Not talking about the Rams trading for him...

But this has been a popular topic on Sirius radio. Lots of speculation Payton could be available via trade. First round draft picks, etc.

My question is; why? Why would any team consider trading picks for him?

I get that he's won a SB. But he's had back to back losing seasons... WITH Drew Brees at QB.

Repeat; with Drew Brees.

I think Payton could probably benefit from a change of scenery, but isn't that also concerning?

Payton is a good HC. But I just don't see any team giving up draft picks for him.

Totally agree. No way I trade a pick for him. His team's can score, but his defenses always suck no matter who the coordinator is. He is to opposite of Fisher.

I'll take him as an OC in a heartbeat we need someone like him to get the offence going. And with GW as DC this defence can finally show its true potential.Don't know if they will ever work on the same team again but if they do it can be something special.

Worked out good for the Buccaneers when they acquired Jon Gruden from the Raiders. Overall if I felt he was our guy and I was the Colts for example and felt he would go to the New York Giants then I would make the deal in a heartbeat.

As much hoopla that was made of bounty gate, IMO, it just showcases how great of a defensive coordinator that Gregg Williams is because every other defensive coordinator has failed miserably under Payton, however, under Williams they won a Super Bowl.

Remember Buddy Ryan punching the OC on his own team during a game? Williams would make that seem like child's play I bet.

If Williams became head coach, and brought Payton in as his OC, would he put a bounty on his own offensive coordinator?

It's funny. I think Asshole Face is like Jon Gruden in a lot of ways. Similar coach and I'd rate them similarly. Which is my issue. I think Gruden was a good but not great coach. Feel the same way about Payton. In most cases, I would not trade anything for him. But there are a couple teams that I think would be smart to trade for him...a team with a quality QB and a strong defense in place.(along with a quality DC)

I think Miami and Indy are two teams that make sense for Payton.(Miami makes the most sense) But I'm not sure it's worth trading for him with either team. Neither of them have a quality DC. I'd need to know who he was going to have DC the team.

Good Points and I would not be shocked if the best defensive coordinator on the market will not even be a DC in 2016. IMO, Jim Schwartz will be the next Head Coach of the Tennessee Titans. If I were the Colts I would trade for Payton to keep Andrew Luck happy and then make a strong run at Mike Smith as Defensive Coordinator.

I'm not a tan of Gruden as a HC either.
He was a great OC though, in Philly.

Regarding Payton being traded to Miami. It sounds just like the dumb move a Miami or Washington would make. Sell the farm and outbid everyone.

Yea, Miami would be smart to get him...but not by trading an important pick for him.

He'd need to convince me that he has an excellent OC coming with him for Mariota's sake. I don't think he's a bad HC. But I'd need to believe in his staff.

If the Indy job opens; it's going to be the sought after job.

QB in place.

Weak division.

Real chance to win, early, and often.

Actually he had a well respected offensive coordinator in Detroit in none other than Scott "Milquetoast." Linehan, not my favorite, but someone that has had success so I'm sure because of Mariota Schwartz would have somebody in mind going in and besides Brian Schottenheimer lives in Nashville too.;)

I have no logical reason for this but I can't stand Sean Peyton. That said, if he ends up with the Rams one day and turns this mess around, I will change my mind. :)

http://ninernoise.com/2014/02/25/history-nfl-mlb-nba-nhl-head-coaches-traded-another-team/

NFL:

  • The New York Jets allowed head coach Herm Edwards out of his contract in 2006 so he could sign with the Kansas City Chiefs. In exchange, the Chiefs gave up a fourth-round draft selection.

  • At the conclusion of the 2001 season, the Raiders allowed Jon Gruden to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Oakland received first- and second-round picks in the 2002 draft, a first-round pick in the 2003 draft and a second-round pick in the 2004 draft. The Buccaneers also gave the Raiders cash.

  • One day after Bill Belichick was hired by the Jets as head coach in 2000, he quit his job. A few weeks later, he was hired by the New England Patriots as their head coach. After the announcement, the Jets demanded compensation from the Patriots because Belichick was still under contract with the team.

  • The Patriots gave the Jets a first-round selection in the 2000 draft, a fourth-round selection in the 2001 draft and a seventh-round selection in the 2002 draft. The Patriots not only hired Belichick, but also received a fifth-round selection in the 2001 draft and a seventh-round selection in the 2002 draft from the Jets.

  • In 1997, the Jets tried to hire Bill Parcells as head coach. However, he was still under contract with the Patriots who would not release him out of his final year with the team. To get around that, the Jets tried to name Belichick, an assistant to Parcells with the Jets, as head coach and Parcells as a consultant in exchange for two first-round picks in the 1997 draft.

  • Commissioner Paul Tagliabue rejected that deal. But a week later he did accept a deal that involved Parcells to be named head coach of the Jets. The Patriots received third- and fourth-round picks in the 1997 draft, a second-round pick in the 1998 draft and a first-round pick in the 1999 draft. The Jets also donated $300,000 to a Patriots charity.

And with a record setting shitty defense two times.

Brees I will give up picks for if I am a GM. But if I have Fisher why would I fire him, pay him 7MIL, then pay Payton who isn't going to be any better.

That's a dumbass move IMO.

Except that Chudzinski is waiting in the wings for that HC job. IIRC, the Colts wouldn't allow Fisher to interview him for the Rams OC job.

Not sure about that, I realize that Chudzinski is highly regarded by Colts GM Ryan Grigson, however, I have a feeling Irsay is going to want a bigger name and someone with a better Head Coaching record then the man he's replacing.

Peyton as our OC? Seriously? What makes you think he'd even consider that? He'll normal top OC candidates wouldn't even consider because of Fisher bs offense he tries to run. This is just fantasy thinking about this dumb shit.
