It's in the quiet time after FA and the Draft and before OTA's...So lets talk about the common statements by some talking-heads, about how teams will figure out Jared Goff and the offensive scheme...

They (the talking-heads) will lean into one another and agree..."ah yes, the tape. It will be studied by defensive coaches and the Boy Genius McVay and his underling Jared Goff will be figured out." The talking heads will gravely say "ah yes, Goff will revert to the mean and the offense will not be as good."

I don't get this in the Ram's case. McVay will have totally new plays in the play action scheme, because he is an innovator. He may utilize his TE's more than last year. Gurley is Gurley....dude will get open in the pass game because our WR's are absolutely legit and will require attention. Goff will find the open man when they try to load up on Gurley.

So what am I not getting? Will Goff and McVay's offense take a step back this year because of "the tape?"

It's just fodder for the talking heads, McVay's offense is ever evolving, you have only seen the tip of the iceberg....The TE for example was mostly non existent along with many other facets and wrinkles that McVay will work on with Goff come 2018.

Brandon Cooks offers more of a vertical threat and will be more tuned in with the offense than Watkins was, also look for Gerald Everett to be more involved taking the jet sweep (was a running back in high school) and the passing game too. I look for Goff to evolve and work on looking off his primary WR and finding others open and the red zone efficiency will also be a priority looking towards Josh Reynolds & Temarrick Hemingway to make a huge difference.

Yes defenses will make adjustments, but so will McVay & Goff will more wrinkles to drive Defensive Coordinators around the NFL into submission.

Defenses will make adjustments, but according to talking heads, Goff is done learning, apparently. Every other QB keeps improving for years, but not Goff, according to them.

Of course, I do expect Goff to learn at least a bit. And McVay will throw in some new wrinkles. And Cooks will be a #1 receiver who actually learns the playbook. I'm not panicked. There will be some rocky points, I'm sure. And there will be some fantastic stretches of the Rams' offense clicking just right.

I don't believe in this concept of figuring them out and studying tape will be the end. How do you explain QBs like Brady, Roethlisberger, Peyton, Brees, etc. Plenty of tape on those guys, yet they don't suck!

Tape gives you the opportunity to see what and offense has done in the past. Tape gives you the opportunity see what you can do differently knowing defenses have studies the tape.

We have a lot of weapons and can use them in the same looks or packages. I think you have to trust Mcvay and the rest of the coaching staff to know that.

We also lost our offensive coordinator, and our QB coach. I wonder how much that will influence game planning. Will that aide in making last year's tape less strategic?

It’s quite apparent to me that the majority of these “talking heads” are so dug in on their idiotic “Goff is a bust” blah blah blah narrative that they now have no choice but to hope he fails

They didn't "figure out" McVay in Washington, so now with better players they somehow will in LA?

McVay knows he has to have an offense that evolves. The Rams offense gets ramped up this year. Look for Cooks to be more than an afterthought that Watkins was. Jet Sweeps, Smoke Screens, Crossing Routes and of course Deep Passes. The offense will still run through Gurley but, Cooks adds extra pressure on the defense. Gurley and Cooks opens things up for Wods, Kupp and the improving TE position. Second year TE Everett takes a big step forward with the ever improving third year TE Higbee. Goff also takes a big step forward with better command of the offense resulting in quicker reads and better decision making. Could be a few RPOs post snap along with the regular pre snap RPOs to help keep the defenses guessing. Phase II of the McVay Rams offense is going to even better than Phase I.

It has more to do with reading player tendencies than plays themselves.

Knowing the formation and play helps. Knowing what a player tends to do in certain situations helps more. The key is getting Goff to keep his game from getting predictable. We've seen plenty of player in the NFL have a breakout year and never reach that same plateau before (Robert Quinn injuries aside is one of those guys). Greg Robinson was another-- get the guy to lean and he was done for. Either beaten like a rag doll or you'd see a yellow hankie come flying in.

Success comes from avoiding predictability.

They had two years of tape from McVay's time in Washington. Everyone knows what his tendencies are. You can look up Gruden's film from his Cincy days and see similarities all over in route design, pretty basic stuff.

What sets McVay apart is how well he coaches up his players and prepares them for the gameplan. So I don't think all that BS is going to mean much. The key was getting another wideout that can ensure Goff won't have his key guy taken away. Lots of options on every route now, so no, teams aren't gonna stop it. Jared should be much more comfortable and experienced this year with another camp.

If you want to look for a reason where the Rams might take a step back, it's the defense. Secondary is loaded, the DL looks good up the middle on the line, but lots of question marks on the edge and off ball at LB. But even with that they're clearly a playoff level team, just comes down to whether this defense will allow them to be an elite team or not.
