I don't like it because of the matchup issue. Some teams, most teams have a stronger unit and a weaker one. So if both teams best units are on offense, the coin flip is too big a factor in deciding the outcome.

Fans will stay to see another quarter. When it's your own team a game flies by when the score is close.

I’m fine with a TD winning as opposed to the old OT rules.
What I don’t like is going from a 15 min OT to a 10 min OT.

Super Bowl a few years back when the Falcons had the big lead and let the Pats come back and they tied it. Went to OT. Pats won toss and you know what happened. I really believe the Falcons should be given a chance; let the Pats kick to them and the Falcons have the one chance to tie it with a TD. This rule should change but I don't make the rules. Still, I agree with some that a coin toss should not determine the outcome.

The falcons had their chance and they blew it. Ratboy could have called three running plays when they were in easy fg position to go ahead by 11 and the game would have been over but he had to call a long developing passing play and screwed it all up.

Point well taken and I really can't argue with you--but I still prefer some kind of change in the OT rule. Thanks for chiming in. I appreciate it.

In my humblest of opinions I think the NFL should adopt something similar to college overtime rules where teams get successive turns to score from the 25 yard line (or similar). Some may disagree, but I think for fans it would be exciting to see the teams' stars play instead of sitting on the bench. It would also cut down on injury risk (less plays and no kick-offs). Overtime would be short to satisfy the networks. And, there would be no ties.

I think adopting the college system (or something similar) would be a win for everybody,... except the loser in overtime of course.:p

i'm sorry but that system blows. that's why it works with the college game.

we may as well put a bin in the corner of the endzone and have each qb stand on the middle of the 30 yard line and try to throw the ball into it. first to 3 drop ins wins. that has about as much relevance to the game as the college ot system.

Tell that to the Bucs players. I know they won't agree with you. I'm sure the Chiefs would have wanted a chance to get a TD in the AFC Championship game where the defenses where non-existent in the 4th quarter.

In both games, viewers would have been clued to the game to see if the loser would have scored a tieing TD.

What's silly is giving a team a win because they guessed a coin toss correctly while giving a team a loss without a chance to score while on offense.

Yesterday's game was an example of why I'm not a fan of the OT rule. Tampas defense was on the field for Seattle's final drive to end the 4th quarter then Seattle won the toss so Tampas D had to go back out and do it again gassed and without a breather. Super disadvantage in my opinion.

With that said I dont think it would've made a difference in this specific game. I feel like Buccs lost that game as soon as they started playing from behind.

So if the receiving team holds the ball for 9:59 and kicks a FG, is OT over? Or does the other team get an untimed possession?

What about an overtime like this? No more kick offs in OT. Instead teams start at the 50. Both teams get at least one possession.

Well players can get hurt in the first quarter too. Maybe they shouldn't play then either?

If you like they way OT is played out that's fine. Each to his own but you won't convince me that it's fair when only one teams D is put to the test under do or die conditions but not the other. Most D's are gassed by then. Which makes the coin toss way to significant IMO.

How about no overtime and just a tie unless it's playoffs, at which point you just play real football quarter by quarter until someone wins?

If Tampa would have received the ball 1st and scored a TD, I'm sure the OP wouldn't have created the same post, the OT rule likely would be fine then.
I don't understand why both teams cant get a possession, then sudden death if time permits.
But its so much better than it used to be so I'm not complaining

And I'm pretty sure its about 50/50 who wins getting ball 1st since they changed it
