Seems counter-intuitive for the league to implement tons of rules to protect the quarterback because they are the stars of the league -- the bread and butter if you will --- and yet the league also puts in place a system where a rising star like Patrick Mahomes never takes the field in a crucial overtime match (last season's AFC championship).

So I think the league has to have an overtime system where each team has at least one offensive possession in overtime.

Building a crappy defense is a choice. If the coach chooses to build a defense he isn't comfortable going into OT with, then it's his fault when he loses. If he wants to build a stingy defense that doesn't get takeaways and it let's him down because it isn't good enough, his fault. If he builds a defense that gives up yardage but gets lots of takeaways and they don't get a takeaway, his fault.

Build a defense, build an offense, build your special teams, live with your choices. Don't whine because the other team's strength beat your weakness. You chose that weakness. Don't ask for the rules to save you from your bad choices.

What's wrong with the way NCAA does it?

Each team gets the ball at the 35..equal possessions... who ever scores more wins

To start with, those stats count. I'd imagine NFL teams would have a huge issue with that for incentives. I personally have an issue with it from a record book standpoint. Every record would get shattered because every team would get into a game every year where the final score ends up ridiculously high.

From a football perspective I loathe the NCAA OT. You're putting them in scoring range immediately without them having to drive and earn it. I'd rather have FG kickers go at it to decide the game

You basically just said this:

Seems counterintuitive to put in rules to protect QBs while also preventing them from playing more snaps, thereby putting them in harm's way more frequently.

Having OT end is all about the players not playing anymore than they have to for safety

You are right. In the end it is all about the players not playing anymore than they need to for safety. But the question is where is that line? If the league really wanted to protect the quarterback and players then why not have a field goal "shoot out" in overtime?

At some point the players have to play. And the NFL is ultimately just entertainment. Spectacle. Yes players should not play anymore than they have to for safety.... but I think the stars of the league have to play on the biggest stage.

I guess this solution is confusing to me. The average TD drive is probably around 6-7 minutes. We're talking about instances where you can't stop the other team (hence this thread and most people's complaints):

Possession 1 - 15 minutes down to 9 minutes - TD
Possession 2 (other team) - 9 minutes down to 3 minutes - TD
Possession 3 - 3 minutes to go and the other team can't stop you (hence these complaints), FG, game over

Same result but for some reason we played an extra 9 minutes?

An extra exciting 9 minutes. It also could go like this.

Possession 1 15 minutes down to 10 minutes-TD
Possession 2 10 Minutes down to 5 minutes-TD
Possession 3 5 minutes down to 3:30 Minutes on a 3 and out no score punt.
Possession 4 3:30 minutes runs out the clock as the game-winning FG is good.

Both teams had equal possessions. The NFL should make the winning of the coin have less of an influence on the outcome of the game as possible. Nothing outside of equal possessions would be ideal. Because of time restraints, you can't keep giving "last licks". I would still prefer that teams at least get at one chance to match a TD and have the game continue.

Those XFL rules make their game way too gimmicky for my liking.

As much as I hate kickers you would think that I would really like those rules of theirs... but Hell No for me with what they're doing.

Hopefully they'll have stripper like cheerleaders... otherwise I may not watch much of their games if any.

I understand the gimmick shit because they have no chance to make it just on a different time of year...The lack of enough quality talent ensures that they'll never be able to compete straight up with the NFL...Doesn't make me any more interested though...I've seen enough of the minor league stuff...
