CB - we could have signed a decent CB for $10M - $12M instead.

I believe the Rams knew it after the season was over that our secondary situation caused us to miss the Superbowl so they went out and got both McDuffie and Watson.
Deciphering Les's conversation today it sounds like Watson was the target and during the process the opportunity to get McDuffie developed.
He was about as clear as he ever is saying that is were we needed to imptove there most. He also intimated that 4 TE's was not enough, once one goes down like happened last year you are an injury away from not being able to fully utilize 13.

It's definite speculation that we could have signed any CB.

$10M CB is the cost for an average CB, not a special one.

It's speculative that an average CB would have helped much.

They traded for McCreary at the deadline. That didn't move the needle.

I agree that they went out and got McDuffie and Watson to improve the secondary. Both of those players are above average. They spent approx. $45mil. per year to do that. That's much more than $10mil to fix the problem.
Yeah but any CB would have been better than Tutu

That's very well possible if that player panned out and didn't get injured.

But not necessarily a given.

BTW, that free agency class wasn't very strong (I think the highest paid free agent DB Adebo struggled). And then said player would have to agree to play for LA and pay those California taxes.

So many unknowns. But the assumption is always the Rams can always get whatever they desire.
Dammit - we are the Rams - everyone wants to come play for us

Around $5mil would have got us Mike Jackson but to be fair to Tutu he got open a lot they just never incorporated him - which I put down to his size

For the "Sean didn't like the pick" crew (if there are any left), former Rams OC Mike Lafleur vouches for Sean McVay’s fondness for Ty Simpson during last season.

I definitely would have rather signed Mike Jackson than Tutu.

Actually no. I was curious so I just checked.

Jackson agreed to terms with the Panthers two days before free agency even started last year.

And apparently, he never wanted to leave.

"I told him no matter what, like bro, they offer me something, I'm coming back like you ain't even got to worry about it," Jackson said. "So we kind of already had that discussion before the season ended."

Well damn.

I think part of where I'm coming down on this whole Simpson at 13 pick is that in the aggregate, taking a QB of his attributes at 13 in a draft makes me queasy. But absent a trade partner and the fact that I considered the draft so weak as it was, I really didn't love any of the guys there at 13 anyways. So in THIS draft, with THIS QB and the ALTERNATIVE picks. I can get behind it.

I feel the same way btw about ARI and Love. Love in any other draft would have been a horrible pick given the opportunity cost.

In this draft, I think it's defensible.

2013 ass draft.

Ty Simpson: Had secret meeting with Rams' McVay before draft

LOS ANGELES -- The Rams wanted to keep their interest in Ty Simpson close to the vest before the NFL draft, so the Alabama quarterback kept his meeting with coach Sean McVay "private," he said Monday in an interview with Ian Fitzsimmons on ESPN Radio's "Amber & Ian."

The Rams drafted Simpson, Matthew Stafford's likely successor, with the 13th pick Thursday night.

"We tried to keep this under wraps as long as we could," Simpson said in Monday's interview. "It was something to where I knew they were interested, but they wanted to make it private and didn't want people to know that they were interested.

"So, I had some secret meetings with Coach McVay, and I just was trying to be on script and do what everybody told me and not to tell anybody."

After he was drafted, Simpson downplayed his predraft interactions with the Rams.

"It was really brief, to be honest with you," he said Thursday night. "I met with some scouts in Alabama, and that was really it. They talked to my agent, but that really wasn't much."

In reality, Simpson said Monday, he and McVay had one meeting before the draft and "talked for hours and hours."

"And it was just football," Simpson said. "It was just straight football. And it was like a kid in a candy store. Me and him are sitting there, and we're just going back and forth. You can tell the obsession he has for the game, and you can tell the love he has for quarterback play.

"It's something that I appreciate, and it's something that I enjoy because I really enjoy playing the position and value the position. So, being with him and then getting to know him and then just seeing a little bit of how I would get coached if I was fortunate enough to go there was something that I couldn't have asked for a better situation."

Though McVay said he "couldn't be more excited about being able to add [Simpson]" to the roster, he wanted to make it clear that Stafford will be the Rams' quarterback for as long as he wants to play.

"Whenever that time comes for [Simpson] to get an opportunity to be Matthew's successor will be on Matthew's terms," McVay said Saturday night.
Seems like Simpson really wanted to be a Ram. He could have been picked earlier had he not kept the secret.

The whole League (and a substantial portion of Ram fans) are freakin TF out because they dont like the player or pick. This pick will prove to be a "master stroke" by Les, in time. Bet the Steelers wish they'd drafted Ben's replacement while Ben had 2 years left. They're STILL chasin it.

The Green Bay model has proven to work if the right player is selected, and in my opinion we got the right guy.
Yet GB with Love has yet to win or even sniff a Superbowl. Time will tell if the Rams made the right move.

While that's true they ARE a perennial playoff team. I don't love Love (LOL) all that much but at least they solved Quarterback, way better than Pittsburgh has since Ben. The original Green Bay example, drafting Rodgers while having Favre is the superior one that DID win them a Super Bowl.

But....why? Shouldn't we all just be rooting for whomever is wearing the Rams uniform?? I can promise ya'll that I won't remember who liked or didn't like the pick in 3 weeks much less 3 years....
I think the concept of eating crow in Tano's case is admitting you were wrong once we actually know what Simpson is. I would fully admit that if Simpson does well I commend him and was wrong because I didn't think he could do it. I'm not going to change up and be like, oh dude is great when I'm on record saying I think his ceiling is that of a career backup. That's fake admiration. Regardless of my thoughts, I'll be rooting for him to be successful anytime I see him in a Rams uniform playing because well its the Rams. Now if he doesn't do well, Tano's basically saying those that praised him should simply admit they were wrong. Don't worry, I'll remind y'all if you are but best believe its going to be in a way where I'm more so upset for us as Rams fans because I want to always see this team succeed.

And there is the million, or is it billion thanks to inflation, dollar question that we won't know for quite some time. Will we just contend with Simpson, will he develop into a bonafide star leading us to the promise land, will he stink? Rams are taking a calculated risk for sure so TBD.
