Rams' Baker Mayfield: 'I'm A Starting QB!' Which Teams Agree?

If Derek Carr rides to New York, the New Orleans Saints could reportedly look to the west to fill in their vacant franchise quarterback spot.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer listed Los Angeles Rams thrower Baker Mayfield as a name for Saints observers to keep an eye on in free agency as the team continues to work its way through the post-Drew Brees era. While the Saints have been linked to Carr, the former Las Vegas Raider who's visiting the New York Jets this weekend, their relative past with Mayfield could help them find some stability under center after working through the first Brees-free season with Andy Dalton and the injured Jameis Winston.

Another quarterback to watch in free agency for New Orleans would be Baker Mayfield," Breer claims. "The Saints staff was high on Mayfield ahead of the 2018 draft, and those old draft evals can definitely have an impact down the road with guys as they get older and hit free agency, especially when there’s a need that can be tied to it."

At season's end, Mayfield said of his time with the Rams, “This place has been unbelievable for me. I think I’m going to look back and be really, really grateful for ... the things I learned.”

But he also made a declaration.

“I know I’m a starting quarterback,” he said. “I’m confident in that, and we’ll just see what happens.”

Mayfield is seeking an aerial redemption after his time as the Cleveland Browns' primary passer came to an unceremonious end. He began the year with the Carolina Panthers but found a quantum of salvation with the Rams, who picked him up off waivers in December. Though Mayfield went 1-3 as a starter, he made national headlines for his substitute performance in a nationally-streamed victory over the Las Vegas Raiders mere hours after he was officially added to the Rams' roster.

With Matthew Stafford set to return to Los Angeles' passing domain this season, any desires Mayfield has at another starting opportunity would have to come elsewhere. In January, Mayfield claimed that he would not "chase a check" when it came to his looming free agency.

Baker needs to stay here and sit behind Staff for a bit, learn the system and eventually play for a coach that knows how to use him.

Yeah - ok.

The Rams did well getting such a competitive pick for Free basically.

He basically went 3-2 as a starter here if not for the refs handing the last game to the peacocks, and counting the raiders game as a start. I'd love to keep him, but there just aren't enough starting QBs to go around.

I'd love to keep him on a one year deal, let Stafford run the show and then potentially give him a 2-3 year deal after Stafford retires.

He's gone he values himself as a starter and why not he is in his prime he will not break the bank for a team who wants a tier 2 starter. Especially when you factor in how many teams need a QB. I count 14 and it could be higher depending what NE and Giants do. There are only 4 first rounders, Jimmy G, Carr, Tannehill maybe Lamar/Rodgers, then who else Jones maybe there will be 5+ teams eyeing Baker.

If I was his agent I would never want my client sitting behind Stafford he doesn't need any teaching and he is better than a 2nd stringer.

I'd be fine with him as a backup. But after watching his inaccuracy the last game I'm not sure about him being an eventual starter. The knock on him is his inconsistency. I saw enough of that in his few games with us to rather look elsewhere if we need a starter after Stafford.

I personally think he did pretty good with us given the circumstances he was in with his limited time here and the offensive issues. I also like that he spread the ball more than Staff has since being here.

I am at peace with letting him go. I understand that he wants to start and that's not happening here, except for injury. He did right by us and for that, I appreciate him.

This idea that he'd be better off on the bench for the Rams is jut silly fan delusion. He'd only benefit if he stayed, and played. He rides pine for a year and hits the FA market his value is less as there will be more FA QB's added to the list next off season as well.
He was fun to watch, gave us a legit backup for the first time in forever, but is gone now.

He will leave. Get Mike White to be the back up and draft another QB.
So much love for Mike White, so much love. I agree that White would be a viable backup QB along with drafting a more athletic QB that can use his legs like Jaren Hall or Clayton Tune.

As to Baker, seems that Washington would be a good landing spot as we can see what Eric Bieniemy can do, when he's actually calling plays.

Would like to have him back but wouldn't mind a comp pick next year which I think we could get.

Have to laugh at the inconsistency remarks playing behind an Oline and throwing to WRs that shouldn’t be starting in Canada let alone the NFL with no camp starting after what one or two practices.

He would be a luxury to keep behind Stafford on a team that has far too many other holes to fill.

Fix the fucking Oline and Stafford’s health isn’t an issue.

I wouldn't call it fan delusion. Imo, fan delusion would be that we fix the oline in one off-season and we ride with Stafford for 4-5 more years. Facts are, the oline NEEDS to be fixed in order to keep Staff playing, but since nothing is guaranteed, putting all our chips in on fixing the oline to protect a very banged up veteran qb in one off-season with little draft capital and even less cap...if I'm Bakers agent, I would have a serious discussion with McVay and Les and ask if they want Baker to take over for Staff at some point in the near future. This team is his best opportunity for his future, IMO.

I know Stafford is older, and gets dinged like every othe QB, but I don't think he was THAT hurt last year, - I believe McVay took a look at the Oline, and just shut him down.

As has been said multiple times, fix the Oline and/or suffer less injuries, and Staff's good for at least another 3 years.
Which is by way of saying I am not interested at all in Mayfield - think he's a good guy, and a bit of a lightning rod for the press (sometimes deserved). but he showed the same inconsistencies he's always shown, and he ain't backing up for less tha $8-10M imo, which can be better spent elsewhere.
