Jalen Ramsey was the headliner from the Los Angeles Rams’ three trades last week, but they also acquired two other players who could contribute as early as this season. The first was offensive lineman Austin Corbett, the No. 33 overall pick in the 2018 draft.
The Browns gave up on the second-year player by sending him to the Rams for a 2021 fifth-round pick, which is a small price to pay for a player with that sort of draft pedigree.
And then there’s linebacker Kenny Young, who was part of the package for Marcus Peters. He was a starter for the Ravens earlier this season but was benched for two games due to poor play. A fourth-round pick out of UCLA, the Rams are familiar with his game.
Yet, as talented as these two players might be, Los Angeles is going to take it slow with both. They were both inactive on Sunday against the Falcons as they try to get up to speed at their respective positions.
Sean McVay said Wednesday that Corbett and Young are making progress, but with limited practice time, there’s only so much evaluating the Rams can do.
“They’re coming along. It’s a little bit more difficult when you just look at the way that we’ve had to practice right now. It’s hard to truly evaluate them from a physical standpoint,” McVay said. “This will really represent the first opportunity since last week that we are able to physically get guys out there, do some work where they seem like they’re picking things up mentally. But, there’s been so much going on in a short period of time. I think that’s going to be a process that we’re going to be patient with.”
Young has a clearer path to playing time than Corbett right now. Troy Reeder has supplanted Bryce Hager as the starter next to Cory Littleton, but his play hasn’t been all that great, either. If Young progresses enough, he could become a starter by season’s end.
On the interior of the offensive line, Brian Allen is the starting center and David Edwards has replaced the injured Joe Noteboom at left guard. Edwards played well in his first start, but Allen continues to struggle, as does Austin Blythe.
The Rams probably won’t replace any of the three right now, but Corbett is a starting-caliber player who could rise the depth chart as the season goes on.
