On Thursday, the NFL announced dates for every team’s rookie minicamp in May – every team except the Los Angeles Rams, that is.
The Rams were the only team on the list that didn’t have rookie minicamp dates listed, and it’s because they aren’t going to hold one – not in a traditional sense, that is. And this isn’t out of the ordinary for them. They usually onboard their rookies with an orientation-type program rather than getting them on the field for three days of practice, preparing them for life as professional football players.

Some teams will only have one- or two-day minicamps, but most will utilize the maximum of three days to get their rookies acclimated.


Though the Rams aren’t scheduled to hold a rookie minicamp, they will have OTAs coming up soon and mandatory minicamp in the middle of June before they break for the summer before training camp.

• OTA Offseason Workouts: May 22-23, May 25, May 30-May 31, June 2, June 5-8
• Mandatory Minicamp: June 13-15

The Rams will be welcoming a lot of rookies into their building this offseason after selecting 14 players in the draft and signing 26 more as undrafted free agents. They make up almost half of the 84-man roster right now, so it’s an inexperienced group in Thousand Oaks.

No biggie, rookie minicamps were basically spent on "on boarding" activities, i.e. "Welcome to the NFL, this is what will be expected" etc, etc. Practices are walk throughs explaining how they are run. They really aren't losing anything.

What can you really get accomplished in 3 days. So it seems rookie orientation is a good use of that time. Ensure they get financial training so as not to be bleeding money. Learn about being careful with women. Learn how to say "no" to friends and family looking to hitch a ride. What areas of the city to avoid. Et cetera.

..not mention learning how to plan and shop for the right foods, how to cook it up, etc... At least until you can adequately afford the part-time chef to insure the dietary requirements of an NFL player!

Weird. NFL is a copycat league, so I wonder what the Rams are thinking as compared to the other 31 teams.

The NFLPA allows for three days for rookie camp, so I wonder why the Rams are voluntarily giving it up.

They can't practice normally so why bother? The coaches can use the time to finalize their plans and for McVay to set up his expectations for the new guys. The coaches can spend the time reviewing their positional players. IMO it's time better spent by the coaching staff.

How much does a staff see with the rookies facing the rookies? The most they’d get out of it is playing catch.

I look at it this way. The Rams don’t think they need to see the rookies, running around not really able to execute the offense or defense because they’d be lacking some players to fill positions. They couldn’t exactly run the actual offensive and defensive schemes. Plus they are confident in who they drafted. They don’t need to see them as a group on the field.

I like the education that the Rams are doing instead.
