What is going through that guy's head that he thinks that is a good idea?

Fines, suspensions, costing his team a playoff game...obviously a hardheaded, mean spirited individual.

I think it's time for the NFL to permanently ban Burfict. He's got a long recorded history of going out of his way to seriously injure other players. NFL players have enough to think about without Burfict trying to drill his helmet into the side of their knees.

For sure, it's time they sent a message that shitty dirty play is no longer OK. This isn't a sport where you "be a man" by hurting someone.

But if they didn't kick James Harrison out they won't kick this asshole out.

I wish the NFL would grow the same balls for dirty hits that they have recently shown for domestic violence but oh well.

Vontaze Burfict’s suspension will be resolved by independent hearing officer
Posted by Mike Florio on August 28, 2017

With the league having so much control over so many aspects of player discipline, it’s easy to forget that, in one specific area, the NFL doesn’t make the final call.

When it comes to punishment imposed for on-field misconduct, the league and the NFL Players Association have jointly hired, and jointly compensate, a pair of hearing officers to resolve the appeals: Derrick Brooks and James Thrash. One of them will determine whether: (1) the hit from Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict on Chiefs fullback Anthony Sherman was illegal; and (2) if so, whether he should be suspended five games for it.

Burfict’s history has a direct influence on the punishment. The NFL employs a system of progressive discipline in matters of this nature, with the thinking being that the punishment will increase until the player gets the message. Burfict, in the league’s view, clearly hasn’t gotten the message.

And so, after a three-game suspension imposed (and upheld) after an illegal hit on Steelers receiver Antonio Brown, Burfict now faces the next level — a five-game banishment. If this one is upheld and he still doesn’t get the message, it will continue to get worse.

Was Vontaze Burfict’s hit legal?

Before a hearing officer can decide whether a five-game suspension represents the appropriate punishment for Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict, a hearing officer must decide whether the hit merits any punishment at all.

That’s the real question here. Did Burfict deliver an illegal hit to Chiefs fullback Anthony Sherman? He was running a pass route, which this year puts him within the scope of the protections afforded to defense players. Which means that Sherman can’t be struck in the head or neck area.

Was he? Look at the video. While there may have been some minor, incidental contact with Sherman’s facemask, Burfict dropped a shoulder into the chest of Anthony Sherman. The fact that the ball was away doesn’t matter; the punishment doesn’t arise from unnecessary roughness. It flows directly from the notion that Burfict hit Sherman in the head and neck area while he was defenseless.

I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for the best,” Burfict told the team’s official website. “I feel like I’ve let down my teammates, but I also feel like I’ve done a good job with this. I only had one personal foul last year. We feel like this was a legal hit. I hit him in the shoulder. I hit hard, so it may have looked like I hit him in the head, but it was the shoulder. I helped him up and he said he was good and I asked if he was good on the next series and he said, ‘Yeah, that was a legal hit.'”

Sherman’s opinion doesn’t matter. Ultimately, the league office’s opinion doesn’t, either. The question here becomes whether the hearing officer believes the hit was illegal. If it wasn’t, there’s no basis for disciplining Burfict at all.

That's a football play....ball is headed in the direction...player looks to be within 5 yards of the LOS....legal there

Hit is in the chest...maybe he's not looking...at the most it's unnecessary roughness.

5 game checks :banghead:after 3 game checks last year on a hit on Antonio:banghead:....:dizzy:

I like the way Burfict plays....he makes the team better....and the Bengals are always in the playoffs:sneaky:.

Disagree entirely. Burfict has been a cheapshot artist since his college days, and I'm of the opinion that not only was this unnecessary and illegal, but that Burfict needs to be gone for good. He's never going to get the message, and if Josh Gordon can face a lifetime ban for weed, Burfict should get the same for his cheapshots.

What makes a football play a cheapshot? Should he avoid any unnecessary contact? Or, just the hits that could hurt people? Hitting is part of the game.

The ball went 20 yards downfield. Defenseless player and he hit him with the shoulder pad to the head. It's completely against the rules, probably not a suspension if not for it's a player with Burfect at history.

That hit was not a football play. He goes for knees, he goes for headshots to players who can't avoid them, and he's never going to learn how to hit someone cleanly.

Again, there's no way that hit was a football play. That was as dirty as hardcore lesbian porn.

Almost everyone agrees that the hit was directed at the players shoulder/chest area....below the head...looks like it in the video's too.

He plays like it's the 1970s but that doesn't look like a suspension type of hit to me.

Yes that's an old time hit. Looks to be still legal today. That's the intimidation hit for the next time Anthony Sherman crosses over the middle.

Respect you brother but disagree here.
Being thrown in the same direction means nothing to this or him. It's almost like targeting in college. Seems obvious he just wanted to hit someone. How is he playing the ball ? He isn't and unfortunately his history got him 5 games. He's dirty and has a history of it.
When do you see anyone else doing something like this without the ball at least being close to the guy he's hitting ..

Had to watch it again and the throw is like 30 yards downfield. Just no reason for this play. IMO.

I'm guessing at this point you could murder someone and still be suspended fewer games than Zeke.

http://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/nfl-video-rulebook/defenseless-player/

Section 2.1
Forcibly hitting the defenseless player with the helmet, face mask, forearm or shoulder in the head or neck area even if the initial contact is lower than the neck and regardless if the defensive player attempts to tackle the defenseless player by wrapping up or grasping him.

It's amazing people cry about cte but don't realize or e en like rules the NFL has put in place to try to protect the players. As I've said before this isn't dirty but it's absolutely and undeniably illegal and it's unnecessary! Burfect doing this didn't help his team on that play yet he knowingly, yet again broke the rules. I think this will be his ninth fine and/or suspension in four years for this garbage.
