Not much here. Good news if they get it right.

NFL planning “top-down review” of officiating

The NFL has an officiating problem, and changes may be coming this offseason.

The league is planning a “top-down review” of officiating for this offseason, Judy Battista of NFL Network reported. That review will include examining who should be in charge of replay reviews at the officiating command center.

Currently, that’s the domain of senior V.P. of officiating Al Riveron. The NFL Network report didn’t mention Riveron by name, but if there’s going to be a “top-down review,” Riveron’s job may be on the line.

The league clearly needs to make significant changes. During the offseason this year, a missed call in the NFC Championship Game led to replay review of pass interference. But that clearly wasn’t enough to fix the league’s problems with officiating. More significant changes in the officiating department may be necessary.

I have been saying that there needs to be more accountability on the part of NFL officials, for years!

I get the element of human error and the nature of judgement calls. These things are inevitable. What really irks me is that replay is available and they still get it wrong. The Pittsburgh game is the best Rams example but I’ve seen it regularly for every team this year. Riveron will take the fall because of the number of fans calling for his head.

I also get that the rules keep getting tweaked to improve player safety while attempting to make the game more appealing to the fans. To me, what most
players and coaches want is consistency and that’s what needs to be the focus of the offseason.

These are the issues that bug me most:

1. Roughing the passer calls when it’s simply a good tackle or a player is blocked into a bad position. This is a play that turns a defensive win into an automatic first down and errors here can actually impact a game significantly more than most. It should be reviewable.

2. Like the roughing calls, tackles that are called unnecessary roughness due to it looking like a shot to the head when it’s actually a clean tackle to the shoulder impacts the outcome of a game too significantly. Once again, such a play should be reviewed.

3. The standards for offensive and defensive holding must become more consistent. Making it reviewable is untenable, but the onfield improvement needs to be a major focus.

4. If I were a replay official, I’d want to hear the broadcast feed, especially when a “technical consultant“ is asked to provide input. I get that we want accuracy and external influences can compromise judgement, but this game isn’t played in a vacuum. The additional input can be helpful in the right hands.

I believe if these things were properly addressed, we could get a far better game for us fans to enjoy. Oh, and if Belicheat were banned for life and all ill gotten “championships” were rescinded and awarded to the deserving teams.
