I've boiled it down to three based on need. I've placed them in the order from strongest to weakest based on improvement as I see it. I reserve the right to change my mind the very second after I post this
.
1)
Aeneas Williams: While I think Rodney McLeod is improving and doing quite well in some aspects, having a HoFer in the secondary to team up with TJ McDonald who over the last 8 games was by more than PFF's eyes one of if not the best SS in football would make this Defense
impenetrable. VERY close call for Aeneas Williams over Dick "Night Train" Lane. Aeneas played very well all those years and he NEVER had a front 4 or front 7 like this Rams team does now. He was better than Earl Thomas and we have seen many times how much of a difference that one guy has made. When TJ McDonald started playing lights out, we really started playing well. With AW, this could be an All-Time Great D even with an O struggling with youth.
2)
Jackie Slater: There is no questioning the value of an Orlando Pace. However, I believe in GRob and Coach Boo and when he says that GRob has more talent than Will Shields, I BELIEVE him. Shields is in the HoF and GRob is working his butt off to get where he needs to be. We saw flashes of BRILLIANCE where he dominated followed by "oh, yeah...*knee slap*...there's the rookie...". However, the OL is in dire need of LEGENDARY assistance and while I project very good things for Rob Havenstein, there isn't any way I couldn't project substantial improvement for the Rams by inserting a prime Jackie Slater to bookend a 2nd year GRob.
3)
Isaac Bruce: No question Kenny Britt has stepped up and Brian Quick showed before his injury that he has turned the corner as far as "getting it". Still, Foles is going to need a target that can get open, get deep and punish defenses for stacking the box. The Rams won games with crappy QBing and NO run game almost solely on the back on Isaac Bruce. Now that we don't have a crappy QB anymore and he can get the ball out quick, this addition would yield massive and substantial difference. And I went with Bruce over Holt because I see him as the better of the two WRs, imho, and not by a small margin.
So...why not other players?
Why not...
Kurt Warner? The issue is how much of a delta or difference. It's the math. Rams legendary figure minus current figure equals GAIN. Thus, I think probably the biggest OVERALL gain is Aeneas Williams over Rodney McLeod, although the biggest individual gain is likely Jackie Slater over Rob Havenstein.

Is that to say that the difference between Kurt Warner and Nick Foles isn't really big? Of course not. However, at the QB position, it's the MOST sensitive to everything else... as we saw both when everything came together AND when things started to unravel. With the offense Fisher wants to run, he wants the ball to come out fast. Warner was more of a "hang in there, go through progressions and find the guy and make the play" kind of QB". It meant holding the ball longer. That worked for Martz's playbook, but won't for Fisher's...necessarily. Not that we'd see it, but hopefully you see where I'm coming from. And I'd certainly take a Kurt Warner clone in a NY minute (after wrestling with all of the moral issues late at night) over Foles, but as far as being the top guy? He wasn't for me for this team.
Jack Youngblood? Oh Lordy, how does a Ram fan not LOVE this man in a Blue and Gold to the marrow of your bones kind of way? If Jerry West is the NBA, Jack Youngblood should be the NFL. That said, I can't say he's an upgrade over Quinn (yeah, Quinn's that good) and he's only a marginal upgrade over Chris Long. He's probably tougher than both of them put together and he'll always be one of my ALL-TIME favorite Rams, but he wouldn't make the biggest difference on this team.
Deacon Jones? This was harder. Yes, he'd be a pretty damn big upgrade over Chris Long AND the synergy he'd create on that DL would be substantial, but it just wasn't big enough to crack even the top 3. But, I'll tell ya, I lost about 5 mins daydreaming about Deacon Jones on our DL with Quinn, Fairley and Donald and I had to wipe the drool from my face.
Merlin Olsen? Can't really replace Aaron Donald, but Nick Fairley or Michael Brockers? Yeah, we could and Olsen WOULD be an upgrade, but how much? pretty big. I dunno how big because we dunno how Fairley's gonna fair in this D, but over Brockers, it'd be pretty big. Bigger than Jones over Long, that's for sure, but just not bigger than Williams over McLeod.
Eric Dickerson? Wow... Let's put it this way. If Todd Gurley doesn't absolutely go nuclear as a rookie, he vaults to the very TOP of the list next year... However, solely by virtue of Mason's rookie year AND Gurley's potential, I'd say that Dickerson sit's just outside. However, This is the "saving the best for last" type entry. BASED ON THIS TEAM and especially, THIS OFFENSE,
I can't imagine a single player who'd better improve this team than Eric Dickerson. Again, the only reason he isn't on at the top is because I think we already HAVE a guy of his caliber (or close to it) in Gurley. If Gurley doesn't become everything we hope we expect him to be, here's my answer.
