Do McSnead and Co. get nervous about extending guys early or attempt to secure players before they hit FA?

Kupp, JJ, Everett and others are in their FA year (I am leaving Ramsey out as he is a must-sign).

We could let these players play out their final contract year and decide whether to franchise them after the season OR we could find a middle ground where we meet their needs in terms of long-term security while betting on what we believe they will become.

These are the actual questions our front office are faced with every year. Recently, they have been scrutinized for being too aggressive; rightfully so with Ogletree and Austin. I would argue against many of the others due to injury.

How would you feel about extensions "a year early" for these guys?

I am still a wait and see guy on Everett.. His production hasn't said "We must lock him up yet". If we are being honest and not a homer, I think we can agree, this season is a make or break. He's been a disappointment in the grand scheme of things IMHO

Kupp & Ramsey are core long term players, they are MUSTS

JJ3 I like a lot and want him back, but Snead and our scouts do an amazing job finding S's and their hit rate is high. So if we need to find money because someone else became a all pro out of the blue, this would fall under the tough decisions and walk from JJ3.

Stanley might want a differ style S, or simply doesn't value that position etc.

Yes, I see a new approach. Unfortunately their intentions were good but it backfired. Injuries are out of their control
but it bit them this time.
I see less deals while players are still under contract and much better use of the franchise tag etc....

Unless we are running the Pats 2011 offense, I don't see enough production to warrant a contract that Everett is going to want in his 2nd contract. I see us beefing up their positions before putting more cash in a 2nd tight end.

Sign Kupp and Ramsey and see how Reynolds, Everette and Johnson play out. Of those three JJ is the only one I see here after 2020 unless they dont draw much attention in FA and sign back cheaper or we tag them but it's likely that they're all three gone.

Both have skills and athleticism and have been able to take their time growing.

Makes a lot of sense to use Everett more if they want to have a more physical element at TE/WR.

I think it could go either way with Everett this year but I also think that it’s entirely up to him and the talent is there.

If Everett has a Boom year then I think the Rams find a way to extend him. But I also think that anything less than a really big year leaves Everett as one of the odd man out casualties.

Rams have 3 Pro Bowl worthy players in Ramsey, Kupp, and JJ that have already earned their extensions. I wish Everett luck, but I think it’s an uphill battle for him at this point.

Also IMO, Tyler Higbee is more of a complete TE being an excellent blocker and showcased his receiver skills closing out the season in 2019. Everett can offer more in the Jet Sweep option too, being a former RB, but to this point, we shall see if he can rise to the occasion and hopefully make it difficult for the Rams to let him walk.

BTW, funny how some of the more critical voices from the talking head class about those deals, were also the ones screaming "Pay the man" when Gurley was coming off a Offensive Player of the Year award.

The departure of Cooks may afford Everett more pass catching opportunities. I mean, it’s possible that he could become a nightmare in his own right for opposing D’s. Think about it.

In most cases, you have to extend a guy you want to keep before or just as his last season starts. If you don't then its a franchise tag or they become free agents. They should think hard about extending players two years early as they did with TG. We don't get information on what they are thinking about extensions.

Everett-He hasn't done enough to get a long term deal from the Rams. I think other teams would be very interested in him next year as a free agent.

Reynolds-Same as Everett although he may not have as much interest as Everett.

JJ-Boy that's a tough one. I don't know what the Rams are thinking. If the Rams draft a safety early that could be a sign that they would not resign him. Trying to figure out if the Rams have the future cap space to resign him is next to impossible. The Rams could wait and try to match a deal next year but, will cost more.

Kupp-Rams have to figure out how to get him resigned ASAP. I don't think he would hold out this year. He will cost a lot of money.

The Rams aren't going to shy away from extending players in the final year of their contract. Some they will extend and others they won't. Players can extend for less than they will get as free agents a year later. Each situation is different.

Oh, I fully sgree, I just think McVay truly likes his 11 formation more than anything else, like late last season he basically had to be forced to go away from it. That will not be a good opportunity for Everett if it goes that way.

This a stale take on Everett IMO. He's made so many plays for us and rarely drops the ball on (had the one really bad one against Seattle last year) - he's athletic and his blocking, while not great, has improved every year.

When we get him involved, good things happen - but he's been the 4th-6th option in this offense since his rookie year, and most players would be in his situation.

Now, there's an argument there to not re-sign him (depending on what he's looking for) - but I think we will see him get more involved and possibly re-signed before the season.

I think so. It feels like more TE usage in the passing game in 2020... and Everett will benefit from that.

Everett’s hands are strong and... as a runner... there is violence to this man in YAC. I think he could explode in 2020.
