It's a shame Ellard had to play with guys like Jeff Kemp, Steve Dills, and Dieter Brock in his first 4 yrs. He would be a HOFer had he ended up with a legit passing attack throughout his career. He got a few yrs with Everett, in the Zampese offense, but that was about it. Not sure what he had in Washington after he left, but he was wasted in those first 3 or 4 yrs until Everett came into his own in 88' & 89'.

He should be a HOFer in his own right. He's #15 in receiving yards.....of all the WRs who played the game, he's #15. And of the other 14, only 1 had a better yards/catch average. James Lofton. As far as the HOF goes, throw in his punt return production his first 3 years. 83 returns, 4 TDs, 13.5 avg. Dude was a weapon. What could have been done with ED and Ellard and Everett for three or four years together?

I remember watching a Rams game when I was a little dude. What I’ll never forget was this curl route Ellard ran and how Everett let the ball go so far in advance before Ellard made the turn. Then all a sudden Ellard stops, turns around, jumps a mile in the air and catches the ball at the top of his jump.

The timing and execution was perfection.

I asked my uncle how Everett knew where to throw it since Ellard was still runnning. He said the play calls for 12 yards exactly.

That’s the first time I understood they don’t just huddle and say someone get open.

That Zampese offense was something to behold. I can remember a lot of these quick turnaround plays down the sideline where Everett would let the ball go when the receiver had his back to him. He turned around and the ball was on him. Tackled right away but Ellard and Flipper made it look easy, like free 10-12 yards. The DBs had to respect their speed so they played off.
Could only imagine what could have happened if they had to worry about Dickerson too.

What is remarkable is those two had only 114 recpetions but 2500 or so yards in 1989. Flipper had 1,000 plus on 44 receptions alone! Together they averaged 22 yards per catch ED would have made that O even better.

Then the Rams voted against St Louis getting an expansion franchise and the 5 year plan to move was born.
