The comments on the Rams socials responding to their "buy your Ty Simpson jersey here" are brutal.
He has an NFL arm I think and there are some things to like for sure, but, its spot he's drafted that bothers me. He also has physical size worries I suppose.
I think the Rams probably wanted to trade down but couldn't find a deal they liked. A lot of trading down and teams not having to give up a ton to move up.
So, drafted a back up (for hopefully a few years) in a supposed "all in" year is strange. Leaving impact players on the board at 13 to draft a guy who likely would have been available later (Cards probably would have drafted him) is what makes this pick sting to me.
I kept waiting for the Rams to move back up to land Cooper Jr toward the end of the first round.
The Jets ended up with two players I love and Rams ended up with one I don't like.
That said, my opinion is worth next to nothing, ha.
Weird pick to me. It seems a bit arrogant.
But, if the Rams win the Super Bowl or go deep in the playoffs.....certainly the expectation....the Rams are landing one of the QBs in next years first round anyway. So, in that sense, it can make sense if they like Simpson as an eventual starter.
I will be coping for a bit....

My guess is that has more to do with Stafford than anything else. If McVay didn't want Simpson we would not have taken Simpson.
This is wrong. Anyone that thinks McVay has the final say over Snead doesn’t know how this works.

Hell, watch the draft footage from previous years. It’s on YouTube. You can watch McVay and Snead interact in the war room. It is CRYSTAL CLEAR who is in charge and making the final decision. And it’s not McVay.

Look, I'm just pointing out the flaw of "trust McVay " stuff.
I mean, yeah, most of us trust him to a point, but on a message board we're gonna say what we want to say.

I don't really have anything against Simpson aside from his lack of college experience.

And like most of us, I was more geeked up over the possibility of the Rams drafting someone we could see play a bit this year.
Hey, I didn't expect anyone the Rams drafted to make much of an impact this year anyway...just get some snaps to get the feet wet.

A terrible run-game for Bama, sure, (even though Jam Miller will likely be a UDFA pickup), but I refuse to say that they had "terrible receivers"; not with Germie Bernard or Ryan Coleman-Williams (who will likely be a top-fifteen-pick next year if he rebounds and does what he did his freshman year). Isaiah Horton and Lotzeir Brooks looked good as well.

And Proctor just got selected with #12 overall. Parker Brailsford (center) and Jaedan Roberts (guard) will both likely be drafted. They may not have had the big-time O-line they've had in the past, but they weren't terrible. Had they all been terrible, there's no way they would've made the College Football Playoffs.

Simpson had less than Mendoza, but let's not say he had nothing.
Fair enough. Admittedly I don't watch much college ball or do much scouting. I was going by Dan Orlovsky's analysis, who certainly implied that Simpson had a poor supporting cast at Alabama. The number of drops by the Bama receivers was crazy.

Not how I saw those videos at all.

This honestly feels worse than losing to Seattle in the NFC championship game.
At least there we lost to the slightly better team overall.

This is like seeing our SB window nailed shut for the next 5 years.

It would be one thing if this guy looked like a future franchise QB.
But he doesn't even look like he can play.

I won't even bother watching the draft the next few days after this.
Absolutely sickening.
The first 3 paragraphs here are absolute Dogshit. The 4th one, have at it, champ.

Lemon was never a McVay player. You can tell by hearing him speak.

A 6th OL doesn't play. A 3rd WR would be part time. Sadiq would be part time.

So the whole "he won't see the field" argument is weak. And we obviously won't even sign Jimmy now, so Simpson becomes insurance at the most important position.

Others have said it - the single biggest aspect of this is McVay chose his future QB

Those receivers you mentioned dropped a LOT of passes. R.Williams alone had 13, which lead all FBS Wr's at a 18.9% rate! Their receivers accounted for 30 drops on the season. That probably is top 10 worst in the FBS as well. That line may have some draft picks on it, but they were not good as a unit last year. I cannot recall a worse set of RB's with Bama either, they usually have studs back there.

All of this and he was leading for heisman and #1 pick in the draft before an injury, which he played through.

There is reason for optimism.

Did I want a immediate weapon in the 1st? Absolutely. This just might work out much better however.

McVay said Stafford is our guy. What the fuck Snead
Simpson would not have been our pick if McVay wasn't on board. It's that simple.
Very true and thats easy to forget......but, that doesn't change Simpson at 13 is viewed as a reach.
5 years from now people may be saying they cant believe 12 teams passed on him.....or, he could be a punchline.
End of the day, Simpson is a QB. If he pans out, he's easily worth the pick. If he doesn't, he wouldn't have been worth a second round pick.

13. Rams: Ty Simpson, QB, Alabama

Grade: A

Simpson showed high-end ability last season before injuries started piling up. He understands how to attack tight windows and play with the anticipation necessary to translate to the NFL. I also think he gets underrated physically as he's got very light feet in the pocket and an NFL-caliber arm. The Rams don't plan on picking this high until Matthew Stafford retires, and now they have their transition plan.
