It's really hard/unfair to compare because of the shit situation Mendoza is in..
That being said... I love what Simpson has shown. Very happy to have him on this roster moving forward.
It’s really not though. Mendoza was the first overall pick. Simpson was panned as a huge reach.
Simpson has largely been playing with players that have very little chance of making the Rams team and often against players that WILL make their teams’ rosters.
Simpson won’t likely see any action this season while Mendoza is likely to. That’s where a comparison would be unfair.
Right now, however, the two are decent comparables. And I don’t care who you are, that TD throw by Simpson while he’s under duress and rolling to his left and hitting a receiver the only place that play is successful is a pass a lot of starting QBs can’t make.
Pumping the brakes a bit… I’m not crowning him but you HAVE to like what you see.
Mendoza may very well be the better QB. But I think Simpson is - as you alluded to - in a much better situation. And situations can make players better.
It's kind of like comparing Jayden Daniels & Bo Nix. Daniels has more raw physical ability, but I would bet Nix has the better career just based on where and who he is playing for.
In Simpson's case he is closer to Mendoza in passing talent, if not better. He just lacks the great size Mendoza has.
I’ll tell you a couple other things about Ty Simpson that I LIKE better than Mendoza.
He is SO innocent in how his LIFE & Structure is with The Rams.
1.His dad is a college college coach
2.He lives at Rams Park & doesn’t drive.The Rams new practice facility is perfect.He’s the first one there.
3.His willingness to learn & grow.You can see him mature right in front of us.He gets to be a sponge & pushes Stetson to be better.
Mendoza seems goofy,while Ty Simpson will take on the character of someone like Mattew Stafford.A great influence.
Cousins from what he said after the Falcons drafted a rookie QB isn’t a good space to be in.His Faith in Vegas doesn’t seem like the best fit at this moment.He might feel the pressure of a #1 pick.Players might doubt him ?
In my opinion, system and surrounding talent can make or break a QB, but I'd probably put surrounding talent slightly ahead of system. Even Mahomes saw a noticeable drop in production despite staying in the same system. Same thing with Goff and Stafford when their Olines fell apart due to injury.
Simpson has a strong supporting cast, great coaching, and a QB-friendly scheme with defined reads and progressions. That said, his accuracy, quick feet, and release are traits that can't really be taught.
I think Mendoza could likely put up similar preseason numbers in this environment, but that's just my view from the outside. It'll be interesting to see how both players develop once they're facing live regular-season defenses. Assuming the Raiders get some Oline help.

If you're looking at the comp strictly through perspective of many commentators and critics, sure.. that's where you could end up and I get it.
And if you're thinking that I'm saying the comp *unreasonably* pumps up Simpson, that's not what I'm saying.
I'm saying the Raiders are a shit-show organization with a first-time head coach and Mendoza is in a really bad situation. I also didn't get to watch enough to see what he was being asked to do as opposed to what Simpson was being asked to do.
I'm very happy with Simpson and understood the pick from the start, even if I am a little uncomfortable with them not drafting an Offensive Tackle.
And, even with backups, several of them, including Presley and Redman, have been in the Rams system for a year... something none of the Raiders can say.
My reaction is also about just raw number comps like this.. I think they rarely tell close to the whole story about a player.

Simpson essentially hit the lottery. He'll have superior coaching, and equally as important, plenty of time to grow into the eventual starting job.
I feel like the Raiders are finally in a halfway decent place. We’ll see if they screw it up.
I think both QBs will be fine.
I keep saying he is on CAMPUS!! Don’t know if RAMS FANS know what impact this will have on THE TEAM

Well Simpson is under a great organization while Mendoza was drafted to a laughingstock franchise so I agree that it's definitely a bit unfair to compare..... however if you are drafted in the same draft class as another QB, those comparisons will always happen regardless. Both young guns got time to develop and eventually show their stuff. Gonna be some time to figure out the better QB but definitely like what Simpson has shown so far albeit it being against more 3rd stringers than anything else. Would love to see the kid get some relief play during the season if we blow some teams out. Hopefully the opposition leaves their starters in so he gets some experience/exposure vs better competition.
Great numbers for Simpson. The Rams did a great job getting him into rhythm with favorable play calls.
His ability to be in control when on the move and make great throws will serve him well in the NFL. I guess he will be compared to Mendoza for a while. For now, he has shown that he can make NFL throws and run the Rams' basic offense. It's nice to have a mobile QB for the Rams future.

Interesting question... if the Ram are way up in the 4th quarter... will McVay play Simpson or Bennett?
