People getting rocked on punt returns was my assumption.
Yeah. But they didn't actually give a reason did they?

I like my idea to punch up kickoffs and punt returns. Each team fields only 8 players instead of 11.

Everytime something good happens on a punt or kickoff, before the play even ends, I'm always looking for the flag. And, of course, its always blocking behind the back. I hate it. And, most of the called penalties are dumb, like the guy put a finger on his back. It's the penalty I hate most!

The reason was the complaint that there seems to always be a penalty on the kickoff.

The problem is that gunners have gotten so good at getting downfield that a guy will risk a block in the back rather than have his returner get jacked up by a guy going full out.

Part of the reason this is an issue is that there is a combination of rule changes and improvement in special-teams player development and coaching which have put a significant strain on the old rules. The play is no longer the ignored play by most teams. At this point, many teams have realized that it is an opportunity to create disruption.

If the League continues "Tweaking" things, fans are going to stop coming to games. If this is an attempt to protect the players, it's only going to water down the game even more. Not to be an a$$, but these guys know the dangers of playing the game when they sign the contract. I get the whole safety thing, but if they continue changing how the game is played, it will be nothing more than soccer with pads (no offense to those who love soccer.) I've said it before, I honestly think they need to look at weight limits for all positions. The game has morphed into much bigger and faster athletes. Limit the size and I willing to bet injuries drop. I'm not saying a majority of injuries will go away, but I think it would lower them overall. Just my 2 cents.

I thought to many penalties too. So many that are so obvious. Rams get more than their fair share on both KO and punts. I don't know what the do to stop the penalties.

Geez guys calm down. One of the reasons they cite for looking into this is that there are too many penalties - probably one on every two-three punts, which is insane. If there are that many penalties on punts, something should be done.

The easiest thing IMO is to de-emphasize block in the back penalties. I feel like some are obvious, but quite a few seem like the blocker places his hands on a guys back and he falls down, possibly flopping to get a call.

I honestly dont get why we see so many block in the back penalties. How is it so hard to not do it ? I must be missing something but it seems so easily avoidable to me and those calls are always so blatant, i dont get it.

I've seen some dudes intentionally turn their back to a blocker who's trying to block from the side.

Nah, they can tweak rules all they want, and they have been doing that for decades.

What's keeping people away is the pricetag of an NFL game, too many commercial breaks, and too many issues with bad/non calls by the refs.

That's not me guessing, that's from a major in depth article done by a quality news outlet.

That's what is currently keeping fans away.

Just make it a no call on punts would be a good idea, I think you are on to something here.

I agree but it happens enough that maybe they should just ignore it on punts.

Do people get injured on punts a lot???
No but thanks to the comments on crowdsource, it had come to the league’s attention that a lot of players feelings have been hurt.

That matters a lot now I guess....

NFL be like: WE NEED MORE TOUCHDOWNS!!!!
