Bryce Petty scheduled for workout with RamsPosted by Josh Alper on April 15, 2015, 5:26 PM EDT

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... with-rams/

The Rams set up workouts with Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota this month, although it will likely a big price in a trade for them to move high enough up the draft order to secure either of those quarterbacks.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher said the team intends to add a quarterback to the roster in the draft, though, which means they can’t just look at those two players. Gil Brandt of NFL Media reports that Baylor’s Bryce Petty will be on that list.

Brandt reports that Petty is scheduled to work out for the Rams on Saturday, who join the Cowboys, Jets and Chargers as teams that have spent time with Petty during the pre-draft process. While Baylor coach Art Briles has touted Petty as a first-rounder, the wider consensus has pegged him as a second day pick.

With Nick Foles in St. Louis, the Rams probably wouldn’t look to Petty as a starter right away. That’s probably best for a quarterback who had his ups and downs last year in a spread offense at Baylor and likely needs time and tutoring if his skills are going to translate to the professional level.

I would be fine with giving Petty a try, if it didn't require a second round pick to do.

He has the physical tools to be a 2nd or 3rd rounder, but I don't trust Baylor QBs. He doesn't have enough snaps under center to warrant a 2 or 3 IMO. 4th round and I think about him.

I know what you mean about Baylor QBs and him warranting a 3rd round grade. The problem is - he'll be gone by the 3rd round. I wouldn't mind it if we took him with our second. He throws a nice spiral and can develop behind Foles. Get Cooper with our 1 (I know...I know...he's gone by 5 at the latest - and so is White) and then go oline for the rest of the draft.

He would, at least, have more arm talent than anyone on the roster. Yes he needs time, but I like some of his qualities, besides his good arm.

Maybe if the plan is to trade down in round 1 and pick up an extra second rounder. But if that does not happen, using the one and only second round pick is too much.

Will be disappointed if we draft him. I much prefer Garrett Grayson to Petty.

I would take him with our round 2 pick in a heartbeat. Hope he's the pick tbh, and would prefer to take him with the pick received from a trade down from 10 overall. You simply cannot coach his arm talent, take him and let Weinke coach up his fundamentals during Foles' contract season with us.

Couldn't coach Blaine Gabbert's arm talent either. Same with JaMarcus Russell. Same with Josh Freeman. Same with a number of other unsuccessful QBs. Arm strength is one of the least important aspects of the QB position. There's a minimal amount you need for it to be functional in the NFL...beyond that, it's just cake. Nice to have but it's not something that makes a large difference.

If you believe in Petty, I'd have to hope it's for a lot more than him having a strong arm...because instincts, mental acuity, and ball placement are the difference makers. And personally, I don't believe in Petty when it comes to those three aspects.

Strike 1, strike 2, strike 3.

Isn't that success 101 at the position?

I wouldn't touch the guy either.

I agree whole heartedly once again. I'd be very disappointed if we drafted Petty.

We view the Qb's the same except the top one.
Mariota first, then Winston, Grayson, then Hundley. I might take Petty in the 4th or 5th round, that is if we have those from trading around draft time.

I know you do and I understand why the offense at Baylor really handicaps QB's at the professional level, but Petty to me seems to have some great leadership qualities and has the better arm and is more athletic. Again I understand why you have Grayson rated higher, but I have felt all along that Fisher fell for Petty at the combine again just my gut feeling.

Meh.... Nothing Fisher has done that I've heard would indicate that but never under estimate your gut feeling! Lol
I have one of those about Grayson... I think he could be outstanding and more NFL ready than guys like Petty or Hundley.
