Offseason Outlook: Rams DL Michael Brockers set to enter free agency

Defensive tackle Michael Brockers was general manager Les Snead's first draft pick with the Rams back in 2012 and has provided leadership and versatility to the Los Angeles' defensive line ever since. He has especially effective against the run, and fellow Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald even called him one of the best run-stoppers in the NFL and a big part of what they're able to do with their run defense.

Eight years later, Brockers is scheduled to become a free agent when the new league year begins on March 18, his three-year contract extension signed in 2016 having officially run its course.

Speaking during the week leading to the season finale against the Cardinals, Brockers said that he would like to remain a Ram but also knows nothing is guaranteed in this league.

"In my mind, (being) biased, I would love to be here," Brockers said. "I've played the position, I'm comfortable here, comfortable with the coaching staff, comfortable with the standards we uphold here, but I understand it's a business as well. Understanding that aspect, you never know."

Should Brockers not re-sign, the Rams could look internally or use the draft or free agency to find his replacement.

One internal solution would be re-signing defensive end Morgan Fox, who is scheduled to become a restricted free agent. He produced 12 tackles and two sacks while playing in all 16 games and had a reserve role in the defensive line rotation for the majority of his third season, but also got three starts.

When Fox saw time on the field, he would usually line up as a five-technique defensive lineman. In a 3-4 defense, the base scheme which defensive coordinator Wade Phillips employs, that defensive lineman lines up directly across from the offensive tackle – which is what Brockers also often did.

If Los Angeles opts not to re-sign Fox, the draft or free agency route would likely come into play.

Given the 29-year-old Brockers has shown no signs of slowing down – each of his last three seasons have all been his most productive in eight-year career in terms of total tackles – and the value his positional versatility creates for the Rams' defense, though, a potential return to the Rams would seem to be favorable for both sides. Currently, the only hurdle he has to clear prior to his pending free agency is healing a sprained left ankle sustained in the season finale.

Rams will miss Michael Brockers loved him the day he was drafted as at LSU he was very active and has been a great Ram, but because of money, it's time to move on. Hopefully they replace Brockers drafting either Leki Fotu of Utah or Rashard Lawrence another LSU Tiger.

Brockers will cost too much. Time for him to move on. I hate to see him go, one of my favorite players. Brockers, along with Weddle, Mathews, Roby-Coleman and Whitworth, save about 20mil in cap space.

I hope Brockers stays. It would break my hart to see this man go. He is such a stand up guy and hard worker. I can only imagine he's a guy in the locker room that players look up too. Maybe a new 6 billion dollar stadium and the love he has for his teammates will allow him to take a little less contract wise. I can hope!! If he leaves it's gonna hurt me, just like when Saffold left......broke my heart. Stay Michael Brockers!! Stay!!

I can't see how the Rams can afford him. I didn't see much of a pass rush from him considering Donald got a lot of attention. I think Rams will miss him against the run. Hard for me to say if Fox will be able to take over for him. Rams will need to at least get someone else to help Fox. Who knows what the defensive line will look like in 2020. Is it a 3-4 or a 4-3?

Its going to be a mistake to let him leave. Hopefully his value won't be there and we can get him back on the cheap.

He is a very good run defense guy but in Wades defense, the key is the Nose Tackle - some big guy who can take on two guys on run plays. Leaves Donald and the other Defensive Tackle to make the play.

We didn't see that this year in SJD when playing Dallas and Baltimore.

Our run defense was very good in the other games for the most part.

The question I have is

1) Do we keep SJD and hope he improves so that teams like Dallas and Baltimore don't run us over like they did this year? or

2) Hope Gaines improves in his second year and becomes the guy or

3) Get someone else

I believe this team is fairly set with the players we got in the other positions even if we let Fowler or Littleton go if

We get improved play from our center (Corbett?) and nose tackle (SJD or Gaines or Other) and also still get decent play from our left tackle position (Whitworth? Noteboom? other?)

Brockers and Whitworth save $0 of cap space since they aren't signed to contracts.

Agree. He'll be a far better fit anchoring as a 3T DT in a base 4-3, he's no 5T DE. He can take Fox & Smart with him imo.
That article is quite the puff piece ...

I think Fox is just as good as Brockers playing in the 3/4. It's not saying much as both have been mediocre at best this season. However, Brockers hasn't ever lived up to his draft status, time to move on.

Fox is fine as a rotation guy. In fact he's probably our best depth DL overall.

Smart is terrible on the other hand, have no idea what the staff sees with him. Really hope he's gone next season.

They don't save cap space if they are already not on the 2020 cap.

Weddle, Matthews and Coleman can save cap room if moved/ released because they currently count against the cap.

Whitworth and Brockers are already not counted. Now sure re-signing them eats up space, but they don't open up additional room from our current $25M cap figure.

That figure is what it is barring trading, releasing, or restructuring a current 2020 rostered player.

We've been playing a without a formidable heavyweight NT for three years now.

Brockers has been a solid player but paid more like an elite one. I hope we use his formerly huge salary figure for a true NT on the FA market or bolster the OL with that $ and roll the dice on an monster sized NT using one of our top draft choices.

Hate drafting for need but boy do both our lines have need(s).

Such is life when you can no longer run the ball effectively and get easily outmuscled by opposing teams with powerhouse running games.

Great locker room and team guy, but an average player that got paid. He should have been eating his whole career. He came in next to Quinn, Long and Langford. Then Donald shows up and he never got better. Decent run stopper, but never dominant. I never got the hype with him besides looking the part. Move SJD into his spot and draft a true NT and also draft DE competition. Donald needs help on the line badly.

NT is about the last position I want to see addressed in 2020, other than hopefully changing out SJD for Gaines. Interior defensive linemen sometimes take a couple years to develop, not everyone can be an Aaron Donald. Gaines has that shorter, stocky frame which I like for the position, although I'd like to see him add another 5lbs. of muscle this off-season. SJD, imo, should concentrate more at 3T and maybe become a rotational player behind both Donald & Gaines, then we can also say goodbye to Tanzel Smart. Either way, I draft with one of our earliest picks a 5T DE to replace Brockers and come back later and draft a 3T DT to compete with SJD as both Donald's and the NT's back-up. jmo.

Now that's an idea moving SJD to his spot. I think he would flourish there

Both Brockers and SJD are poor fits for this defense. Brockers lacks the speed to play edge he's strictly a 3T playing in a straight 4-3 scheme. SJD lacks the sand at the POA and can't get off a block. IMO SJD is likely out of the NFL sooner rather than later.

Back to the subject of Brockers, he simply didn't play up to the $10M cap hit. Okoronkwo showed enough to fill the edge roll at least to start. Neither Smart or Fox impressed at all IMO. When Fox rotated in they ran right over him and he didn't provide much in the way of pass rush. Fox is very slow to play the edge. He also lacks the length you want at the position and his lack of size and length shows in his play. He's poor at the POA and simply can't set a hard edge as he's easily blown out.

They have Okoronkwo to play DE where he flashed enough in his limited snaps to show potential at this level. He needs to strengthen and improve his technique and should be much better and consistent next year. I like Ogbo as his relentless style of play reminds me of Ebukam who has become a legitimate impact player. If I had a choice between Ogbo or Brockers it's not even close, as Okoronkwo has the potential at DE that Brockers has not shown.

It was clear the day they drafted Okoronkwo he was Brockers replacement. So frankly the decision was made back in 2018 and Brocker's play this year has given them no reason to second guess their plans.
