He primarily plays the slot but we can call it STAR if we want. As a slot player (424 snaps there) he often rotates to one of the safety spots (173 snaps there) depending on coverage and the offenses motion.

He is also the MVP of the defense this year.

Lake was the reason the defense was versatile and could disguise coverage so well (he was also excellent in run defense).

Him returning (if healthy) will fix the defense.

McCreary and Lake should definitely shore up the defense along with a couple of nicked up defensive lineman and edge guys returning to health.
 
It is an interesting correlation seeing how poorly we’ve played without Lake. The more research I do the more I see that he is absolutely the heart of this defense and I think will have a major impact on this team.
