Is it possible they may be looking to trade Ramsey? Maybe they figure Slay wouldn’t weaken the secondary much while saving money(Ramsey’s big contract due) and recoup draft capital?

Maybe the new DC prefers Slay over Ramsey. Or the contract extension for Ramsey is not going well. No chance they can afford both. Rams have made a lot of surprising moves, sure will not dismiss this.

I like Slay but, he is getting up there in age. They talked about him wanting a big-time deal on ESPN radio recently. They said they think he wants the money a He will not be worth it. If the Rams could get him for a 4th rounder he could be worth it for a year 25-year old D Slay is worth. I fourth-round pick for a one-year rental could be worth it if the Rams are all in. Where the money comes from is a big question.

Why?

The acquiring of an aging veteran CB would be one of the last things on my list to acquire this upcoming free agency. If the Rams are looking for some aging graybeards lets hope it's in the OL not the secondary.

The top priority is signing CB Ramsey to a very long term contract. Rams will also end up paying 29 yr old CB Troy Hill over $6 million when they add in all the incentives & bonus's. Rams also have 29 yr old veteran Nickell Robey-Coleman who will earn close to $5 million this upcoming season.

Snead also has two young & promising corners in Darious Williams who started some games last season & last yrs 3rd rd draft selection David Long in reserve. The Rams CB unit might be already one of the best in the NFL.

While I don't think there is any substance to this rumor I would like to remind all that we play in the run-dominant NFC West. We all know that the Whiners and Squawks are running the ball as soon as they get off the bus. And the Cards with Johnson and Drake are no slouches either.
As a result having two shutdown corners is not as important as stopping the run.

To this end we need to grab back control of the line of scrimmage and that is accomplished by acquiring some big uglies up front along with some fast and lethal linebackers.

Slay is a good player and probably worth a lot to another team; just not the Rams at this point in time.

Great post, which is the exact reasons I didn’t like the trade for Ramsey in the first place. Plenty of great talent at 20 this year without even the possibility of trading up and acquiring another high pick.

  • No mention of Slay to Rams here.

  • DARIUS SLAYDB, DETROIT LIONS

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Lions have spoken to "multiple teams" about a potential trade for CB Darius Slay.
Detroit previously shopped Slay during October's trade deadline but was on record of seeking compensation similar to what the Rams gave up for CB Jalen Ramsey (two first-round picks and a subsequent fourth). The 29-year-old All-Pro has since made his contract demands known, looking to reset the market and eclipse Xavien Howard's position-high $15.1 million annually in 2020. The Eagles and Broncos were both in on Slay at the deadline despite Detroit's outlandish request, making it more than feasible a deal is eventually completed if either agree to Slay's raise upon landing him. Look for the Lions to address that position with the No. 3 overall pick in April's draft.

This would make no sense at all. Signing a guy at the back end of his career? The Rams did this to buy time to develop their draft. They have David Long to play opposite Ramsey. He's got speed, decent length and his game is man coverage. He's had a redshirt year to learn and he played well in limited snaps last season. They already have decent depth at CB.

They have only one real priority signing and that is Fowler. As I outlined in another thread it wouldn't surprise me if they allow Littleton to walk. He's too limited to pay big bucks to and with Young, Kiser and the emergence of Reeder there isn't a need for him if they play the scheme I think they will. Don't forget Howard who flashed a bit in limited snaps. This will give them 4 ILB who run a 4.6 which is fast for a LB. Howard had 3 PDEF last year showing some coverage ability.

People should seriously breakdown the roster and see there is legit depth at several positions. Why do people keep wanting to trade a franchise RB? The problem wasn't Gurley it was the coaching and the o-line. The acquisition of Thomas Brown as RB coach IMO is a huge upgrade and is a real under the radar type of improvement. Kromer is going to get the accolades but believe me, any improvement in the ability of the RB's to correctly read the blocking will all be Brown's doing. Too many times the RBs simply read the blocks wrong or simply didn't know what to do if the play broke down.
