Who would he be displacing? What's the roster need we would be filling?
Who are our back up edges? If we do some 4-3, who is the back up DE? Sure, if Donald comes back, no need. And I have concerns over Young's knee.

I thought Shula said they would work Garrett into the defensive principles they already run. You heard we're doing some 4-3?

If they plug Garrett in to where Verse was, nothing else changes except they probably don't have Garrett drop back any. Stewart and Johnson are the backup edges now. I'm not seeing them changing that just because of this trade.

No, he also said, and emphasized they will also add things that fit him. In other words don't force him into a system that doesn't maximize his skill set.

Now, I did forget about Johnson, so that makes sense and makes me feel better about the set up. He played well when given a chance.

Yes there will be some changes in alignment but probably only occasionally - I think the above just means when he lines up at OLB he'll have his hand in the ground a bunch.

Having read all that, what is Garrett giving up for going from a shit organization with no chance to win a Superbowl in the near future to the Super Bowl favorite in 2026 and possibly 2027?
You will also see him getting many more national endorsements and a lot of local endorsements in the LA market that pay a heck of a lot nore than the Cleveland market did.

BTW, Espenesa just signed with Philly today, so a mute point now.

Another thought crossed my mind. A number of guys are in the last year of their contract. Garrett is not one of them. Does this change the dynamic there? Is Young a priority? Or will they be content with an all pro on one side and a younger guy with promise on the other side? I think Kobie Turner should be a higher priority. You need that presence in the middle.

I think they're both priorities, so long as they're not asking for the moon. Josiah Stewart is waiting in the wings at OLB but I don't think we have a replacement for Kobie. Young had 12 sacks last year, bad knee and all. If we're being sensible, we'd like Garrett to get the overwhelming majority of sacks so Young doesn't have a 16 sack season and asks for lotsa money. If he leaves, more than likely it'll be for nice jack and we'll get a 3rd round comp pick.

CBS article on breakout players

EDGE Byron Young

It can be difficult to find an under-the-radar star on a team with so many very much on-the-radar stars, but Byron Young fits the bill here. He has already played very well -- PFF had him as the No. 10 EDGE in the NFL last year -- and now he'll get a ton of one-on-one opportunities with Myles Garrett on the opposite side. Last year, Young notched 12 sacks and made his first Pro Bowl, but he probably wouldn't come to mind if you had to list the Rams' top stars. Still, he appears to be on his way to becoming one. His 16.8% pressure rate last year was 11th in the league.

Not to dismiss BY’s talents because 12 sacks is still pretty damn good and that pressure rate is nothing to sneeze at. But I have to wonder how many times he was NOT one on one. I guess we should see a pretty big jump this year if so.

Yeah going off memory it seemed like Young had a lot of single draws with RTs. Teams probably slid to Verse more often than not. But with Garrett over there you know where the protections are going for the most part. So maybe that gives Young a boost.

We also have Stewart going into year two and he's the kind of high effort rusher who might take advantage of that as well. So I figure Young will be allowed to leave in FA. Love his contain ability but rushing the QB is what makes the money.
