My thought is that he has a window here for the next couple years to push for a ring based on a large part due to the defense he coaches. Another year or two fielding a top five defense that is a superbowl contender opens more doors. It allows him to be choosey on which team he wants to lead. If he leaves after this season he would be taking what he can get.

If he was leaving this year where would he end up? Certainly not the jets. Horrible franchise. The lions? Another perennial loser. Maybe the bears. Or the chargers if that became an option.

Keeps him in the area if that's important to him and there are some good pieces on defense

I have said it before. Our owner is crazy rich, no salary cap on coaches. Give McVay a fat raise and 10 year deal and then give our DC head coach money, a tad under McVay and keep them together for 20 years.

You like dynasty's ? I REALLY like dynasty's.

I doubt Staley will be content being a career DC. He's going to want his own team.

.

Best case scenario is Staley stays for one more year.

Worst case scenario is Staley leaves after this season.

There's not much difference.

Let's hope the Rams d wins them a superbowl before he leaves.

Only way we can hold onto a good/great DC is if we hire a DC who was a HC but got fired. Even then, there's a chance that person gets another chance as a retread. Regardless, if McVay brings in any up-and-coming DC and that person does well, he'll get hired as a HC sooner or later. Basically, our potential options this off-season (if Staley goes) if we want a long-term DC would be Matt Patricia, Vic Fangio (if he's fired), Dan Quinn, Jim Schwartz (if Pederson's staff goes), Gus Bradley, Gregg Williams, or Chuck Pagano (if Nagy's staff goes). And frankly, Quinn or Pagano could potentially get another HC shot soonish.

Unsurprisingly, I want no part of Schwartz, Bradley, or Gregg Williams. I would be ecstatic to land Vic Fangio. I'm on the fence about Quinn. He was great as a DC at UF and in Seattle, but he did an awful job at the end of his tenure in Atlanta (might have been taking on too much as a HC). Pagano would be an above average DC, but he's more on Wade's level than Staley's. Patricia is intriguing. I don't know how to feel about him.

He has the opportunity to run a defense that could be talked about for decades. We have the Dlinemen and corner in the league.

He’s only 38 years old. Why rush to go coach some terrible New York team?

One potentially positive way of looking at the turnover of bright young coaches coming through the Rams orbit is it keeps a pipeline of fresh perspectives and innovative ideas pouring in. McVay and his other assistants get to soak up whatever they can learn from them.
Ultimately he is the one that matters most. Staley has been a revelation but in reality this is McVays defense now. When he hired Brandon out of relative obscurity, he declared his vision for what kind of defense he wants the Rams to have.

It sucks to lose coordinators every year. But the real genius is McVay. He let Wade walk because he wanted to be more hands on with the defense this year. He's one the smartest offensive minds. So it stands to reason if he knows how to attack a defense he would know how a defense should attack an offense.

I'm not worried as long as McVay stays. And he's reached the pinnacle of his profession. A head coach in the NFL. In what is at least the second most attractive market. He's not going anywhere. His life is as a good as it gets for him.

Imo Staley is a uniquely gifted and brilliant defensive coach. Darious Williams has it exactly right, he's a genius at what he does, just as much or more so than McVay may be. I doubt he will be easily replaced if he leaves.

Though the D certainly has identifiable principles I doubt very much that it's just a mechanical scheme that someone else can run as well. There are too many facets that come from Staley on an ongoing basis: studying every team's strengths and taking them away, recognizing his own players' skills and blending them together, not just in a game plan but constantly in real time adjustments and formation calls.

You can't separate the results from Staley, and I'm not sure anyone else will be able to duplicate them.

To follow up on this post, if McVay decides to go the same route he did with Staley, I'll throw out a few names that jump out to me as sharing similarities with Staley:
Steve Russ LB Coach Redskins (DC for Air Force before joining Ron Rivera in Carolina)
Michael Hodges LB Coach Saints (DC at Eastern Illinois before joining the Saints)
Ryan Nielsen DL Coach Saints (DC for N.C. State and Northern Illinois before joining the Saints)
Bobby Babich DB Coach Bills (PGC for FIU before joining the Bills)
Chris Hewitt PGC Ravens
Jesse Minter DB Coach Ravens (DC at Georgia State and Indiana State before joining the Ravens)
DeMarcus Covington DL Coach Patriots (DC at Eastern Illinois before joining the Patriots)

Why those guys? All but Hewitt served as coordinators at the college level before becoming NFL assistants to impressive defensive minds. Hewitt is currently passing game coordinator for a good defense and is one of the NFL's best DB Coaches. But I truly have no idea what McVay will do if Staley leaves. Those were just names who jumped out as having prior college coordinator experience like Staley.

This is Staley’s 4yr in the NFL as coach, 1st as an NFL DC, with 7yrs of college DC experience.

McVay had 6yrs in the NFL as coach, 3 of those as OC.

What we don’t know about Staley is his leadership, and can that carry over to the HC level. So many guys (Pat Patricia and others) can’t seem to make that leap.

Saleh in SF is another guy... looks like a damn fine DC, but HC? Dunno.

That's the thing fans dont see. What happens in the interview? McVay allegedly blew everyone away with his detail, concept for building team. Mike Tomlin didnt have the resume either, but he blew the Steelers away and they hired him. Its rumored that Bienemy hasnt been good in interviews, he's sure got the resume. So Staley? Well, again, who knows how he'll do but I imagine if a team feels he has a plan and ability to field a good coaching staff he'll get hired.
