fake an injury by the half to get out of there. Hubbard will get eaten by Brock or Matthews, I think he's gonna be abused in this game.

On the interior many of us liked Bitonio coming out and he's a quality guy who has played well, and I always liked Kush as a guy who leaves it all on the field, but those guys are also gonna lose a lot of matchups to Donald and company. Their hope right now has to be that Donald is held out for precautionary measures.

Their secondary vs our wideouts is an enormous mismatch in our favor, not to mention so many of them with "hamstrings" or whatever other injuries they have going on right now.

Defensively their only good matchups are on the DL. Which have potential to level the playing field if the Rams don't solve them. Garrett is rolling and facing a guy in Whit who is really good but not elite IMO. I think that one's manageable by the way but gotta give the Browns cred there. Richardson is their best matchup if Demby's playing, I'd even like that matchup for the Browns if Blythe was in there but if it's Demby good Lord.

But outside of a very small window of matchups there are a ton that favor the Rams. On offense they have two guys who are plus matchups in OBJ and Mayfield. OBJ I give the edge vs all our corners, Rams will need to focus him and be careful when they single him up. Mayfield is a wildcard, I have always loved his game and his leadership especially and he is going to make some wow plays with that arm of his but he's also facing the best secondary he's gonna see for a while with Weddle mixing things up.

Translation for myself: if this game is anything other than a blowout of the Browns the Rams only have themselves to blame. And I'll start thinking maybe there's something to this "Super Bowl Hangover" thing.

BEREA, Ohio— The Cleveland Browns could be without their entire starting secondary Sunday against the defending NFC champion Los Angeles Rams.

Safety Damarious Randall (concussion) has been ruled out by coach Freddie Kitchens. Safety Morgan Burnett (quadriceps) and cornerbacks Denzel Ward (hamstring) and Greedy Williams (hamstring) are questionable.

The starting CBs suffered hamstring injuries in practice. I heard from another article they won't be able to go. Goff may throw 5 TD passes in this game. Yeah this has Rams win written all over it, but then again Donald needs to be himself in this game and needs a quick back recovery or it could be a shootout.
