I wonder if this is a signal that they'll be signing **someone** at the start of free agency, most likely our current guys like Barksdale, McLeod or Britt.

I don't like this move.If we have a cap problem, we need to rebuild the Bradford's contract, not cutting our better players ...

I agree with the part about not cutting decent players (not the Bradford part). Hopefully we hear that Langford refused an extension and asked to be released, because otherwise I think he should have been extended at a lower cap number. At the very least we should have heard a lot more language coming out of Rams park saying they were trying something and wanted him. I'm starting to get nervous that Wells wasn't the first one out the door. If the Rams cut Langford and entertain thoughts about bringing back Wells, I will probably go (more) insane.

Rams release DT Kendall Langford

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- In search of some much-needed salary cap space heading toward free agency, the St. Louis Rams released defensive tackle Kendall Langford on Thursday afternoon.

Parting ways with Langford saves the Rams a total of $6 million against the 2015 salary cap. A league source said the door for Langford to return to the Rams was left open but that he would seek a starting job elsewhere first.

Langford took to Twitter to thank the Rams for his time with the team:

Kendall Langford âś” @KendallLangford

Thanks for the well wishes and a huge thank you to the @STLouisRams for the opportunity to play for such a great Organization! #ramsnation

It's the lack of a starting position in St. Louis that made Langford expendable for the Rams. Langford was a starter in his first two seasons with the Rams after signing a four-year, $22 million deal to leave Miami in 2012.

But the emergence of Defensive Rookie of the Year Aaron Donald eventually forced the Rams hand. Donald claimed the starting job in week 6 against San Francisco.

From there, Langford's snaps dipped to an average of 27.6 over the season's final 12 games after he played 34 per game in the first four contests. With less playing time, Langford's production dropped to 25 tackles and one sack in 2014.

Langford was due to count $7 million against next year's cap with a base salary of $6 million. In releasing him, the Rams will save all of the base salary while carrying $1 million in "dead" money as the only piece left from his initial $4 million signing bonus.

After leaving the Dolphins for the Rams in 2012, Langford started all 16 games in his first two seasons in St. Louis. He set career highs in tackles (49) and sacks (five) in 2013.

With Donald, they changed how they play on the DL, used to be the big, tall DTs like Langford and Brockers would play run downs, the nSims and Hayes would be DTs on likely run downs and they played left- and right. Now, they have a nose and a 3-tech with Donald the 3-tech.

I do hope the resign Langford for less money as a 3rd DT.

No surprise to any of us. 6 mill is too much for someone that isn't a starter. Depth can be had for less money.
He's still a good player. Too bad we can't afford him

Maybe we'll get to see more of Westbrooks this upcoming season. Just please don't bring in another Carrington...

I liked him too. What an embarrassment of riches we have, that we'd even consider releasing him... to think, not too long ago, we were pining for DT's, reminiscing to the good ol' days of Jimmy Kennedy, etc.

I would have rather cut Wells, Jake Long, and Dunbar and kept Kendall. Just saying.

Releasing Kendall Langford makes sense, but Rams need depth
By Nick Wagoner

http://espn.go.com/blog/st-louis-ra...sing-langford-makes-sense-but-rams-need-depth

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- The St. Louis Rams' decision Thursday afternoon to part ways with defensive tackle Kendall Langford came as no surprise.

The Rams needed salary-cap space, and releasing Langford afforded them an extra $6 million in that regard. And though Langford was a solid and probably underrated player in his time in St. Louis, he had lost his job to dynamic rookie Aaron Donald. There aren't many teams willing to eat a $7 million cap charge for a backup at any position.

Even from Langford's standpoint, it was probably for the best because it allows him a chance to go seek a starting job elsewhere. Having played well in both a 3-4 (in Miami) and 4-3 (in St. Louis) defense, Langford should have no problem finding work. At 28, he figures to have plenty of good football in front of him and the Rams did the right thing to let him go now so he can seek a job before the free-agent market opens on March 10.

So for both sides, it's a move that was not only logical but handled as well as a breakup can be. But while the Rams understandably didn't want to pay such a premium for depth at defensive tackle, Langford's release does leave them shorthanded on the interior of the defensive line.

As it stands, only starters Michael Brockers and Donald are signed for 2015. The Rams also have William Hayes, Eugene Sims and Ethan Westbrooks, all of whom are ends by trade but have the ability to shift inside situationally. Absent Langford and considering they're unlikely to re-sign Alex Carrington, who disappointed after signing a one-year deal last year, the Rams now again could find themselves in the market for help at defensive tackle.

That doesn't even take into account that Brockers is scheduled to be a free agent after next season. The Rams under coach Jeff Fisher have valued the ability to have a rotation among defensive lineman, though that has been tempered a bit by Donald's ability to play at a high level for most of the game.

The free-agent market at defensive tackle looks intriguing at the moment but the Rams will almost certainly be shopping in the bargain bin if they look to add a veteran. This year's NFL draft also doesn't look to be flush with talent at the position but again, the Rams probably won't need to spend serious draft capital to find a capable body.

Some were surprised a year ago when the Rams drafted Donald because they already had Brockers, Langford and Carrington in place. With only Brockers and Donald in place this time around, another addition or two at the position shouldn't take anybody by surprise.

They should've tried to trade him and get something for him,I can see a team giving us a 4th or 5th for him.Especially a team who's front four is lacking that inside rush.
