Funny you should say that. For those that don't like the media attention the Rams are getting as the SB favorite, don't watch FTF. On first things first, Greg Jennings, Danny Parkins and Jeff Schwartz were raving about Simpson.

Jenning said, "he proved that he can learn and he can execute. No credit away from Simpson but a lot of the credit goes to McVay. When a player steps to the podium and says, 'this is the most comfortable I've ever felt in a game', that tells me they made him comfortable. They leaned into who is he is and his skillset, not how we want him to fit into our system. You want to put him in a good position so he showed well and he did"

Swartz said, "I know some people want to give him a bust in Canton but preseason is about do the players check the box or is it a red flag. #13 player over all, Simpson checked the box. Did he look like the #13 pick overall? Yes he did. Check the box."

Parkins said, "I wouldn't want to be Stetson Bennett"
Swartz, "oh he's out. He's out"
Parkins says, "then that's not nothing. That's a little bit more than a checkmark. Can that guy execute McVays offense? He looks like he could"
Jennings said, "the Rams wanted to prepare Simpson and they did. The Rams wanted to check the box on Simpson at #13 and they looked and said, 'yeah we made the right choice'. To the Stetson Bennett point, he's a non factor"
Parkins, "you think Simpson's the backup?"
Jennings, "yeah he's the backup"
Swartz, "they drafted him to be the backup, he looked like the backup, he did a great job"
Parkins, "well that's not nothing then. That is more value than I thought Simpson was going to provide on draft day".

Me? I don't want to over react so I won't. He looked good, Bennett really didn't. There's more games and hopefully BOTH of them play. We'll see more going forward.

I think these guys are talking out of school when they declare Simpson the backup over Bennett as of right now. That's just emotion and television talking. The plan remains, as of now at least, as Bennett QB2, Simpson 3.
Can it change? Of course it can. Plan can remain also.

How does (Simpson) do when teams gameplan to confuse him?
This is one of the main reasons I'm optimistic about Simpson.

He's a coach's son -- he got great football tutoring his whole life. Had a great coach at Alabama with Saban too.

All reports are that Simpson is a football junkie and a perfectionist who is obsessed with football and loves the cerebral part of the game.

Simpson says he had "several secret meetings" with McVay pre-draft and they talked about football strategy for "hours and hours." Most importantly, Simpson described these meetings as being like "a kid in a candy store." Simpson loves watching film.

McVay knows what he wants in the brains department from his QB. Goff was a mediocre fit with McVay, while Stafford is a GREAT fit.

When I see McVay talk about Simpson, it seems obvious that McVay loves the cerebral part of his game.

When teams gameplan to confuse him, I'm confident that Ty's football IQ will bring him success.

The funny. He was asked about AD and Garrett and he said he never went against Garrett because he was a left side rusher. But he did get scared the last time they played Cleveland. To start the second half Garrett was lined up on his side and Hav says, "what are you doing? You don't belong over here." But it was only 1 series.
Garrett should have said, "Because, just like Donald, I like picking on the opponent's worst pass blocker."

Of course they are, they're national media. But as fans, isn't it nice to hear them giving kudos to the kid? It beats the alternative. Especially after Bennett looked mediocre vs the twos. I'm sure if Bennett is tearing it up in practice and in joint practices, Simpson will be the #3. Even if Bennett doesn't tear it up, they could always call on JG. It's just nice to hear some positives from the national media on Simpson.

Big Rob admitted, I'm not gifted athletically so I had to rely on knowing where they wanted to go and trying to beat them there. Hav had his bad moments but over an 11 year career he did pretty good. We didn't need to look for a RT in that decade plus. And I'd agree with him, he wasn't athletically gifted so he did hold a job for 11 years on brains. Humble guy too.

Anybody want to be brought back down to earth, listen to Simms talk about Simpson. Not that he's right or wrong but I wonder where he came down on the pick when it happened. That certainly may color his commentary. He said, "Simpson didn't give me any WOW moments whereas Mendoza and Allar both did".

The consensus is that Simpson played better than Bennett. It's only one preseason game that showed Simpson's potential. We have to see how McVay will play them in the next game and the upcoming scrimmage. I think he needs to give Bennett more snaps in the preseason game to have a bigger sample size. There could be more in the scrimmage, which we don't get to see. Bennett needs more than two series.

Sure sounds like McVay is saying he wants to see how joint practice and this week goes before making a decision on who plays and how reps are split for the next preseason game.

That actually makes me higher on the kid. Simms is a certified Ram hater.

I did not count everyone who did not dressed. I just counted starters and top-reserves (in my opinion).

So, that 37 did NOT include players like Ronnie Rivers or AJ Arcuri ... or even Justin Dedich.

Do you know the total number of those who did not dress?

No. I just looked at the depth chart and did some quick math ... starters and top-reserves

1 QB, 2 RBs, 4 WRs, 4 TEs, 6 OL (did Not include Dedich or Arcuri), 5 DL (including Donald), 3 Edge, 4 LBs (did Not include Neal) and 8 DBs.

That's 37.

In his draft, he was near the top of my draft wish-list for the Rams. He was a great draft pick even though when we switched from Fisher to McVay, Hav ended up playing much of his career in a scheme that didn't suit him that great. Really smart lineman, one of my favorite Rams over the last 20 years. Underrated and underappreciated player.

Simpson was fine. I didn't think there was anything overly great or bad about his performance, just a confirmation of everything he showed at Alabama. Normal preseason game. Almost no pass rush pressure, so comfortable most of game.

1. Good ball velocity. Some accuracy issues, but I'm not too worried about that right now. What I liked best is just how he was calm and in control, his body language. Even when the snaps were high and the play got messed up, he didn't panic and do silly things.

2. I thought his best play was the very last throw, for the TD on the angle route. I did think he was a tick late with the throw. Pre-snap he should know he's coming back to this route, so you don't really need to read the defender. As soon as you turn your helmet back from the right side of the field, you should be starting the wind up and only stopping of something strange happens like the RB slipping and falling. QB takes a small hitch, which risks the passing window getting squeezed by the LB in the middle.

3. It is small potatoes, because Simpson has much more important things to work on learning the playbook, but one thing he needs to do better is sell the play action fake to the RB. His helmet and how he holds and pulls the football faking the handoff isn't deceptive enough and doesn't hold the defenders, which impacts how much separation there will be for the routes and how much YAC can be gained after the catch. In a WC system, small details like that are important. Watch tape on yourself to see what it looks like from the POV of the defense or study QBs like Peyton Manning to see how it is done.

I was thinking something similar. Brady trying to stay relevant. But really, that was pretty cool for the kid. Now put it back in the box, slide into the closet and get on with working to become a better QB.
I kept my playboys in a box in my closet. I found 9-10 mags in a trash dumpster once when I was looking for bottles to get their deposit. I smuggled them in my house and kept them in a box that some old boots came in and slid it in the back of the closet. I was 12 and in heaven.
