Brockers is the Roger Saffold of the defensive line.

We’ll feel it.
He is definitely not. Hes the havenstien except he was never really that good. Brockers has been nothing more than an average player. Most sacks hes ever had was 5.5 and 9 pass deflections in his CAREER. Sorry hes not a good player like saffold.

He is a very good run defense guy but in Wades defense, the key is the Nose Tackle - some big guy who can take on two guys on run plays. Leaves Donald and the other Defensive Tackle to make the play.

We didn't see that this year in SJD when playing Dallas and Baltimore.

Our run defense was very good in the other games for the most part.

The question I have is

1) Do we keep SJD and hope he improves so that teams like Dallas and Baltimore don't run us over like they did this year? or

2) Hope Gaines improves in his second year and becomes the guy or

3) Get someone else

I believe this team is fairly set with the players we got in the other positions even if we let Fowler or Littleton go if

We get improved play from our center (Corbett?) and nose tackle (SJD or Gaines or Other) and also still get decent play from our left tackle position (Whitworth? Noteboom? other?)

1,2,3 then yes all the below

I’d have to agree on the value of the 2 players.Saffold never had the best career, but was never put in an excellent postion to be exceptional.
-Saffolds cost to keep might have been to much. I think he maybe one of the best run blocking guards in the NFL ?? Henry from Tennessee was the rush leader, so my guess Roger was a big piece of that ??

Brockers has been a solid core Ram. I was not in favor of cutting him this past season, but he not worth the price tag.

Snead pretty much said as much .

On this team... Brockers needs to be replaced by someone cheaper.

That’s not a strike on the player, just a reality of how this team is built right now.

NT is about the last position I want to see addressed in 2020, other than hopefully changing out SJD for Gaines. Interior defensive linemen sometimes take a couple years to develop, not everyone can be an Aaron Donald. Gaines has that shorter, stocky frame which I like for the position, although I'd like to see him add another 5lbs. of muscle this off-season. SJD, imo, should concentrate more at 3T and maybe become a rotational player behind both Donald & Gaines, then we can also say goodbye to Tanzel Smart. Either way, I draft with one of our earliest picks a 5T DE to replace Brockers and come back later and draft a 3T DT to compete with SJD as both Donald's and the NT's back-up. jmo.

I consider SJD to be a solid backup who played less than half the D snaps because there was no better alternative.

I doubt anoiting his sparsely used back up as the starter is going to magically produce any meaningful improvement in the run D.

In any event, with our cap situation and draft capital we will be fortunate to get one of the lines really squared away by opening day 2020.

The Dline seems destined to again be AD and some jags.

Very unfortunate, who would of thought that AD would miss Suh this much. Teams can just double/triple team AD all game without anyone else making them pay. That's why I say start letting guys walk and start cutting old guys on Defense (Weddle/Mathews)

I’ll give you a like because you expressed an opinion.

I’m going to disagree with that opinion though because I have my own.

we’ve always said that Brockers value cannot be seen through the stat sheet. If that’s what you need to see to judge him then that’s ok. Let me just remind you that there were those that felt losing Saffold wouldn’t hurt much. But Then the season started and many people changed that tune.

So....im thinking you’ll be one of the guys talking about how important Brocker “ was “ next year.

Reasonable line of thinking.

My hope is that Gaines provides more improvement from year 1 to year 2 than did SJD, but your guess is as good as mine on what the final results will show for next season.
I'm not nearly as pessimistic about the off-season as you sound concerning the draft & CAP, I believe we do have the resources to improve both the OL and DL in a big way, whether the team approaches it that way is another story.
Outside of Donald, from what I observed, the DL was loaded with jags this past season.
jmo.

Aw see I won't because hes an average player on an average dline. If he was better our defensive stats would be a lot better. Teams ran all over us this year and it's barely a running league. Against run heavy teams ala the Baltimore ravens we got absolutely smashed.
Dallas ruined us and so did some others. We had a couple of good games against the run but they were arguably bad teams. I get that we like brockers and hes a great team player but hes not suited for this defense.
